Description My parents drive a minivan to work everyday. It is a Chevrolet Astro, a rather strange minivan actually. It is like the Hummer of minivans (from a design perspective). It can tow, haul, and it is built to last. But the capabilities of any vehicle can be hampered by untrustworthy mechanics. The transmission started to leak oil, for the mechanics that rebuilt it did not know much about the vehicle. So the van was taken to a trustworthy mechanic with a rather high certification. He found even more problems. There was little oil in the engine, little oil left in the transmission, and all four shocks were gone. Need an oil change? Never go to Walmart. Want to rebuild your transmission? Think twice about that costly decision. Too concerned about saving money on everything, even the well-being of your car? Spend on some better things for your car (such as higher quality oils, better tires, and maybe even try another gas station) so that it can pay off in the long run.

What does all of this have to do with this drawing? Well, because of one less vehicle in the family, I have had to travel to work with my parents in the same car, which meant waking up four hours earlier and staying at work for the full twelve hours a day for nearly a whole week. It was not bad. I actually enjoyed spending more time with my parents. Of course, not all of those hours were spent working. So I brought along my drawing supplies. At the time I was busy working on a long running design project, but the project was too big to bring, and I wanted to work on some new unrelated drawings to warm up for the final portions of that design project.

Hot rods and muscle cars have a certain fun quality about them. Drawing them is far more interesting than drawing a modern day vehicle. In addition to that, I wanted to try drawing something without having to rely on references.

The end result is a vehicle that is purely from my memory based on real vehicles i have seen. It is loosely based off of a 1932 Ford sedan, but with some lavish fenders and an extension of the front frame. The tropical setting within the stripes was added to contrast the red color of the car.

Why "Five-O"? It may be a police term, but with that Hawaii-like setting, it sounded nice. Oh, and this car packs a bad-boy 5.0 V8 Mustang motor.

This drawing was done on bristol board (trimmed to size 9" x 6") with Prismacolor pencils. Only the vehicle was blended for a smooth finish. The background was left with the original texture for a gritty feel.

Thank you! It would be nice to see a real version. The hood would probably be the most extreme part of the car because it's so looong.

Nice, in some aspects its best you are with your parents an extra 4 hours, I take because of all of what happened made this drawing possible.

Thanks, it sure did. My parents learned a little more about the way I draw as well.
