Description
This is my Master Study participation in the 'Master Study to Original - January Challenge' of MasterStudiesAndMore , co-hosted by Inspiring-Creation and ThatArtGrind ".The theme is Animals and I chose a photograph of a wolf to illustrate. Not sure how this image is going to look because on one screen it looks 'normal' and on another it looks pretty dark. It has been a long time since I did a very detailed image. I really like doing detailed images so this was pretty fun to do. The fur was challenging but in the end it felt very much like doing a stipple illustration except that the dots are slightly elongated to create the fur look. I was also planning on doing it in color but to eliminate the stress and just draw I did this in greyscale. I do plan on seeing whether I can add color to this ---> I have seen some interesting videos so I will see how that goes. If not then this will just stay as grey scale.
It is not yet finished. I thought that I would leave this to show my progress within the challenge and like ro5ert , I will be finishing this in conjunction with the second part of the challenge which is the original. I do realise that I need to lighten it more as I go along...I have a tendency to make my images too dark for some reason and I am lacking in adding the right amount of light. I do love the fact that I was able to use a textured brush ---> it is a small thing but I am trying to learn how to use textured brushes.
There were so many beautiful images of wolves but I settled on this because I wanted to try my hand at fur and I wanted to also find an image of a wolf that had some muscle tone so I could draw that as well. I plan on doing a werewolf for my original so I wanted to learn how to do the necessary elements.
Here is the original image: www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h… (the image isolated)
This is the site that I got it from: wallpaperaccess.com/wolf-4k (unfortunately I have no idea who created this image and this site does not do much to help me figure out who that may be. I am hoping that maybe I just don't know where to look)
Notable mention is this: www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h… (this wolf looks so badass. I was considering drawing it but I did not know how to illustrate the white fur. But, like, this wolf has a scar over it's eye!!! It looks like it probably wears a medallion of Geralt of Rivia around it's neck!!!)

Yes! but this is only the rough illustration. The wolf was finalized in the 2 other illustrations on my page (a color version and a black and white version)

Thank you!!!! Ya, I am more drawn to do detailed work than anything else (no pun intended). This is where I am more comfortable. My goal is to take this skill over to my original work.

Thank you!!! It is basically me making quick scratches to get small marks that, all together create the illusion of fur. It does take time though. Depending on which you have more of - shadows or light - you would make the base color the dominant color. So if it was mostly shadow and some light them I would add a base color of shadow and do tick marks of light and medium. It is easier than making ticks for every light, medium and dark thing you see.

Thank you Sekemolados ...I am actually very intimidated of color right now but I do want to try it. I did this in greyscale because I just wanted to enjoy the feel of illustrating instead of worrying whether my colors were right or not. I should have also mentioned that I made the original image greyscale first before I started to illustrate.
I think I may have lightened the eyes a bit. When I made the image greyscale, the original eyes were not popping enough for me so I pushed the values slightly so that they are more noticeable. I am pretty happy with the results. I do feel that compared to the original, my eyes lack a bit of the strength the original has. My eyes seem almost timid whereas the original eyes seem a bit more stern (I think that has to do with the brow that I drew)
Thank you for your comment. I am very excited to try and see what my original is going to look like. I am aiming to do it in color....hopefully

I have read your comments about the wolf's eyes with interest. I am working on a realistic 3D model of a coyote using software. Last night I was working on the eyes, so when I read this comment today it was of particular interest for me. In my study of modeling a coyote from hundreds of photographs rather than from a live model, I too was perplexed about how much of the eyes I wanted to pop out and exactly where to place them.
From a character standpoint I think a viewing audience looks at the eyes the most. I'm not sure about wolves, but I have noticed that in coyote photographs the upper eyelid is horizontal above the eyeball, and I have decided to model it this way as I see it realistically, even though that may well change the expression. I'm not sure I had a coyote expression in mind to begin with, but? It's very hard to get an expression when you're not working with any fur- that will come later after modeling.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with this wolf in color.

Hey Hairyskeleton...cool name, lol. I consider myself a competitive person and when I see an artist do something, I generally want to try it out myself to see if I can achieve the same results. I mention that because in the back of my mind, one of the 'animal artists' that I have come across here on deviantart is: BeckyKidus . She draws the most amazing animal illustrations that I have ever seen. I especially love how she captures the eyes. It is this reason that I wanted to have my animals eyes pop out as well in my image. If you are having some trouble with understanding eyes then you should definitely check her out or even this The (I hope) complete guide on ANIMAL EYES . This could help as well: Felines vs Canines tutorial - Faces
I have not had much experience with drawing animals so this was an interesting exercise for me.
Thank you for your comment.

Dude! That's some serious furr skills pushups right here! Your rendering is excellent. I got curious about your somewhat worried wolf and did some human facial expressions digging. There the triangle shaped eyebrows/ eyelids (higher towards the center of the face), deeper wrinkle-> contracted muscles (stronger on eye on the left) results on something like . It might be just a bit of too much contrast on a line, an eyelid a bit too upwards, but we humans are just so good at picking up these details... Funny that a full out roar/ rage expression is much easier to accomplish then these more subtle variations.
Great Study! Can we see some werewolf preview?

Thank you!!! that is what is wrong with it. I was staring at my illustration while reading that. My illustration might be too raised (or slightly raised at the eyebrow looking thing).
Uhm....about the werewolf....uhm....so like I did not start it yet but I will...at some point...ha..haha (laughs nervously because he does not know if he will be able to actually pull it off). I need to first finish watching some videos on face anatomy and hands. The two things I have neglected to finish learning are going to come in handy for the original.
How far are you with your original? You care to give a clue as to what you are about to show us?

So,... uh, my original is right now a bunch of not so friendly gorilla photos. The plan is to get some action of those with a motion background effect that I saw on my study (one of the bits that's still missing on my copy, oh well). So I'm afraid I'm not very far either (pic of your wolf here) ; )

Thank you so much!!! The grey background was actually a place holder until I drew the correct scene. I wanted to color the wolf in and I may still do that. I will see how successful that is.
