Since I'm a little new to animation, can there be extra frames with slightly different poses to make the movement seem more realistic or is it better to use fewer frames when it comes to animating>?

Look, I think it depends on the action.
If the character moves fast in a short time. Usually, I use less drawings.
If the character perform a slow-acting, longer lasting exposure. Most likely it is you need more pictures.

Sometimes it is necessary to go from less to more. And to the extent you watch your animation, you are going to give you an idea if what you get is realistic or not.
