The radially symmetrical "elder things" or "great old ones" arrived on the planet before the evolution of complex life, and built a vast empire eventually brought down by their own horrifying beasts of burden, the Shoggoths.

Instead of commenting on all your Lovecraft drawings, I'll just say that they are ALL fantastic and will be appearing in my gallery.

The rainbow cilia really top this design. Personally, I imagined them with pen-shaped heads, but very angelic.

lol. I had a feeling that was the case.
I like the rainbow colors you put on his head. They almost look like party streamers.

no one ever seems to draw the wings and tendrils all around in each crevice.
you planning on doing more mythos? possibly the less known and obscure ones? or maybe your interpretation on the great brain taking space fungi?

The radial symmetry was too hard to illustrate with the cartoony 2-d perspective
I was planning a mi-go, byakhee, shoggoth, gug and yithian for sure.
Vague possibilities would be yog-sothoth, the colour out of space, flying polyp, dimensional shambler, moonbeast and nightgaunt.

oh yes, you should!
i had a thin bestiary of very well painted monsters from his stories well before i even knew a thing of who or what lovecraft was. so some of these monsters have nostalgia attached to them for me. it was the book with the legged, and red robed snake creature on the cover.

not sure if I've seen that one! It wasn't Petersen's Field Guide to the Cthulhu Monsters?

not sure. i periodically lose that book for years at a time. if their is a red robed snake man on the front with like books and potion bottles, it's more then likely it.

I thought they were just the "old ones", and the "great old ones" were Cthulhu and the like.

LOVE the porifera-esq wing structures.
Most people forget the colorful little tendrils at the top.
Very unique design.

It's very close to the design by Wayne Barlowe really. A little more than I even intended :/

I've read that book so many times (ah, childhood memories) that I could probably pick this out as being based on his Old One design out of a field full of bizarre monstrosities. In fact, I did! I was looking through your dA gallery! Baboom!
Regardless how much this may have turned out like Barlowe's design despite your intent, it's still a lovely piece, and a perfectly fitting, downright adorable "chibification" of a great design that still feels unique to you.

aw, thanks! It's hard to stray from a design you think of as the "correct" one, since Barlowe's was actually my introduction to them when I was a kid!

I was just about to ask if you'd read "Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestials" cause this looks like a chibi version of his drawing...
Still great however!
