I quite like this. There's a neat combination of simplicity and complexity implemented here plus the color coordination is stellar. The minifig capes as cuffs is pretty clever though I don't think it exactly works. They remind me more of wrist-launched drones. The black bones on the upper arms also stand out a bit that they break the flow of the 'jacket'. Not sure if that's fixable in any reasonable way though. Otherwise good work.

I've been staring at this rather intensely a good while now. I'm thinking I might make a 'study moc' based on these designs.

ClockworkTempest00 In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2017-10-03 23:15:57 +0000 UTC]

This thread actually made me wanna throw in my two cents.

1. In terms of the Pat's MOC here, which I feel like someone buried the lead on, is a good MOC. I will agree the design and build is super similar to a handful of his MOCs he's made in the past year. However, it fits the theme hes got going with these dudes, and when you put them together it's a very nice display. I think it's nothing groundbreaking, but I dig it, especially the colors.Β

Also coming from someone who makes 90% "doods," I like what I build. Don't like? Don't gotta follow. A moccist should only build for themselves or if they are rarely commissioned to do so.Β

2. I can't add much more to Dave's faults because there are others here who can more acutely point them out. My general opinion is "Dave is a fuck." I have had small issues with most vocal people in this overall community for years, whether it be irrational or not, I generally keep it to myself unless I am around good company. But realistically, it isn't my business, I have little to no context, or its generally a misunderstanding. Hence why I'm always willing to hear someone out or have a conversation with them UNLESS they have personally offended myself or my friends on a deep level. You know who you are. But, even then, those are my private issues that I will keep private.

The issue with Dave is twofold:
a. He makes a fraction if not a majority of his beef public for the whole world to see. On purpose, of course, nobody shitposts on accident.
b. There is a pattern in his behavior and attitude in his public persona. He's a blowhard online, and if this were someone else, I would give them another chance or hear them out if they've done something wrong to understand and get context. There are a handful of folks I had been sour about in the past, and after meeting them in person, I've walked away feeling pretty positive about those people after talking out what were my misunderstandings. I'm not going to make assumptions as to why Dave does what he does, I think its idiotic that the majority of us here are 3-8 years younger than him and we have our public discourse put more together. IDK if feeding into Dave's ambitions, while fun, is a smart thing to do. Also hasn't the community done this so many times over in these past years? If you keep throwing the ball to knock the man into a vat of water so often, is it even fun anymore? You know whats going to happen EVERY TIME. its a pattern, yo. This isn't worth anyone's time, we are busy people, except Dave apparently.

3. If there's one thing that Dave brought up that I will defend, is that I am not a fan of the "hive mind' mentality that subsections of this community have. "I found this dumb comment, lets post this on Discord and swarm the fuck!" And I get it man, I do. That there are these dumbass people you wanna share and roast like this is 4chan. Or if you disagree with an opinion on someone you like or hold in high regard, sending a swat team on them is friggin scary and sometimes overwhelming. It's not for a good cause other than to call someone out for their opinion. Not gonna play the opinion game here like Dave did, but there's someone acting like an idiot in a vacuum comment and then there's someone actually being hurtful or causing defamation of character. Which do you think is more worth your valuable time is taking part in replaying to?

It's this mentality that I take personally. In myself and others I care about. It made me almost quit the social end of the community during the Piece-Out days, and many of those same people are active in many Discord chats and more well known/respected groups. There are those who think they are better than the 8+ year old kids that take up a large sum of the community. There are some who look for fights online over unimportant things like design credit or building an idea first. "I made this design in 2005 first-" THEN I GUESS YOU BETTER GET IT NOTARIZED AND PUT ON YOUR RESUME if a simple design/concept means so much to you. Granted, there are some I have met from these groups who ended up being great people IRL. Does not mean people are the same online as they are in person.Β

I will not sit here and say these people are toxic and ruining the community. These actions and feelings are their own and they got every right to do their own thing man. However, keep it to yourself or in your small group. Please don't make this shit public where myself, my friends, our friends, our fans, our peers can see this and feel negative about it. Again, very personal reasons why this swarm mentality to protect or attack someone has gotten out of hand in my eyes. It actively makes me want to interact less with the community. It be rad if there was some more positive or genuine thinking here. The community is heavily segmented across dozens of social media, so cliques are bound to form, even within the same platform. It's beyond a challenge to get everyone together and have good vibes all around, much in the same way Brickfair can be. We build and enjoy this dumb hobby because we ENJOY IT for very unique and personal reasons, right?Β

IDK man, I'm not saying everyone should be positive and cut the shitposting, cause one, nobody external should control that, and two, there is no clear-cut way that something should be. Just like, when you create a large discourse like this on just a regular MOC in a comment section, and a kid, someone shy, a friend, or a partner could see this bullshit? Just think about how it has other effects on people that were not what you had intended.

I ramble. I tire. I made a point (?)

Peace dudes, also again, the MOC is cool.
MOC and have fun, guys!

Hell I've been super reclusive for years. I'm in one discord channel as of the Bio-cup and only for the bio-cup. I had to download the damn app for it so I could help coordinate the planning for it, and I kind of hated having to do it. Otherwise I'm not really involved in the social building scene anymore. Most of the people I was close friends with in "the scene" stopped being part of it years ago and moved on. I like all you guys and I'm always excited to see what you all bring to Brickfair and whatnot, but like, me and the older BZP people are 30, and frankly, y'all are too much energy for me these days!

I was in meetings at work all day, and felt like my gif comment was all I needed to reply with, and then I got on here and like- hot damn.

I agree that hive mentality can be frustrating, but at the same time, it also helps lift newer faces to fame and community awareness sometimes too, so it isn't all bad. At the same time, I also think having general community awareness revolving around criticism and design theory for those who take the hobby more seriously is important.

Anywho, thanks for the compliments on the MOC, I'm excited to see what you have up your sleeves, and I'll assume I'm seeing you in August!

1. Sure, to each their own. I wasn't even commenting on the MOC by itself, I was talking more about how Patrick touts himself as this great original MOCer who basically invented the wheel if you read his descriptions of himself, and yet he's built four of basically the same MOC.Β

2. You're absolutely right Brendan, I do make my beefs public. I always have. We all deal with this deluge of toxicity that can be the bionicle community in our own ways. There's a lot of back alley talking and rumblings in the discord chats and skype groups and places that people generally don't think I'll see or hear about. My response to it has been different than yours. I deal with by standing firm and voicing my opinions, positive and negative. People can either agree or disagree with me, and that's fine, but at the end of the day most people know where they stand with me. I'm not gonna sugar coat things just to spare some people's feelings.Β

I don't know what this means, what does it mean for someone to "Be a fuck?" I just...what? Like being a fuck isn't necessarily bad right cause what if it's a "light a cigarette afterwards" good kind of fuck? Just...Lolwut? Okay moving on. Β

I agree with the repetitiveness of this though. I made the comparison to messing with a trail of ants. You can do it repeatedly and always get the same result, they always spazz out about you poking or prodding them. At this point I'm the guy with the stick and they're the ants. Is it fun for them? They claim it is. Is it fun for me? Occasionally and this is one of those occasions. But I will say this, they must not be too busy if they've got time to make troll accounts to lob comments back at me. Have you seen Daveforeskin? There's definitely someone with a lot of time on their hands. You can dislike me however much you want for the stones I lob occasionally at these hive mind fuckfaces, but at least I don't go around doing shit like that. That's just petty.Β

I want to put this out there for you to see and other people to read to. I want to be friends with you. I like you overall and we do agree on a lot of things in regards to this community, maybe you don't realize that, but its true. I was talking to Ben about this on Skype and you and him are prime examples of someone hearing the rumors and the hype and buying into them(you) or actually taking the time to get to know me and see my point of view(Ben). I'm already friends with a good part of your social circle, shouldn't that say anything about me? And if I'm being perfectly honest here, I think your ego gets in the way of you seeing how similar we are. We could be good friends if you'd just pull your head out of your ass and see me for who I really am and not the rumors people paint me in.

3. YES, this we absolutely agree on. Was my comment stupid, probably, but their response is always disproportionately worse and it statistically has been. I mean this happened.Β  A witty title goes here. ITS OBLIGATORY JOURNAL TIME! For those of you not interested in reading about the recent DrAma(though it also went on flickr to) You may or may not want to read this journal. However, I am going to be speaking in a broader scope about the community overall.
If you would like to read about the non specific, broader community aspect of this journal, please scroll down to
So, as many of you probably saw or know, there was a nice little stint of drama about. its been a while hasn't it? While I won't say I instigated the incident, I take full responsibility for propagating it. I could have just ignored these comments same as most, the reason I haven't is because these kinds of conversations have been quoted to me before by other members associated to Piece Out BionicleΒ  Three years later and not much has changed. I'm just some random jackass on the internet throwing stones. I still don't understand why my opinion matters so goddamned much for certain people to get all up in arms about it like they do. I'd say people need to chill and get over themselves, but I know they aren't going to.Β

First of all, let me just say I completely agree with you. You bring up solid points and issues that the community as a whole faces. You have also went out of your way to make each part presentable and for that I respect you.

Second of all, I'm with you when it comes to being social in the community and such. Nowadays I myself try to stay out of the drama and what not most of the time. The only real reason I decided to come on here and make a comment is because of how the original comment itself was made. I, personally, am not out here trying to fight with Dave, or you, or Patrick, or anybody. The reason to come to the community is to share interests with one another, make friends, and just have an overall good time. Good times cannot really be had if one party is explicitly hurting the other party.

Which brings me to the whole hive mind thing. Yeah, you're right, this community has its own sets of hive minds stemming from different facets, sites, and so on. However, this falls under one of two possible camps:

1. The "hive mind" don't publicly post about their opinions and/or memes and stuff that could hurt the individual. While on one hand this seems like a solid solution, it's also not. Because either way you look at it, this option or the other, there's always going to be talking behind others' backs. This isn't something so easily resolved. But who can say, sometimes it's better to be blissfully unaware of things, right?

2. The "hive mind" is public about their opinions and/or meme and stuff that could hurt the individual. This is the option that has been brought forth. As a result, you have XX amount of people trashing Dave in the comments and going to town on him. I myself am not innocent, like I said, I made a comment on here earlier. Just like option 1, there is still a high probability of back talk happening within the hive minds.Β

Last, but certainly not least, all of Dave's comments kinda are samey. It's like listening to an album on loop where the songs blend into one another. Everything eventually sounds the same at some point, and it's easy to get caught on these things and "feed the troll" and such. Sure, we can be critical of Dave, and sure, we can be critical about how he handles things in public and how everyone else handles things. But ultimately this will never stop until one side either gives up, or it stops becoming an easy target.Β

At the end of the day, we should all just find something new, less hurtful to talk about in our group chats and hive minds. Picking on the same person only goes good for so long before one side stops caring or gives up. It's better to just move onto a new topic that's less harmful to one or many people, but we'll see how things play out.Β

That's it for me, hopefully things can be resolved somehow. Thank you for reading (if you did read it all), and have a good day.Β

But you guys respond like this every single time I have an opinion about well...just about anything. You all come over en mass and throw your collective fit.Β

I'm sitting here laughing with my group to. I leave a couple of comments on one person's MOC, and you all swarm me. That's pretty lame dude. Like way to white knight for your homeslice Patrick. Grayson goes out of his way to make a new troll account just because he's gotta blow his comment load. That's a dedication to pettiness I can't even fathom. All your flipping out, over a comment I made at Patrick about how repetitive and samey he's getting with these "Fancy doodz." If it really doesn't matter that much then why do you all take the time to repeatedly respond as a group? Doesn't really make sense to me cause if it didn't matter you'd just be like "Oh Dave left a comment on pats MOC"Β
"Okay whatever," *goes back to doing stuff.*Β

But that's not how you all play it. You all come over and have to say something because OMG how dare I have an opinion you don't agree with. We've done this song and dance before to the point that it's an amusing little game to me. Like messing with an ant trail just so see them all freak out.
