Description
I took this photo of a Snapping Turtle (Chelydra Serpentina) at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. It was pretty good sized and the king of the pond. When I was a little boy, my grandfather called my cousin and I over to his car, popped the trunk, which contained a huge snapping turtle (at least huge to a little boy). I asked Grandpa what he was going to do with it and he said "cook it and eat it." I was glad we weren't eating there that evening! Later my Dad told me that growing up they had turtle every time Grandpa could catch one. Happily that was one tradition that wasn't passed down.Related content

Awesome turtle! !!!
I'm pretty sure it's illegal now days to eat turtle ( "they are one of the most imperiled groups of animals on the planet" )

I was just reading up on it too, and you are correct; apparently some do eat them and they are used for other commercial purposes too. I'm with you though, I'd never take one or eat one either. So sad. Learning of this does surprise me, though,.. I really thought it would be illegal. I guess it must just be so for sea turtles.. I wish it were so for all of them.

I never had turtle but have heard of turtle soup. I'm not a big soup fan anyways so I don't think I'll be trying it anytime soon
Turtles in general seem throw backs to the dinosaur age and snappers really seem so with those dragon tails/
Nice moment capture Steve

Perfectly understandable. It was logical back in those times to own a gun to put food on the table. Just imagine what would be left in the wild today if they had AK47 back then
