Admittedly I'm not a fan of taking mythical stuff like nagas and saying, "It's an alien." Just saying.
Nicely rendered, though.

The texture of the body and it subtle ornaments. Gives it a very predatory feel compared to most humanoid species you see in scifi

First i loved the perspective you used, i like the angle that shows well the vastness of the scenery, then i loved the details of each building even the natural background gives a sense of arcane and mystery. I love the colours, they give me a sense of danger, hot climate and arcane. The snake statues are elements that caught my interest the most. I love them. Great job^^

C'tekians are various shades of red and black to match the color of their environment.
What did you think about their culture?

scorpionlover42 In reply to SeekHim [2018-10-17 13:25:24 +0000 UTC]
Their culture is much more complex than what you normally see for a reptilian race.

SeekHim In reply to scorpionlover42 [2018-10-17 17:47:51 +0000 UTC]
That was the idea.
And not just reptilian, many think predators are just brutes always eager for just a fight.
Predators are actually VERY smart. They have to be in order to hunt.
But make no mistake they ARE fierce. Imagine having them for next door neighbors!
The Norayis Sector is known as the 'Sharp Sector' for a good reason. The Tkarites who are masters of the blade.
The C'tekians have their fangs and wait until you see the Rylarin!
The Nlians are by far the gentlest race in the sector and many in the Federation are surprised that such a gentle race
could have originated from there. But while Nlians are gentle they know how to stand their ground.
If you have neighbors like theirs you have to be!
The C'tekians trade primarily with the Tkarites. (They were each other's First Contacts)
And both of them are similar in many ways. Both are cunning and deadly warriors and both enjoy physical
and mental sparring and dueling. The C'tekians call the Tkarites the 'Ones who carry their Fangs in their Hands."
And then they are the Rylarin. The C'tekians call them those "Those whose Teeth Drain Life.'
But they also have friendly relations with the Nlians. The Nlians actually gave the C'tekians aid when it came
to organizing food gardens for off-world guests. And like the C'tekians, Nlians live in a harsh environment
and go on treks when they come of age. When visiting Nlians travel with C'tekians on journeys they don't
always participate in hunts, they always kept up and never complain. The C'tekians call the Nlians
the "Gentle Ones with Hidden Strength."

Interesting... I've heard more than one scientist and theorist broach the idea of predators being natural candidates for enhanced intelligence, seeing how the more successful ones develop cooperative skills. I've got to admit that I wonder what the C'tekian language sounds like. I'm imagine that their phrases for Tkarites and Nilans might seem like complex sounds instead of phrases.

Incredible Artwork by thetundraghost!!!
This in amazing it looks like the C’tekians could give the Gorn and or the Kzinti a run for their money; seeing how they killed and ate all of the Nausicans pirates that attacked and boarded their freighter. I guess you do not mess with Norayis Alliance seeing how the Tkarites beheaded and skinned the bodies of the Orion slavers and the Ctekians as stated above killed and ate all of the Nausicans pirates; I wonder what the Ryarins will be like.

I'll give you a hint what the Ryalrin are like.
When a C'tekian finishes feeding there's no body left. When a Rylarin finishes feeding
there is only a desiccated shell left. Tkarites won't eat you but they'll leave a slashed body behind.
The Norayis Sector is called the 'Sharp Sector' for a reason and some people in the Federation
have wondered how on earth a race as gentle as the Nlians developed there.

"WITNESS ME, PUNY HUMAN!"
although, strict hunting sounds quite ineffective, IMO. They'll quickly extinguish the wild population of animals as they grow their population, plus it's time consuming as well. But it is nice to see predatory species that are also intellectuals, for a change, instead of typical "wanna fight bro?" brutes obsessed with combat.

SeekHim In reply to darth-biomech [2018-10-16 22:05:45 +0000 UTC]
To be honest I had some concerns about the hunting.
I know that most reptilians are carnivorous and C'tekians, what with their fangs, are built to hunt.
I was thinking about them only needing to eat at certain periods because on Earth snakes can
go for days without eating and large ones can last up to two weeks. Crocodiles can go a year without food.
Also C'tek is twice as large as Earth. The day side is the size of Earth and the population is about 2 billion
so there are more wild areas.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Also thank you for the comment about them being intellectual. I've noticed predators being portrayed as brutes too.
Predators are actually very clever. They have to be in order to successfully hunt.
Also how do you like the environment? I put a lot of thought into how a red dwarf planet would look on the surface.

Well, maybe they wont overhunt then, but I think that a society first going from "hunting your meal every time" to "keeping your meal in the cage and eating it within 5 seconds of getting hungry" would end up with more time to do productive stuff and should out-compete other lifestyles. Although if they eat rarely, it might not be so much of an advantage if you eat only like once a week. But on the other hand, reptiles are capable of going for so long without food because of their slow metabolism and the fact that they remain completely motionless for extended periods of time, not wasting any energy. Being cold-blooded surely helps too...
Yeah, the environment is great. you certainly had more time to flesh it out scientifically than I did. I defaulted to "green leaves", just because it's more convenient (for the same reason Cameron also changed jungles of Pandora to green, really), but for the spectral types of the suns of Harr system it would probably be something other than green to be most effective color... Especially if you'd consider that the sky is also green. Surprisingly, in this picture, black forest doesn't seems too outlandish.

I'm thinking about the C'tekians being a combination warm blood/cold blood if that makes sense.
Having warm blood would benefit those who live in the tundra and dark side regions.
But at the same time cold blood gives them slower metabolisms.
I really appreciate your input by the way. You give a lot of good reasons and input without drowning
someone in it, like our mutual 'friend' does.

Awesome stuff! I love snake-people... and so huge and obviously predatory! This is a great amount of info, I like it all... except the orbital period of C'Tek.
M type red dwarf stars are quite well understood (being the most common type of star in the galaxy), and we know that the habitable zone is so small that a planet bearing liquid water must be extremely close to it's star... which means the orbital period must be extremely short. The list of known exoplanets in the conservative habitable zone of TRAPPIST-1, a M8V type star (functionally identical to C'Tek, as only small differences exist between mature red dwarf stars) include planets with years 12.4, 9.2, 6.1, and 4.05 Earth days long. A planet with an orbital period of 312 days and in the liquid-water habitable zone of it's star must be orbiting a star with a solar flux slightly less than Sol... far more than any M type Red Dwarf.
Luckily, you can fix this with a single decimal point! Given the information that you've already shared about C'Tek I, it's clearly on the outer edge of it's sun's habitable zone, (it's far colder and more tectonically stable than most tidally locked planets would be if in orbit around a Red Dwarf star) you can just say it has an orbital period of 31.2 days and you're good!
Also these guys are super cool and I'm considering how amazing first-contact with them would be Their markings and muscularity are superb and I love how physical they are.

I made the changes to the orbital period. I might make it even shorter since C'tek's day side is mostly tropical-semi-tropical.
I really appreciate your input by the way. You give good data without drowning someone in it like our mutual 'friend' does.
Also what did you think of the planet's surface? I put a lot of thought into it.
And what did you think of the C'tekian's culture? With them "You eat what you kill," takes may meanings!
Imagine having them for next door neighbors! The Norayis Sector is known as the 'Sharp Sector' for a good reason.

I like it!
The surface is very fun, Red Dwarfs give most of their light/energy in the infra-red spectrum, so black plants and animals that see in infra-red as well as visual spectrum light is excellent. Their culture is wonderfully appropriate to who they are, and 'you eat what you kill' is a great basis for a predator culture. It's too bad they don't have a lot of cooks... I don't eat living animals myself.
C'Tek is another place I'd be very wary of visiting... sharp indeed!

You'd be expected to hunt and then cook it.
C'tekian establishments that host off world visitors grow fruit/vegetable gardens for offworlders
who want plants. But you'd still need have to go out gather and prepare your own food.
Speaking of offworlders the C'tekians trade primarily with the Tkarites. (They were each other's First Contacts)
And both of them are similar in many ways. Both are cunning and deadly warriors and both enjoy physical

I can hunt and cook all day long... 'cause it's fun. Also delicious.
Sounds like the Tkarites and C'Tekians are good friends... insofar as either race recognizes 'friendship'.

Sound like you and the C'tekians would get along great!
Interesting thing about C'tekians is that they don't need to eat everyday.
Like Earth reptiles they can go weeks between meals
They do recognize friendship and can form very close ties.
Thank you. I don't feel that way at times

DBrentOGara In reply to SeekHim [2018-10-19 04:49:27 +0000 UTC]
I eat several times a day! The simplified logistics of predators who don't cook and can go weeks between meals makes me think a C'Tekian ship's mess hall is more like a tiny game preserve and less like a cafeteria!
