They were not always "Sentinels". And they were not always made of clay.

Back in the day, when I graduated high school, I played around with different stories in my head to put to paper. One idea was something about awakening the Titans in the four corners of the Earth and having a young kid and a detective or government agent deal with this problem, and a lot of sound and fury. Designing creatures is the easy part, but the hard part of coming up with an original story is working out the details.
At least for me. Most of the time, I'm coming up with ideas that I want to add into my comics/stories. It isn't something I can turn off ever, even when I am out and about with my family doing things for three or four hours, like going to the aquarium to touch the stingrays.
For this particular comic, I came up with a new storyline. There would be a rebel prince, son of Auoberon the King of Elfland (I love William Shakespeare), and there would be a revolt in the fairy world - which for eons had been subservient to the human world. The main character (Hikaru) would do battle with dangerous Unseelie fae straight from the story I concocted and wrote, there would be goblins and dragons...but still, no titans or sentinels sketched out yet.
As I work on other stories, like Nordic, I write Tír na nÓg: Legend, multitasking for months as I always do. All the while, I am listening and re-listening to various audiobooks. Listening to Robert E. Howard, Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, Bettelheim, Tatar, Jung, Andersen, and Grimm, et al. What else can be said? I'm a fan of the classics.
Lately, I thought about a small allegory about Hikaru's purpose on this earth. Kinda like Superman having to choose between joining his fellow Kryptonians (which involves joining Zod's cause) or becoming a regular Joe.
Hikaru's storyline is about choices of a different kind. Which is more powerful, the capacity to destroy or the capacity to embrace? And what better to embody a lack of choice than a group of titans, primordial abominations created and imbued with elemental energies, geared to kill anything and everything in their path? Though I also came up with an idea for a group of golems the Tuatha Dé Danann built to guard one of their hidden cities, one that has long since been abandoned. These creatures would be unique. Their creators took something that was organic, like clay, and imbued them with steam and diesel to make them work like machines. Like the titans, they can't choose between good and evil, no free will. I thought of these guards, but had no name for them - the Mechanical Guardians? The Warriors of Armageddon? Then I remembered a word I learned from one of the X-Men comics, and... voilà!

As the process went on, I filled this story with more and more elements, such as a Faerie Bazaar (cue the theme from the Mos Eisley Cantina band in Star Wars).
As days turned into weeks, I'd argue with myself about adding in fantastical elements, such as self-driving cars, garbage cans/high-tech incinerators, colossi, clay golems, and a seemingly jarring musical duet between Ernst and Hikaru. There would even be a scene with a monstrous entity destroying one of Seattle's streets. A callous colossus (a reference to both Godzilla and Shadow of the Colossus) - which is relevant to the prince's plea and Hikaru's rude awakening about human nature.
Needless to say, the scale of this comic series is huge - in fact, almost impossibly big. Some people may want it scaled down. Not me. Mayhem in Piccadilly Circus, Moscow, Japan, underwater adventures, mass destruction...I wanted it all! I was greedy! Though, like the moral in a fable, I had to realize that less was more. I had to cut it down the story to smaller and smaller versions of itself. No Tokyo, no Moscow, fewer crowd scenes, etc.
Aside from working on my own comics and farting around with online college, I have also been attending an animation program for autistic individuals, Exceptional Minds in Sherman Oaks, CA, deep in "the Valley" - that blessed "no man's land" that posh people avoid in L.A., and that I love passionately. My last class with them was online, I spent most of it animating, living off of coffee, Twinkies and cheap takeout food, and having a lot of passion for the images in my sketchbook.
As always, I color, texture, and shape-code my stories, I follow some rules and try to have fun. While at EM, I work as if at a summer camp for kids one is sure to like (way more engaging than the college I attend). I had many lunches and dinners with them, visited my local library, shot the breeze, listened to heavy metal, and stayed up late pursuing excellence.

With this superhero comic series, I am hoping the results of that passion and commitment will be seen. I tried to create a world that's different than what one normally expects when employing the words "fairy tale." I knew I needed to avoid the Anglo-Saxon/Celtic magical universe that is common in mainstream films and literature, because it would be impossible to surpass what's been established in scope and scale. So I used medieval engravings, Arabian tales, and the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, among other sources as a reference. That, along with care and attention to detail.
I am very proud of this series, I am proud of its scope, and its breadth and ambition, but I am also proud of its gentle soul and for being a series full of images that pop.
May this futuristic combination of the four elements live forever in your mind.
