Zira had been trespassing into the Pridelands when she heard the cries. She was drawn to the sound by curiosity, where she stumbled upon the red cub. Her head jerked up, and she briefly caught a glimpse of a cream lioness making a run for it.

Zira’s lip curled to show teeth as the lioness disappeared, gazing down at the orphaned cub. “Tsk. Nala never did appreciate the way Scar looked at her, but to take her hate out on a poor cub…” Jealousy poisoned her words, staring at the red ball of fur. What should she do with it? It was clearly Nala’s, but it looked like it may be her beloved Scar’s, too. She could not stand here and debate, she did not have that kind of time.

Zira knelt down to pick the cub up by the back, but froze when she saw the blood. Her teeth clenched together, eyes closing in agony at flashbacks of her own trauma that landed the hole she has in her ear. She redirects her jaws and gently takes the cub’s scruff.

It did not take her long to return to the Outlands. Her eldest cub was immediately badgering her, walking alongside her. “Mother, what is that? Why do you have it?”

Zira answered plainly. “This is your new sister. We’ll call her Shetani.”

Nuka examines the cub carefully as his mother walks, then gasps. “Mother, she’s bleeding! You…didn’t do that to her, did you?”

Zira shot her son a toothy grin. “Of course I didn’t. I would never hurt a cub. Well, maybe Simba’s, but this isn’t Simba’s! This cub is from Scar, and we’ll make the most of this opportunity given to us. I’ll betroth her to Kovu, and Scar’s bloodline will prosper! With her as his Queen, Simba will have no choice but to forfeit the Pridelands.” Her nasty grin expands, eyes flaring with how she imagines the future to come.
