We'll either potentially meet your expectations, or greatly disappoint you. Let's watch and see!

You know, I really like your rendition of Gaz much more than the original. She's more personable.

This is Gaz with friends, as well as more jaded and two years older. I suppose she's had the most change, but I doubt she'd be too different from the show with most anyone else. Glad to know that you like our depiction of her!

Gladder still to see no one's yet declared HERESY!! on our depiction of the characters, yet.

yet, if you pick up enough attention there - I'm sure - will be plenty of haters but in any case don't like them mess with you. No matter what you do there's bound to be some one, somewhere, who doesn't like you for whatever forsaking reason.

Finally, a good out-of-style Zim interpretation.
I find he usually looks like a gothic kid, tubby wubby cutie pie, or experienced army commander.

All I'm going to say is thank you.

Can't see him as any other way than a sort of idiot with a sickening level of narcissism, who somehow manages to also be really good at making things (GIR's enhanced guidance chip, localized time stasis fields, Minimoose... sort of, etc.) and have some wonderful diction from time to time (like this line , one of my absolute favourites) Despite his supposed Elite training, you can see his failure and impressive incompetence as a soldier in Hobo 13, not to mention that the entirety of the show features him being foiled by a little boy nigh constantly.

He can still be cute, though. But just on very few, isolated moments.

I token his ability to make interesting things to his heritage on Irk, where technology is abounding and common knowledge ("...I played with much more dangerous things as toys as a child..."), and his PAK. Also the fact he was an exchange student on Vort--a scientist nonetheless. This goes to show he either showed promise in the field, or the Brains were sick of him and stuck him as far away as possible. I tend to go for the former. Even if he isn't a great listener, when it comes to destructive tactics he's not wary of building a complex machine or genetic experiment to get the job done.

He (if not clumsily) successfully drove off the Planet Jackers and Tak, and devised a way to escape from Sizz-Lor... I tend to think that when special occasion like that arises, he'll stand up and overcome it. He seems to be toying with Dib; don't get me wrong, ZaDr and even ZaDf are revolting in my mind, however Zim and Dib play a dangerous game of Cat and Mouse. He'll push him around, use him, and overall be stupid about it...then when he FINALLY decides to ACTUALLY take over Earth, he'll just crush the house with a giant crushy thingy or poison his food.

Also, the link you gave me directed me to the full episode. Was that intentional, or did you have a specific scene or line in mind?

The link should have sent you to a specific time, where Zim starts off saying "Beautiful...", followed by his spiel about his meat-themed vengeance.

I think of their relationship as something vital to the both of them. Taking into consideration the events of Mopiness of Doom, they have a need to validate themselves, particularly towards each other. Zim wants to be a competent evil conqueror, and Dib wants to prove he's an authentic hero and genius. They're reviled in their own societies, but together their motives both clash and gel with one another. A game of cat and mouse is in play, but the cat is declawed. Do I believe Zim could crush Dib with his mighty, advanced technology? Oh, yes. But he refuses to. He has the power, but needs to prove that, at a somewhat even level, Zim would be declared victor over his enemy, his singular match. It's all a game, and both of them play into it.

Even with all that, it doesn't mean they're not trying to obliterate one another, and I can see them trying to trump one another until either of them expire.

Really, I'm kind of into the idea of ZaDF. Jhonen Vasquez is into ZaDF, somewhat (notably seen in the way he ended the IZ comic he drew for Nick Mag). It's just that, once they are truly friends, the conflict is over and there's nothing more to tell in their story. At least not the one proposed by the show. But I can see it happen, should either of them essentially defeat their respective adversary... and not destroy them in the process.

On the other hand, ZaDR is hilarious.

Maybe not declawed...sheathed might be a better term (I read too much Warriors...).
You basically rephrased my previous comment, so I'll leave it at that.

Scypod In reply to Rogue284 [2013-02-22 02:32:42 +0000 UTC]

It was something of a loss that we had to do. Originally, one of the insults Zim has is massive head of stink, but that one, and all others, were hidden behind their heads because we wanted people to see them and their expressions more than our mildly inventive insults.

Rogue284 In reply to Scypod [2013-02-22 08:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah fair enough. Don't forget to put it in later though since it's an important part of the original show as far as Dib is concerned.

LOving this comic so far. In terms of art style I like you the eyes are done and the soft lines the lighting, and the way you put that "shine" in the eyes. Also thank you for not ruining Zim's character design, makes it much more enjoyable.

We won't be able to resist making fun of Dib's enormous cranium! Actually, if you compare Dib's head size in the comic right now with everyone else, it's actually slightly larger. Go on, do it in Paint or something!

We're honestly trying to keep everyone as in character as bloody possible, especially considering the turns and changes the story will take on further ahead. We're also taking into consideration that, in the comic, it's been two years since the show's canon started. Everyone's behaviour can't stay entirely inert (except, I'd say, for Zim's) so, exempli gratia, Dib's cooled off on his obsession with Zim, Gaz has toned down her frightening animosity towards the world, but only a slight bit. Enough that it certainly makes a visible change in how characters interact with each other (Gaz stepping in to help Dib keep Abi in the house, or Dib not immediately ranting about Zim all the time to whoever listens).

I'm glad these changes don't seem to have affected anyone's viewing of the comic, though! I suppose we'll know if we're doing the right thing within the next few pages.
