Description
From my series of work based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. This work is loosely based upon a painting made by the fictitious "Richard Upton Pickman". I took some liberty here and instead of placing the scene in the churchyard as is described inthe story, decided it would be more the case of the changeling youth learning by watching in the manner of canines. So here, an alpha ghoul demonstrates by doing, a manner of feeding upon a fresh corpse.
Some voyeuristic / necrophilic undertones here as well I suppose but that are secondary.

This is really great! Very eldritch macabre and gothic. Almost photorealistic! The boy in the background is reminiscent of such archetypal "ghost boys" as can be found in such films as Del Toro's "The Devil's Backbone" and other psychological horror films, especially those from Japan.

Another wonderful interpretation! I love the realism and the corpse-like coloring! Reminds me of Fuseli's The Nightmare. (Hmm... and I see from the comments that others have made the same connection.)
I think the imaginary original was supposed to be a pack of ghouls, but that's quibbling.

Nice. Very good try. I've allways been obsessed with getting good enough to do a Pickman painting but it's extremely hard to live up to the hype lovecraft gave him. I mean how do you make a work that can both inextricably enthrall a person even though the very sight of it makes them want to recoil?

Senecal In reply to BWH-Twilightdrifter [2006-06-25 06:10:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, yeah you describe it well. The moment we define (visually or otherwise) the unknowable, we are able to start coping and adjusting, and so the fear diminishes in the presence of knowledge. I suppose then the best we can do is to make an artifact of the dispelling process, like a scrapbook from hell perhaps, though I am fairly certain a "real" one would include Michael Bolton in some capacity.
Regardless, thanks for taking the time to check it out.

Quite lovely...in a Lovecraftian kinda way . I read Pickman's model about a year ago...but personally my thoughts on ghouls refected somewhat diffrently in mental images of their features. I believed they would have more of a wet sheen to them and they would almost have a pale deathly look to them from being underground. Such as when Lovecraft stated that they had "rubbery grey flesh" In the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath I believe it was, when Randolf Carter meets with Pickman when he is the leader of the ghouls to travel back to the dreamscape though the realm of the Gugs instead of decending the dreamcycle...or maybe it was just me
. But unique personal imaging is what makes art as it is. I do like how you presented them though, the blotchy skin is a nice addition and you are very close to how I imagined it to be. Well, excellent job and good day to you.

No you bring up an excellent point. I read "The DreamQuest..." after "Pickman's Model".
True, some liberties have been taken, epsecially in that "The Lesson", as originally described was set in an old churchyard, surrounded by mulitple ghouls and gravestones. And yeah, there is speculation that the ghoul Carter talks to is in fact Pickman. I think there is no doubt about it.
I have made variations on the actual features, and really think they should be more canine. In this image the ghoul is more likely a hybrid...former human becoming (or has become) the ghoul we see, but still with a trace of humanity even as it feeds on a fresh corpse. I also sought to modernize the figures somewhat... just to bring a contemporary identification aspect and hopefully increase the potency of the image. Usually though I prefer a more expressionist rendering, using the emotive line quality to do the storytellingb ut sometimes quasi-realism is the way to go. I definitely appreciate the informed commentary. Most excellent.

Hey thanks, glad you are picking up on these subtle elements.
This is probably as "realist" as I am going to get, and that was for a special occasion since I was making illustrations for the Lovecraft story.
Day to day I prefer a much more organic happenstancial kind of line.

Great texturing around where it bit her.
Two things: it looks as if she's drooling; did you mean doing that. And also, is the vampire in the back intentionally so young?

Senecal In reply to ismdof [2004-06-14 01:09:50 +0000 UTC]
Well, this is based upon the H.P. Lovecraft story,
"Pickman's Model".
In this image, the child in the background is Pickman, the artist who is watching and learning. The creature in the foreground is a ghoul, feeding on a fresh corpse.
I wanted to bring this setting into the more present day and the fluids coming from the corpse are up for debate.
There is a small worm in the neck of the female body which is probably my fvorite part.

I am unsettled by this image. And, in this case, that is good. *gooseflesh shiver, then shake*
The skin tones, I think, are what drive this. It seems all too fawking real. (Oh god. If it is, please say nothing. I have to sleep tonight. Okay?)
Well done. I must move past now, as I am chilled.
Thank you. And I thot I was losing my sense of smell, for a sec. I just visted the web and websites designs of a dA gallery director here. I was not amused by the calibre of work and blatant lack of webmanship. (Is that a word?)
Praise hosannahs on you, my priestless one. You are irking me in all the right ways. Perhaps I will peruse this 'genre' you play with here. It is so bloodless, it is all a bit too too real.
Me like. Heh. And go find John. I think he would like this. He's playing with little girls. He needs you to help put hair on his chest. With macabre marvels like this.
Hm. I sound like a reviewer. Heh.

I knew I had the picture I was talking about somewhere on a book cover.... so now I found it.
It's by Johann Heinrich FΓΌssli, and it's called "Der Nachtmahr". Now that I see it again I think the connection between you two is more about motif than about style.
If you want to check it out:

I think it's a ver powerful picture and it has been haunting me for years.... in a good way.

Ah yeah, I know that one!
I see what you mean now.
This image "The Lesson" was based on the writings of HP Lovecraft, (Pickman's mode --you can read it here [link] ) and HPL actually references FΓΌssli in his work (calls him Fuseli ).
So that is a really nice comparison. Basically what I set out to do is just that.
Thanks for the feedback!
