The only real vampire that sparkles!
VAMPYROTEUTHIS VIDEO: [link]
VAMPYROTEUTHIS FACTS:
-Belong to a unique group of the Cephalopoda, neither truly squids nor octopuses.
-Juveniles are four-finned.
-Possess eight arms in a fleshy web, lined with rubbery needle-like sensory cirri.
-In addition to the eight arms are a pair of pale sensory filaments below the eyes, which can unravel for several yards!
-Their bodies are completely dotted with tiny photophores. Stronger lights are on the tentacle tips and at the top of the head.
-The pair of head-lights are also light *sensitive,* making them analogous to an extra pair of primitive eyes.
-The animal has control over its lights as precise as an octopus has over its color. In the darkness of the deep sea, it can use its lights in MANY different ways to confuse both its predators and prey.
-Fossil evidence shows that this group was once far larger in terms of both species and physical size, and were not always restricted to the deep abyss.
-They were once believed to be sluggish creatures, using their lights to lure prey like an anglerfish. We now know they are capable of impressive speed bursts and chase down their prey.

Yay, one of my all-time favourite creatures! The vampyroteuthis has to be the most generally beautiful and elegant animal I know of on this planet!

Man, these guys really get a bad rap in the naming department. We should save the whole "Vampire Squid from Hell" for a cephalopod that really deserves it. Maybe if they ever discover a species that eats babies...

It looks like it has a curly moustache.
(It can't be the only sparkling vampire, what if you dipped a vampire bat in glitter?)

Amen to that! They are more educational than a textbook, and way more entertaining to look at again and again than all the Discovery Channel reruns.
