Description
Watercolor! It's about 7x7 inches.I drew the horse freehand, messed up the back leg. Didn't notice until I was painting, and I managed to turn the spot where it used to be into a nice dust cloud
I also refrained from adding ink - a real challenge for me.

Thanks! I was really pleased with the way the colors on the horse came out. Like it had a sheen! Pure luck, of course. I had no idea what I was doing

Ooooh, I really love this! It gives a dynamic sense of movement, and I really like the "happy accidents". That's exactly why I prefer watercolours to any other medium.

Thank you Leochi! The accidents kind of scare me with watercolor. Not so much with acrylic because you can just paint over it. This one worked out though! I'm trying to get better at contrast, I was happy at how the horse turned out I feel like my blacks always look dirty, and I even mix my own, so I'm either just overly critical or not doing it right! At any rate, contrast is a struggle because of it and I use ink as a fall-back.

The more you work with watercolours, the more those happy accidents will delight you without the scary factor. And you know, you can easily dab mistakes away as long as the colour is wet. (Of course staining pigments make that technique a bit harder.)
Don't be too hard on yourself and there is no right or wrong. Just experiment and have fun, you will realise what makes you happy and what techniques are not your cup of tea. Painting with watercolours is a lifelong process, I guess, and one only learns by doing.
To me the best blacks are those mixed with ultramarine and any kind of brown. I also sometimes just use plain watercolour black if necessary. (The Worst Witch was painted with the use of lots of black from the pan, just to make a point, lol.) Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot use black with watercolours. *grins* But I must admit that I prefer mixing my blacks.
Layering is key to achieve good contrasts. It took me quite a while to realise that my watercolors definitely became better and more luminous the more I used layering as a means of deepening the colours.
