Hey everyone!
Over the past six months or so, I've gotten pretty good at learning how to get the most out of my core membership to make my pages look great! I've read so many different tutorials on different coding and I've actually had a few people ask about my pages and how I did certain things so I decided to compile all of my knowledge into one big journal for you
So first of all, there are some new features in which it's that having a core membership Gives you access to. You can edit your page (add or remove widgets and change where they are on your page) by clicking the "edit page" button on the top right corner of your page, under your badges. These new widgets include:
- Gallery:You can now add folders to your gallery to organize your art, which can also know he added to your page in the "gallery folder" widget. These folders can also be customized for decoration using code you can either create, find for free on DA, or purchase for use! The way to add a folder like this is to go to your gallery "new folder" on the left side. Once you're in the folder, you can click the "folder options" to give your folder in the description, if you want to add decoration code, click the CSS button and copy and paste your code. The way to find gallery code is from browse, click Deviantart Related > Deviantart Skins & Scripts > Journal & Gallery Skins > Complete Journal & Gallery CSS.
- Favorites: In the same way, you can create collections in your favorites, to organize your favorites. These can also be added to your page with the "collection" widget and customized in the same way.
- Custom boxes: These are one of my favorite parts of having a core membership. You can add customizable boxes to your page display anything you want. This could be a piece of art, information about you, a list of projects, music, etc. And the best part is that you can add backgrounds to custom boxes to pretty up your page.
- Journal skins: Another wonderful part of having a core membership is being able to add journal skins to your journals. You can find your new skins by browsing deviant art. The category is: Deviantart Related > Deviantart Skins & Scripts > Journal & Gallery Skins > Installable Journal Skins. Once you find one you like, you can click the install button under the favorite button and start writing your new journal entry.
- Visitors: This is a new widget included with your core membership that lets you see who visits your page and when. You can click the pencil button to change if you want to display their icon, name, or both.
- Shoutbox: This is a fun widget that lets people shout messages directly to your page! You can edit this to change the amount of shouts displayed by clicking the pencil button.
- Twitter:With this widget, you can display your Twitter feed on your Deviantart page, but you have to be signed into an active Twitter account.
- Polls: This is a widget that lets you create a poll to ask your watchers. To create a poll, you first add the widget to your page, then hit the + button on the top right side. You can then add your question and some potential responses and add it to your page. If you need to edit your poll at any time, you can just hit the pencil button. After a while, you'll be able to see how many deviants chose each option.
- Forum:With a core membership, you can now add the "Forum" widget to your page. This widget lets you start a forum thread of anything you want. By clicking the pencil button, you can change how many forums you want displayed on your page at once.
That's a lot of information all at once, and I didn't go as in depth on some of it as I needed for my own page. A lot of people have had questions about custom boxes, backgrounds, and code, so I've decided to include some of the resources I found particularly helpful:
- Custom box backgrounds:I've gotten questions from people asking where they could find backgrounds for their custom boxes. From Browse, you hit Deviantart Related > Deviantart Skins & Scripts > User Styles. Here are some good collections of custom boxes people have already created that I used to find awesome backgrounds:
xfroggiii.deviantart.com/favou…
iraxx.deviantart.com/favourite…
I've personally found that a good way to find new custom backgrounds is by clicking on one I like, and browsing the collections that it shows up in! - Custom buttons: With these you can create buttons for anything you need links to on your page. Some examples might include gallery folders, external links such as your social media or other art sits, etc.
Fella buttons v1
Small wide Grey buttons
- Content holder boxes: These are a tool I found particularly helpful on my page. If you want to use dark backgrounds for your custom boxes, you can use this tool to create white boxes on top of the background where you can add your content.
White Content-Holder Boxes
Warning Content-holder boxes (Red N Green body)
Blue Content-holder boxes
Light Blue Content-holder box
- Colored text: I love this one! It's pretty basic, you can change the color of your text.
Colored Text (Custom box) - More colors
- Scrolling Custom Box: If you have too much content in a custom box for your liking, you can choose to have users be able to scroll instead of seeing all the content at once.

- Wide Content:You can also choose to have "wide content" which uses more of your content box space and can sometimes look nicer and neater. I liked how it looked, so I used it on all of my custom boxes.
Wide Widgets!
- Columns:This is for if you want your content to be separated in columns. This is also a great way to save space and make your page look neater.
Fun with Columns
- Decorations:The decorations I used in my custom boxes are mostly things you can use without a core membership such as plz accounts, icons, and stamps, but I still wanted to add some good collections:
- Plz dividers, letters, numbers, icons, etc: plzcatalog.deviantart.com/
- Stamps: browse.deviantart.com/darelate… you can also get here from browse by clicking Deviantart Related > Deviant Stamps
- Custom box tips & tricks: This is a guide to all other things custom box related! It goes over text alignment, size, fonts, adding videos, buttons, thumbs, and so much more. It's a great guide so instead of typing every part of it out, I decided to just include it here:
CustomBox+Journal Tips n Tricks-Updated 25-Sep-14
There are also some more unofficial ways to use your core membership that people have figured out over the years:
- DeviantID: You can edit your DeviantID in the same way you can edit a custom box to display the same background. You simply add your code in the bio section of the deviantID. This one can get complicated or tricky if you change the code, so here's the tutorial I used:
deviantID widget box customization tutorial - Deviation box backgrounds: You can do the same thing with deviations you choose to display on your page. You might want to do this if you want another custom box type of thing next to your deviantID or at the top of your page, above your featured deviations, since custom boxes cannot be placed in the Art Zone when editing your page. For example, I chose a deviation to display next to my deviantID as a way to create a menu for my page. To do this, you place your code in the description box. Be aware that the background will be displayed on top of the deviation, so you won't see the specific piece of art. Here's the tutorial I used for that:
Deviation-box background tutorial - Donation Pool: In the same way that you can change the background of your DeviantID or a deviation box, you can do the same thing with your donation pool if you want a fully decorated or themed page. Here's the tutorial I used for that, as well as some cool donation bars:

Pastel broken progress bars
Pastel progress bars (custom widgets)
I think that's everything I can think of right now! If I think of more, I'll definitely add it on here and if you have any questions, feel free to comment or send me a note
