Description My primeval Predator. I had two things in mind when I started this pic. The first was that I wanted him to resemble a scorpion persona-wise, so that explains the crouch, the pincer-like arm sticking up to the side, and his club bent upwards and to the front like a stinger. The second thing I wanted was to make him stone age, and to re-imagine the technological side into some stone age equivalents. So his wrist claw is a sabretooth tiger skull, the spear is a set of dinosaur bones, and so on... well, not really and so on, that's really all.

I've looked at your stuff, and if I can throw my two cents in - your line work is good, as are your poses. The next step: no more line work. Make everything out of shadows and negative space.

I'm happy to help in regards to this, but I also know people here just want to do they're thing, so either way it's cool. Let me know if you want a couple things passed to you that were passed to me.

Lol I don't have a thing so I need all the help I can get to find my thing because I know I'm an artist I just don't know which.
Things i'm good at:
Sculpting
Photography
Photoshoping
Things I think I also Might be good at:
Drawing in General
Writer
Things I suck at:
Human figures
Scenic Vistas
Mechanical Drawings
Anime(I don't know how people do it)

So please let me hear your two cents!

If you look at the three things you listed being good at, what you have is the beginning of an animation - sculpting, plus stop motion photography, plus the ability to put it together in Photoshop. You mention that you're decent at writing and drawing, so right there is the ability to create a storyboard (storyboard's don't have to be mind-blowing, just straightforward). All of these factors together equal a short film.

The real question is - is that the art you want to create? If you don't know what you want to do, you will know eventually; it just takes exposing yourself to as many different things as possible.

I've never tried anime and scenic vistas is something I want to get better at but haven't found the time for. As far as human figures go, trust me - recreate one of your line drawings without using any lines. Use negative space (like a shaded background) and shading inside the figure to create the exact same form and impression.

And every pic - almost without exception - needs to have an area(s) that's as dark as you can go and an area that's almost pure white, with most of it falling in between. Contrast is huge in most drawings, figure drawing being no exception.

Hey there, that's totally true, I do have a different texture going on with the predator than the other parts of the pic; I think maybe it's because this was the beginning of a new style for me. If I were to redo it, I'd probably stick a texture layer over the foliage.

Thanks a lot for the compliments, I'm really proud of this pic.

Lol, yeah, or the face huggers in Aliens. Strange, because Ridley Scott influenced James Cameron so much, and James Cameron told Stan Winston he though the Predator should have these crazy mandible jaw thingies; strange how it all adds upon itself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ghost-Shrimp In reply to Seothen [2009-08-22 05:12:25 +0000 UTC]

Especially since those things try to have sex with your face basically, haha. Winston made a good choice though, the Predator wouldn't as been near as unique without it's mandibles thangs. lol

Which one was it that designed the Aliens? I remember years ago there being a line of gory action figures that he designed that were real interesting looking. This was years ago though, can barely remember much about them, except that they were awesome.

And just read, you have a Wocom pad? How much did you get yours for? Whenever I try to paint something in Photoshop from scratch it's not near how i'd like it to be. Hard to get the details clean since my mouse wants to go everywhere. lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Seothen In reply to Ghost-Shrimp [2009-08-22 05:18:41 +0000 UTC]

It was Swiss Surrealist HR Giger that designed the original Alien, though Winston and James Cameron in the film Aliens seem to have cemented the visuals in everyone's minds. Really what Winston and Cameron manufactured was the Alien Queen, how she would look and how to build and move something that big.

Yep, got me a Wacom a couple years ago (back when I could afford one, lol). They are AWESOME. Mine is an 8x10 and back when I bought it it was about $350. That's a lot of money, but some places will try to sell them for $2,000, do not let yourself get ripped off. (Actually, a friend of mine does have a $2,000 one, but it's the size of a desk).

Trust me, it's the difference between night and day moving from a mouse to a Wacom. Since I don't have Illustrator, I still use the mouse and Pen Tool for really clean lines, but the tablet is great.

Ghost-Shrimp In reply to Seothen [2009-08-22 05:56:26 +0000 UTC]

Wow, looked up some of Giger's work and i'm definitely adding him to my list. SO much detail, love that biomechanical look.
I think it's amazing how they build the mechanics and all the puppeteer work that goes on in movies like that. I think in the 3rd Aliens they did some CGI or something? Something about the aliens were different and made them not as believable. Moved around kind of dog like. Still a great movie though.

Holy dang. $2,000. Definitely can't afford that. $350 is more than i'd of hoped but it'll be worth it. First I need a job, however. 8x10 sounds about like the one that was at my school. A whole desk sized one sounds insane. Tons of detail with huge sizes? I'd probably want a jumbo monitor too if I ever went that far.

Haven't played around with Illustrator though. Definitely on my to do list. lol

Seothen In reply to Ghost-Shrimp [2009-08-22 15:31:39 +0000 UTC]

Right on, happy you're liking his stuff. Yeah, they went 3d with Alien 3, but I think Alien vs Predator brought back Stan Winston to work on it, and they looked a lot more believable there (worse movie though, lol).

8x10 is as big as an individual user would really wanna go; I think for a first time out, you might go 5x7; no matter what it's going to be a case of adjusting to it, and I've been told by people that my 8x10 has too many layers of pressure sensitivity, more than an artist needs.

Good luck on the hunt for one! If you're in Canada I'd say buy one from Canada Computers, they seemed to have decent prices.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ghost-Shrimp In reply to Seothen [2009-08-23 23:20:01 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad that they did, even though I agree AVP wasn't near as good. Seems like they brought it back in Alien Resurrection too? I liked that human alien thing.

Hmm, too many pressure sensitive layers? Could still be useful though. If by the time I finally scrounge the money for one if they're near same price i'll probably go for the 8x10 one. Unless the 5x7 is substantially cheaper. I'm from American though, no Canada Computers here.

Seothen In reply to Ghost-Shrimp [2009-08-24 00:17:38 +0000 UTC]

I did a quick check and it looks like there are new tablets out for around $200 that you don't even need to use with your computer - just draw right on the screen, save it to memory, put it on your computer later. No idea if the companies are quality or not, but it's neat that they're becoming a cheap reality.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ghost-Shrimp In reply to Seothen [2009-08-29 03:30:06 +0000 UTC]

Straight from the screen? Hmmmm, does it have the computer screen on the screen? I'll definitely want to have it where I can upload stuff and play around with it. $200 is a good price.

My dad found an older Wacom pad he had that I could probably use for now, doesn't have any pressure sensitivity though which kinda sucks, but beats using the mouse I guess.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Seothen In reply to Ghost-Shrimp [2009-08-29 04:06:34 +0000 UTC]

Pretty sure the ones I saw let you draw straight to the screen - it'd be very interesting if you could draw that way but couldn't see what you were doing until you uploaded it. O_O

I'd say take the older Wacom, get used to it - changing some of the brush settings (especially Opacity) will mirror pressure sensitivity to some degree. In the end, there's always a million ways in PS to do the same thing, you'll find what works best for you with some experimenting.

Holy-- that is one scary looking beastie. That's the kind of creature I'm always afraid is crouching in a bush waiting for me to walk by.

The background really added the prehistoric feel to this piece (yes, I did look at the first one). The shading in his face and on his body is awesome, blended perfectly. It really shows that you put a lot of heart into this piece and yet again I'm struggling to find something to pick at! -- Nope, nothing I can pick at. Except the peacock heads covering his naughty bits -- that's a bit weird. Haha.

Awesome work, seriously!

Hey - thanks very much, I'm proud of this piece, even the weirdness of the bird heads, which I admit is pretty weird. Though someone else insists they're turkey heads, not peacock heads. I personally gotta think they must be some sort of alien bird head, but anyways.
