Description A tutorial I've wanted to do for a while because every once in a while I will get the questions "What is a brush?" or "How do I load and use them?". Here is hopefully a simple answer to that question!

Note, the download to desktop button is now just "download" with V5 and it is located to the left of the deviation.

The zip file is separate from photoshop, a program like Winzip that allows you to zip (compress) the file(s). XP has this feature built in, if you right click it will give you an option to created a compressed(zipped) file. It's great if you have more than one file you want to upload in the same submission because it will put it all into this "folder" of sorts and allow you to submit it at the smallest possible size as well. Google Winzip if you need more info, I'm sure they have some on the more specific ins and outs.

Hope that helps .

I do have XP but it's still not letting me save as a bmp file, I understand how to upload the brushes in photoshop but it's not seeming to work out

Save what as a bmp file? The tutorial? Because a bmp file has nothing to do with brushes, you lost me there.

ClimbingAddict In reply to Scully7491 [2006-06-08 20:21:11 +0000 UTC]

well when I go to load the brushes it only lets me see bmp files, not all files or anything else... whoa I'm lost...

Scully7491 In reply to ClimbingAddict [2006-06-09 02:24:29 +0000 UTC]

That's odd. Are you clicking the download to desktop button to get the .abr file? Because there shouldn't be bmp files in there anywhere unless you're right clicking and saving the preview image.

yeah, I clicked the 'download to desktop' and then it asks me where I want to save it but it doesn't change from a zip file, even though I do have windows XP, I'm sorry to be a bother about this...

No problem I don't mind. You might try downloading WinZip to unzip the files. Ususally in XP a double click will unzip the files but for whatever reason you might be having a problem with that.

ClimbingAddict In reply to Scully7491 [2006-06-09 11:25:34 +0000 UTC]

double clicking on what?

Scully7491 In reply to ClimbingAddict [2006-06-10 05:06:02 +0000 UTC]

The .zip file. That should start the process in XP with or without Winzip asking where you want to extract the file to.

okay i did it but it's not working!!! You're talking about Adobe photshop 7 right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scully7491 In reply to faeriegurl [2005-11-30 05:20:42 +0000 UTC]

That's what the tutorial was made in yes; but it should be applicable for each version.

What exactly is going wrong?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faeriegurl In reply to Scully7491 [2005-11-30 05:51:56 +0000 UTC]

well i pressed the "download to desktop" button, saved it as an ".abr" file in the "adobe photshop only, brushes, presets" folder in my program files on C: Drive. I go to Adobe photsop and go to use the brushes.

The brush files are in the menu, but when i click on them it says "replace current brushes with blah.. etc." I click okay and then it comes up "could not load the brushes because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." It is adobe 7.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scully7491 In reply to faeriegurl [2005-11-30 05:57:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmm that is odd indeed. They are my brushes you're talking about yes? Because mine are all compatible with PS7 and tested as such.

There could also be an error in the downloaded file as .zip files often are corrupted when downloading.

Have you tried loading them outside of the presets folder manually? Leaving the .abr file on your desktop and replacing brushes? Maybe that will change things. Other than that it might be a program error of some sort because usually that message only comes up when you're trying to use a higher version brush in a lower version :S. It's hard to tell without being right there. There are other tutorials available on google; perhaps I wasn't clear on something and that is screwing it up, I can't be sure.

faeriegurl In reply to Scully7491 [2005-11-30 06:01:05 +0000 UTC]

hang on, it could be because I'm using the "trial version" but the trial version is usually as good or better because they want you to get the most out of it, so you'll buy it, because it's so good....
I was really looking forward to using them! I'll try what you suggested though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scully7491 In reply to faeriegurl [2005-11-30 06:03:32 +0000 UTC]

That might be it; I've never tried the trial version but it may not be fully functional or have an error in itself.

Sorry for the troubles!

hey, do you think you could make some brushes that don't need to be unzipped? i don't have a program for unzipping on my computer (and honestly, i don't think my computer could handle any more programs).. i love your brushes but right now i can't use any of them. GAH! so frustrating >.<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scully7491 In reply to vampurity-stock [2005-08-31 04:50:31 +0000 UTC]

If you have XP you already have an unzipping program (just double click the file and it should ask you what you want to do)...and if not Winzip [link] is a free and fairly small program to install (there are others if it is too big a google search will probably find results). I just looked at it takes 4.95 MB of space. Honestly some of the brush files probably take up as much or more space on your hard drive as the winzip program will once you accumulate some lol.

I've had many problems uploading non zipped brush files to Deviant Art, plus since there are sometimes several files I upload (the brush set and a txt file with rules) I have to keep them together.

I have 56k at the moment or I'd upload them to my personal website for you in abr format but it takes too much time that I don't have :S.

Sorry I can't do more!

It should have downloaded to your desktop as the button says ...look on your screen and the zip file should be there.

It's not 8(
Do you think a setting I have could be preventing it from downloading it or something?
- also, is the photoshop program suposta start loading after the brush is done downloading?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Scully7491 In reply to Illiterate-Cell [2005-07-04 05:27:56 +0000 UTC]

Hmm you could always try right click and save target (or link) as. When I click download to desktop in firefox at least it still gives me the option as where to save it. I don't think a setting would prohibit this either. But it does allow for right clicking and saving which should give you flexibility where to save it. Other than that I have no idea and you might want to take it up with the helpdesk if you feel it is a problem with DA.

No photoshop won't open when it's done downloading. My brushes at least are zipped so you have to unzip them and load them into the right folder or load them manually in photoshop (as is explained in the tutorial you are commenting on).

I notice you're commenting on the tutorial though, are you having truoble with it or a brush set?...the tutorial might download differently depending on your browser. When you click download it may open as a JPG picture in your window but it could take a while to load instead of downloading it.

I haven't looked at the tutorial yet but there is no doubt in my mind that it will be useful. There are so many people that ask this question. I Hope that they quickly realize that the same principles that apply to brushes can be used for loading and using most of the Photoshop presets.

Any way thank you for sharing in advance and please have a great day,

Barry
