His name is Brynden Rivers, and he's one of Aegon IV's bastards, who eventually became Hand of the King and later Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. When we meet him he is well over 120 years old and nearly completely merged with a group of weirwood trees that form a living throne of roots winding around and through his body. The trees have given him artificially long life. It is from him we begin to learn more about the Old Gods and the Children of the Forest.
