Description I was sitting in my room, on the bed watching Crossing Jordan, when Shane came in with a surprize. This huge slug! It was So beautiful I had to show my mom. I took some photos in of him/her (theyre hermaphrodites) in the bathroom while my mom oohed and aahed over him. I'm so glad my mom likes fun stuff like slugs! Well, it was so big that I decided to keep it as a pet. I had a little gallon size fish bowl that was just sitting around collectiong dust, so I washed it out, filled the bottom with gravel from my old bamboo pot, got some lettuce and showed my new pet his new home. Then just a little while later Shane came in again, with an even bigger slug! So, in it went with the other one. Then, like an hour later he brings in ANOTHER! Even bigger than the last! So now I have 3 pet slugs. I dont know how long I'll keep them. If they seem happy I might keep them forever, but if they seem like they want to leave, Ill let em go. Right now theyre in the bowl next to the puter eating chunks of watermelon. Theyre SO beautiful! I will take lots more photos of them when it light out tomorrow. Shane thinks that they wher attracted to the light out in the barn where he was hanging out and that maybe they eat the catfood because they seem to congregate anywhere we feed them.

OH! If anyone out there knows any good slug information sites, I would love to have the link! I cant seem to find much about them. Just basic info, nothing real specific about actual species and things.I want to know what mine are called!

Here's another site with information, including pictures: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limax_ma…

I've been photographing them for two years. Because they're so noticeable, I'm sure that I would have noticed them if they'd been here before that. As darkness falls, they begin gathering though a couple of sources claim they aren't gregarious. We used to leave Meow Mix for the semi-feral cats who often visit us, and the slugs would move in afterward, several of them on each dish. However, when I read that they have parasites and diseases, we stopped leaving the food for fear that they were contaminating it. Also, it can be dangerous for animals AND humans to accidentally ingest the tiny ones; for cats, one or more could be on the food; for people, garden produce should be cleaned thoroughly against that risk.

I have a folderful of photos of "our" leopard slugs, and now I'm adding others' pictures to ANIMALS and to CONNECTIONS; however, I think I'll make a Favorites folder just for slugs and snails.

They are! I did a search for the scientific name and another common name is Leopard Slug, makes them sound exotic! also found some very interesting if not slightly disturbing photos of them mating... [link] Very weird....

I saw them mating once on a nature program - it looked like they just got tangled up and confused for 10 minutes
