And now some Robotech/Macross stuff. I used to play the Palladium Robotech RPG, and naturally I had my own squadron. I'm not sure if they ever gave the Veritech squadrons US Navy-style designations (most of what I know of the series comes from the McKinney novels), but in any case, I named mine VTFS-77 (Veritech Fighter Squadron Seventy-Seven), with the nickname of "Panthers." Hence the tail art.

Since their main combat area would be space, why not paint them black? It never made much sense to have the Veritechs painted bright white where they stood out; I'd think you'd want something that didn't. (Conversely, in atmospheric ops, the Panther VF-1s would stand out like sore thumbs, of course.) And what Navy fighters--even UN Spacy navy fighters--don't look good with some snazzy paint jobs?

The bottom VF-1S is the squadron commander's bird, while the top standard VF-1A is just a regular joe (albeit with their own trim color--hey, Max Sterling and Ben Dixon had their own color schemes, and were mere lieutenants). Note also the kill marks.
