Description
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: the REAL, Spring Heeled JACK!Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQwRa2…
So here's a project I've been working on for quite a while, and I could hardly be happier with the results. I have reached into the nether and dragged a fictional character into existence (kind of)! Took some work, carving that head and installing those servos, but worth the experience.
Obviously that's me wearing the Ringmaster Jacket and I photoshopped Jack's head on. Wanted to make a puppet rig for him and film him instead of a staged photoshoot, but he's been sitting on my plate for too long and I have other projects what need getting done.
Fun Fact: Back when I drew him for the first time, I based his ringmaster outfit directly off of an existing Halloween costume, just in case I decided to make an animatronic out of him one day.

This is absolutely brilliant. I haven't yet learned how to build animatronics, but it's something that I fully intend to familiarize myself with at some point.

Oh wait no, lighting on the hat is what gave it away for me but it's still a WAY sick animatronic!

It really took me a whole minute to realize this wasn't a photoshop paste-over-the-face picture and it made it THAT much more awesome dude! This is AWESOME!

Thanks mate! The photoshoot went well. Trick was I took a picture of myself, then held Jack's head up in the same location, so both pictures used the same lighting as close as possible. Then it was a lot of tedious green-screen removal work.
Replies like this make that tedious work feel worth it XD

Thanks a lot! I'm really happy with how I managed to capture his character.
It's amazing how a couple trapezoids on sliders can effect expression, isn't it?

Good job this time around. Jack's costume is desceptive. for a moment in the pictures I thought it was You in a mask. the Youtube Video with Jack's disembodied head quickly quelled that silly notion though. though I imagine for someone to make that sort of mistake must be a compliment for you huh?

Eh, I imagine people were too distracted by the ringmaster mannequin to notice photoshop mistakes XD

I am terrified and excited all at the same time. It's so perfect. And so utterly RIGHT BUT JUST SO WRONG BECAUSE THESE THINGS SHOULD NOT BE REAL. BUT NOW THEY ARE.
omg you. ;A;

May I suggest adding light up eyes? That would really creep people out.

There's a few mechanical components that make the eyes move that'd be in the way and his eyes don't glow in the comic besides.

Nah, it's a head, not a mask. Wouldn't be room for the eyebrow lift mechanisms or eye mechanisms in a mask.

Darn, it would have been a great way to scare the kiddies! Like, hide inside a ticket booth in front of a haunted house, pretend to be an animatronic and if one of the kids acts naughty... YOU POP OUT LIKE RAAAAWRGH IM GONNA EAT YAH!

LOL. Nah. i was talking about making more masks. I would feel scared if I saw some bloke in a Jack costume, walking around. I would run and hide and make sure he can't get to my face. To be sure: "Legends can be real."

Glad you think so!
I work on commission, you know. Trying to build up a work history of animatronics. And it'd be pretty easy to make a mask version of Jack (without face movement, of course).
If you have a project in mind, send me a note. I enjoy brainstorming how I could build other things.
