These are Orlind, animals native to the planet Nlia

NLIA
Nlia , is a planet that exists in my AU Star Trek ‘New Start’ verse
seekhim.deviantart.com/gallery…

It is the home of the  Nlians who are members of the United Federation of Planets

The planet has three landmasses:
The Northern Land: A tiny northern island continent, roughly the size of Turkey.
The Western Land: A large western continent the size of Eurasia
The Eastern Land:  A large eastern continent about the size of Asia.

The two southern continents are collectively referred to as the Southern Lands
They are comprised mostly of desert with arid grasslands at the northern coasts and southern tips.

THE NORTHERN CONTINENT
In stark contrast, to the Soouthern Lands the small  Northern Continent is covered with thick forests.
It is comprised of three regions: The Northern Mountains, the Central Forests and the Southern (Swamp) Forests

The Central Forests are covered with towering temperate forests.
Most of which are many times larger than Earth trees

ORLINDS
Orlind are mammals indigenous to the Northern Contient
They primarily live in the Central Forests.

Habitat
Orlind favor dense woodlands and are seldom seen in open areas.
Although they can swim they avoid wetlands
They prefer level terrain so they avoid hills and mountains as well

Biology
Orlind are about the size of white tailed deer.
Males are slightly larger than females.
Both males and females have horns which they use as defense.

They are very fast and surefooted, able to run at 40 mph
They have sharp senses of smell and hearing and are incredibly alert.
Although they avoid wetlands they are capable swimmers.

Orlind are herbivorous and primarily grazers, although they occasiionaly browse as well.
They eat grass, leaves, herbs, stems, fruits and bark.

They can live from 15-20 years

Behavior
Orlind are active during the mornings, evenings and at night.
They prefer to flee from danger but if cornered will fight with their horns and hooves.

Orlind live in pairs.
Pairs form territories of up to 20 acres.

Territories often overlap and couples regularly mingle.
In the event a fawn is orphaned, another Orlind couple will adopt it.

Manogamy

Orlind are monagomaus and form pair bonds that last until one of them dies.
They have extremely strong bonds with their partners.
Couples spend about 80% of their time together and are almost never more than 5m from each other.

Couples take turns keeping a lookout for predators while the other feeds.
Whenever danger comes they face it together.
An Orlind will never abandon their mate to danger.

When an Orlind dies their mate soon follows of a broken heart.
The only exception is if a female is pregnant or has a dependant fawn.
If that happens she will live long enough to give birth and/or leave the fawn with another Orlind couple.
Orlind couples are always willing to take in orphaned fawns with their own.

Reproduction
Gestation lasts for six  months.
Females always give birth to one fawn which both parents care for.
Fawns nurse for about three months

Orlind stay with their parents for a year
After that they disperse from their parents territory and wander for about a year with other young adults.

Orlind are fully sized and have fully grown horns at the age of two.
Its at this age that they seek a mate.

Relations with Nlians
For thousands of years Nlians have admired the Orlind for their devotion to their mates.
The term "Faithful as an Orlind" means devotion to someone.

Ancient Nlians seldom hunted Orlind.
On the rare occasions they did, they restricted themselves to dispersed males that hadn't yet taken mates.
By the 3rd century A.D. hunting Orlind was outlawed altogether.

Orlind hide and horns are regarded as sacred and even today used in weddings.
