[full view please]OMG!! The Phantom of the Opera is one of the BEST movies ever!! The music is just so beautiful *sniff*
I felt so sorry for the phantom. he's such a lonely guy *takes him home with me* living down in the tunnels must not be good for his social skills.
Christine (Emmy Rossum) has the most beautiful voice! And she was only 17 when they filmed it!! gaaaaaahh! Such talent!
people, watch it NOW!
hm, spent so much time on their faces and christine still looks like a little girl, phantom still looks like a pedifile ¬_¬ baaaaaah...

this is lovely...the shadows are so important to the story and you have captured that feeling so well.

I love the contrast of the picture. Like the phantom's evil/darkness and Christin's light and innocence (sp? I've been out of school for like a month give me a break) Lovely picture!

My dear, I cannot believe I did not see your deviation before
It's so amazing: the colors, the faces, the pose... the Phantom just looks like Gerry!!! (Don't you worry, I always faint when talking about the Phan...

It depends on what version you like. Onstage, Christine was shocked and frightened. In the film, she was firey and seductive. I think the first version better suits her personality. (Although the second is admitedly fun to watch...)
This is lovely, their expressions are perfect. When I saw the phrase, "Phantom of the Opera is the best movie EVER!" I thought Oh no, another one of those. You proved me wrong. You really captured the mood of the scene. Brava.

"another one of those", eh? lol!!
Yeah, it seems like the onstage version is REALLY worth watching. If I were to ever make my way down to the US where it's playing, I am DEFINATELY going to go see it!
Thanks so much for the comment!! I'm really amazed how many loyal fans of Phantom of the Opera there are ^0^

I have now seen the movie three times and yes, this is so lovely!
Pity so few phans had read the actual novel, gaston leroux's version that is. Although Susan Kay's book should come in a lose second.
Reason I loved this movie was because they kept so closely to the musical and the novel, although they missed out on Erik's (the Phantom's) time in Persia and the fact he built the Opera house and so on, but hey...no nitpicking right? But maaaan, Gerard did a good job!

I must read that book!! Seems like you get a lot more detail in there. The Phantom built the opera house?? really?? there goes to show how much i don't know @_@ But I still LOVE the movie!! I still need to see the musical as well!! So much to do, so little time *sigh*

Beloved-Infidel In reply to seppy [2005-01-29 23:02:29 +0000 UTC]
He didn't design build the Opera House, no. Charles Garnier did that. Erik (the Phantom) designed and built his home under the Opera House. He did live in Persia, though, and built torture chambers etc for the Sultan. Ah, the rosy hours of Mazanderan...
As to Mme. Giry, yes it is her. She was a very fit woman and I think not much older than Raoul. Raoul looks so aged (I believe) because he was so distraught over his wife's death. That's a theory, anyway.

ooooh, conflicting ideas eh? I guess yours makes more sense. I'll have to finish reading the book to get all the details, since the film seems to be missing quite a lot
Your theory about Raoul's fast-forwarded aging process is probably right too. Although exactly how did Christine die? From old age, or mysterious "accident"? (speculating) ah wait, actually, don't tell me, don't want to spoil the story before i read it!

He dsigned and built it, he also served the Shar of Persia and became court magican/assasin for him. He traveled all through Asia minor and speaks....oh...lemme see, English, Russian, Romany, Persian, German and a host of other languges. Hmmmm, what else...lemme see....The Punjab Lasso (you see it all through the movie, hee) is his weapon of choice, he breaks necks rather than strangles with it tho.
Yeah, the book by Gaston and the novel by Susan Kay are the best ones to read. So glad the movie was more like the books! Yay Webber!

woah, who would've thought? the phantom's turning out to be quite an interesting guy ^^
since you've seen the movie 3 tiiiiimes, do you know who that old man and woman at the beginning and end of the film are?? It's been bugging me for quite awhile is it christine's sweetheart?

The old Guy's Roul and the woman's Madame Giry. Roul just doesn't improve with age does he?

madame giry?? the woman who helped the phantom when he was a boy?? o_O shouldn't she be dead by then, seeing roul's erm...aging has affected him so much?

NO! She'll live forever! Hahahahah!....erm...
But yeah, it's her. I got the movie companion with the screen play and it says it's her. Maybe she is imprevious to the effects of time? Or some phangirl granetd her eternal life for her kindness or somatt

*looks at you suspiciously* uh huuuuh...
haha, i'm glad i finally know who they are tho! even if she does seem a bit...unnatural ^^ i wonder why the phantom never went after her instead of christine, you know, since she saved him and all that....or did he? dun dun DUN!!!

macpooky In reply to seppy [2005-01-24 09:47:28 +0000 UTC]
Well he was after Christine because of her voice and, if you go by Kay's Phantom (coughREADcough) because she looked like his mother...y'know, whole Orphelius Rex deal goin' there. But mostly because of her voice and his need to protect her when she was weak.
Madame Giry comes across as his agent and...well...sorta friend. She replaces the Persian (Daroga/Nadir) btw in Leroux's and Kay's novel(s). So he feels...an obligation to her, a respect rather than any deep emotion.
And Giry isn't exactly attracted to him, she just pitys him. So I think thats why he grabbed Christine...he still shoulda knocked off Roaul...*muttergitmutter*

oooh, you've got a point there...plenty of them
yeah, madame giry doesn't seem the lovey dovey type. she'd be a good schoolteacher ^^ and you've gotta admit, the phantom was a bit...hard on christine at times, but ur right, they would make a cool couple ^.^
i just put a hold on leroux's book!! yeah, took me long enough. can't wait to reeead it!!! lalalaaaa! haha, and while i was searching, i came across one called "the angel of the opera: sherlock holmes meet the phantom of the opera" LOL!!! I wonder if it's any good. they're like the coolest characters ever!!

I heard one verison was good- the Canary trainer- but yes, reading the original is THE most important thing to do. But when it comes to other interpretations, go ONLY for Phantom (Susan Kay) or, for humor, Maskerade (Terry Prattchet). Stay far, far , far, FAR away from Night Magic (Charlotte Vale Allen) and Pronegy and anything else like taht (shudder) they are absolutly appaling.

gotcha! i guess you've had lotsa experience in this ^^ i'm still curious how they managed to put sherlock holmes and the phantom in the same story. well, i guess i'll find out soon! Is Leroux's novel the original? cuz i think that's the one i put a hold on.
