Description
A soldier strays from his unit and finds himself alone. With a hand cannon in one hand and a plasma cutter in the other, he's right in his element.I've been watching too many sci-fi horror movies(Alien series,Dead Space, etc.) that I got inspired to create this artwork. As for his gun, to make it interesting, I offset the cylinder as opposed to dead center, and added a pivotal mini-saw on the grip.
Done in pscs....oh, and Happy New Year!

Amazing stuff! Do you pencil first, then scan and colour? Or do you do it from start to finish with a tablet? I'm new to tablet art and I can't seem to keep my hand steady, yet I'm too impatient to do it in vector format.

Thanks for the comments. I used to use pencil, but now everything is done by tablet. It took a couple of weeks to get used to it, but eventually it became natural. Just keep practicing, I used to have an unsteady hand also. Try to draw quickly to avoid stray lines. Good luck!

Thank you kindly! Will keep it all in mind. I've just realised that a good foundation in traditional art is probably the most important lesson anyone can learn.
Keep up the good work! It's really important to give others something to look up to so that they can aspire to do greater things themselves.

I sense some serious mayhem and carnage approaching! Beautiful lighting, unique design, and a spectacular show of form! Even the weapons scream "don't worry, I'm only gonna kill you a little bit!"

Yet another high quality feast for the eyes. I can't really say much for this, since it speaks for itself. And the soldier would probably rip me several kinds of a new one if I made a typo or spelling error

Cool. =D
I now deduce a theory:
off-center = easier barrel reloading
Whether that can be proven: I don't know. And if you're very particular about scientific accuracy, then I'd say the bullet carousel looks like it can fall off anytime. =P

Thanks, you're very observant. I designed it like that not so much thinking about accuracy, but more about aesthetics. You ever wonder why Star Wars fighters have wings? They're useless in space and far from being scientifically accurate, but cool looking, lol.

Interesting. I'd like to see more of this style.
I must also point out that Dead Space is a game, not a movie.

This is AWESOME!!!!!! Definitely can see the inspiration but this is totally you. That is one of the most bad butted looking soldiers I have ever seen! The pose is very dynamic, and do I love the lighting you have put throughout the painting.
My only complaint...
Where is what's looking for him, or what he's looking for, I wanna see it!!!
Absolutely Phenomenal work!! How longed it take.

I just thought it would be cool to see a sci-fi inspired creature in this vivid style you have, like a xenomorph inspired creature. In reality though, I'll take what I can get.
So how long did this take you again???

sekido54 In reply to naldridge [2010-01-13 03:30:52 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the comments. If I did add a xenomorph, it would have taken me a longer time, lol.
I think it took about 3 weeks. I took my time doing this, creating artwork is just a hobby.

I had to download this, it makes a killer desktop, my fav yet!!!
And it didn't have to be much of it showing, something along the lines of this...[link] I think that really would have "completed" the painting- not saying I don't like it obviously I do, just my opinion. Although I do find myself looking around, searching the background for something so that's a good way to get people to look at the whole piece.
What size area were you working in???

I'm glad you like it. It could have been better, though. The final work was around 4000 pixels by 2500 pixels, but I minimized it to 1000x667. Your line art is amazing, keep it up!

Well in the words of one of my old art teachers:
"a piece of art is never 'finished', merely settled upon."
The good thing about working digital is you can always go back and change things.
Oh, I'm rather new to working with a tablet so I just relied on the pixel default in the photoshop software, its like 500x500, just curious because you got incredible detail throughout the whole piece.
Thanks for the compliment! Still have tremendous room to grow and many things to work on.
