I almost wasn't going to do Lovecraft's Dagon, since I feared it might come out like just any generic fish-man, but then I remembered his monolith, and that made the whole thing way more fun.
If you've never read "Dagon," the short, public domain story is online here:

If you mean carved on the stone, it's Opabinia, a real prehistoric invertebrate
When the story mentions animal carvings that the narrator can't identify, I always pictured a mix of undiscovered species and prehistoric species the Deep Ones may remember, or still encounter down in their domain.

Did you know this fish god was inspired by an agricultural god that pre-judaism hebrews worshipped? Dagon probably runs his own farm in his free time

According to some the crown worn by the god Dagon inspired the pope hat.

You drew the Lovecraft monster from the very first HPL story I ever read. And you made it look awesome. And you put Opabinia on the monolith.
Seriously, can you, like, marry me?

His gigantic fisheyes make me go "AWWW".
Not sure if you're doing in general mythological creatures, but I'd love to see you do a Kappa. Because they're just awesome. Or a Futakuchi-onna. :3

This story got me more than any of the others in that "TOO HORRIBLE TO COMPREHEND" sense. My friend went on and on about how well it built up to the ending, so then I was hugely disappointed when I read it. "It was... a giant fish-man. A GIANT FISH-MAN MY LIFE IS MEANINGLESSNESS AND HORROR OOOHHHH NOOOOOO"
You could blow that guy's mind if you handed him a decent biology textbook, I tell ya.

Poor Lovecraft was schizo like that. Reading "At the Mountains of Madness" was particularly crazy in that he was trying his damnedest to sympathize with the Old Ones, but just couldn't restrain himself from going on about HORROR and MADNESS. But hell, the man couldn't keep from frothing about Jews in front of his Jewish wife, so...

It went WAY beyond "different times" for Lovecraft - other cultures absolutely TERRIFIED him.
...Also, wait, what? XD You pretty much have to be a complete scumbug to bash someone to their face.

It's actually like that everywhere, but of course we hear about our own country the most. Japan is highly xenophobic for instance, but they tend to be quiet about it.
Lovecraft was horrified by everything he used as themes in his works. Old books, great expanses of time, unusual geometry...everything but cats.
