Description Presenting 's OC Flareup!

This was a hard piece to do in terms of the pose. Whew! gave me pic of a Green Lantern cover (who's the source of inspiration for the costume design btw) and wanted me to use that pose. Not wanting to be accused of tracing and art theft, i totally changed the position of both arms and the face. Position and anatomical tweaks were also done with the torso and legs. Hope he's happy with this piece.

No references of the face and both upper extremities.

Great work on the face, hair and musculature (as always lol). I am not getting what's going on with his right leg though. I am trying to see if I am missing the pose. What's his leg supposed to be doing? Or is he an amputee hero?

Basing from the reference pose that the OC's owner gave me of a Green Lantern comic book cover, i think both knees are bent with both thighs arc'd towards the back (the shorter one is extended more towards the back. )

Both legs couldnt be seen coz they are directly behind the thighs or the body itself. Usual comic book pose... go figure. LOL

Those poses are really hard to pull off. I've had the same problem with a pose in the past where an arm looked like a donut cause it was folded up as much as it could lol

haha... but if you think there are mistakes in the position of the legs, blame the pro artist who did the pose i based on. LOL.

Well it depends on how you do your art... If you're photomanipulating for instance, it can't be that hard pulling it off lol

Yep! But in comic book art, everything is pushed to the limits... muscle anatomy, flexibility, balance, poses, breast sizes... anything! LOL

But its great how pros manage to balance realism and pushing things to the limits.

I am not a fan of pushing everything to the limits I have to admit. I prefer art that looks aestheticaly pleasing rather than cliched. But in comic books, if the story is solid I don't mind the art style very much. So long as it matches the story style I am fine with it.

Well, i personally like comic book art and they are pushing things to the limit 90% of the time. i take it you're more into fantasy/adventure stuff (other than fashion of course! ) which seldom does breathtaking action scenes in books.

But i gotta give props to adventure stuff for the great costume and creature designs! both areas im poor at

Oh don't get me wrong, I like comic book art but not so much cliches like block colors on muscly figures etc I just think artists nowadays hav much more skill and more resources than they used to when marvel first started and I expect more. I am not easily 'wowed' by comic book art. It seems to be too generic, not individual enough. But some illustrators have done a great job to add style and when that's coupled with a kickass story and interesting characters then it's da bomb.

semaj007 In reply to SilkyWays [2008-07-24 16:57:15 +0000 UTC]

I gotta disagree with you in terms of individual styles coz a lot have evolved since the 90's. The pencillers are more dynamic and detailed. The inker is using more dynamic lines and strokes. And the colorists are juz waaaaay awesome nowadays compared to 5 years ago.

I dont know if you know these guys but they have really unique styles:

Jae Lee
Joe Madureira
Mike Deodato
Clayton Crain

Those are juz a few actually. And we can never compare these guys to painters coz a painter usually does one painting in 2-3 months. These guys do 24-32 pages every month.

As for resources, true... artists could easily render backgrounds by photographing something and edit it in pshop. Other artists also traceover pictures.... and although other artists ive encountered say that the easier you do something, the better you are (ive actually had some sort of a debate in someone's journal here), people in general dont like that... certainly fans who pay for their comic books.

That's what I said that thankfully some comic book artists have kept their individuality. But in my opinion the majority copies an existent style.

semaj007 In reply to SilkyWays [2008-07-25 11:57:31 +0000 UTC]

Well those who juz copy dont make it far in the industry though. Maybe we see their art a few times then they're gone.

Oh.. like the guys uploading here in DA? if so, then i gotta agree with you 95%. LOL.

But comic book artists nowadays in Marvel are really unique and i actually can tell who draws what juz by reading one page.

let me juz gather the sources of those books... hmmm, i think 3-4 stories would do. There are a lot more actually but you have to know the background and history of the characters involved so that wont do any good.

EricLinquist In reply to ??? [2008-07-22 12:10:53 +0000 UTC]

The render is awesome but I gotta be honest here. I can't separate the figure from the notion that he smacks of some sort of Reverse-GL. Every costume element, mask and lines are identical to Hal's original uniform, even the hair style. Your render is super well done but I'm afraid most viewers might see a GL clone visually. Saber's a good joe, though, and maybe that was somehow his intent?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to EricLinquist [2008-07-22 12:18:31 +0000 UTC]

I honestly dont know his plans for the character. He was the one who provided the costume design, physical features and pose actually. I juz did what he asked.

Actually, i even changed the pose he wanted coz i didnt want people to think i traced it off a cover and painted over it coz i dont do that. Didnt want to change the costume elements as well coz it's his character and i dont want to blow my chances of getting paid for not doing the character right.

Thanks for looking out though.

EricLinquist In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-22 12:25:42 +0000 UTC]

I think you did great work here, friend! Maybe Saber's got some add-on design work in the offing that will shift the charcater's look completely. I'm just saying right now if someone puts a ring on his finger and a lantern in his emblem, he'll become Hal Jordan under an orange light. There's nothing that takes away from your adept rendering of the piece!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to EricLinquist [2008-07-22 12:32:18 +0000 UTC]

Haha... that's what i thought at first. I actually asked him for more refernces for the costume and he told me its basically a lantern costume with a different logo and color.

If you ask me though, i wouldve covered his dome with a mask kinda like cyclops. Its a small detail but it could take away the lantern feel in a huge way.

when i'm doing my cover themes i allways look at the piece as a guideline... that way i'm not tracing but i'm still getting the look of the cover...

it's a good piece!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to MangaAngel [2008-07-22 08:31:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks bro! And i guess all my piece needs is a logo and we got ourselves a cover!

I think its always great to find ideas and motivation from comic covers especially the classics. Hey, even modern masters like Alex Ross and Leinil Yu do that, why couldnt we?

MangaAngel In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-22 10:24:05 +0000 UTC]

what about thte back ground?

we will have a hard time without refrences...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to MangaAngel [2008-07-22 10:36:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh of course! But i dont think that comic books would be the best reference for backgrounds though.

There are a lot of artists here in DA who think the best way to do the background is get some pics and tweak em with textures and such to make em look like drawings. They also say why slave around drawing everything when you can easily do that.

True, its the fastest and easiest way and looks good most of the time too but there's nothing better than doing everything by yourself IMO. Adam Hughes spent 4 days juz inking a background of one Catwoman piece. Someone of that caliber and that busy does things old school and i'd like to follow him.

MangaAngel In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-22 11:21:56 +0000 UTC]

no imeant for the piece... doesn't it need a background?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to MangaAngel [2008-07-22 11:28:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Haha... Nah.. First issues dont have anybackground at times. I remember Spidergirl issue 1 havin totally white background. So did OMD issue 2 i think.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MangaAngel In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-22 11:36:07 +0000 UTC]

all the varients for OMD were white BG... also the new crisis i think has no BG... but i allways prefer a to have a BG even if it's kirby bubbles or somepsychodelic frectals stuffs...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to MangaAngel [2008-07-22 11:57:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually it depends upon the mood of the piece... if the expressions or the actions are good enough, i dont think a background is needed. Did you see the new Xforce issue cover with the return of Archangel? No background as well but they used some textures though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MangaAngel In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-22 12:47:21 +0000 UTC]

couldn't find the cover you're talking about... but i did see some blank BG covers... 9 out of 10 could use it...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to MangaAngel [2008-07-22 15:16:45 +0000 UTC]

its Xforce #5 which came out juz this month. It has Archangel flying towards the reader and a blurry pic of the other members. The background is juz some smoky textures with some light sources.

I guess i got it wrong coz it still had a BG... juz a very simple one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MangaAngel In reply to semaj007 [2008-07-22 17:30:16 +0000 UTC]

it has a jet plane too... no?

it's good anough... the details on the smoke\clouds aren't very complex but work just fine...

how do you feel about clayton crane?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

semaj007 In reply to MangaAngel [2008-07-22 18:53:32 +0000 UTC]

jetplane? i dont think so...

As for Clayton Crane, im a huge fan of his eversince i laid my eyes on his work on the Spiderman vs Venom comic he did. And also on both Ghostrider miniseries. His work in Xforce is still awesome but i think he did better in his previous works.

Nevertheless, im still a huge fan of his and love seeing that his works seem to use regular brushes and i hope to emulate or incorporate his style to my own.
