The One-Winged Angels
This mysterious antagonistic group appears about a year after the events of Season 1, which means they first show up at the very beginning of Season 2. They all have one black wing and, strangely enough, look like clones of Sephiroth .

As you can see, this is a huge group. All of their Hyperions are originally the Espers from FFXII . (The characters’ Tattoos are also the Espers’ glyphs .) They are broken, unique Hyperions that can defy the logic and rules of the world’s Elements. I explain this more below, but basically it means that normal Element rules, such as immunities and weaknesses, don’t apply to them. …It’s very cheap, but there’s a reason they’re like this.

As in FFVII, Sephiroth has a very strong, almost unbreakable Will. That will was disseminated into the Crystal when he touched it 20,000 years ago. At the time, he was filled with hatred and loathing for all Hyperions. Unknowingly, he placed those feelings into the Crystal, and since unborn Hyperions pass through the Crystal, he ended up “influencing” the birth of new Hyperions. However, these Hyperions differed in that they did not come from Parousia. Instead, they came from Sephiroth. The Eleventh Element, Spirit, touched each of these Hyperions, warping what should have been their natural Elements. These Hyperions were not reborn but newly created at that moment in time. Hence, Phoenix had no control over them or what “Hume” they were born into. In fact, they weren’t bonded to Humes at all. Instead, these freak Hyperions were bonded to the remnants of Sephiroth’s Will—the One-Winged Angels. These OWAs are exactly like the Remnants in Advent Children…except there’s a whole lot more of them. And they’re crazy.

Well, it’s more accurate to say they’re instinctual. When they first appear in the world, they have only one purpose, and that purpose was influenced by Sephiroth’s feelings at the moment he touched the Crystal. He hated Hyperions and wanted them all to die. …Hence, initially the OWAs only goal in life is to destroy every last Hyperion in existence.

But wait. All the Hyperions in present day are bonded to Humes. So how would they exterminate all the Hyperions on the Planet? The peculiar characteristic about this faction is that they are unable to recognize/acknowledge Hyperion hosts. They literally do not see Humes; they can only see the Hyperions within each Hume and thus refer to each Hume by their Hyperion’s name. It makes for some very confusing conversations and battles. For instance, the OWAs call Fei Ifrit, Squall Griever, Grahf Kjata, and so on and so forth. And when anyone tries to talk to them, the OWAs completely ignore what they’re saying, only focusing on the Hyperion within.

The OWAs are instinctual beings because they were born with one emotional drive. They are like the Wrath in this sense. However, they lack motivation and individuality for this reason, something the Wrath did possess. This is the driving point of the OWAs’ development in the story. They have no other reason for living other than killing all the Hyperions, and they don’t even realize this…at the onset.

Who are the One Winged Angels, where did they come from, and what do they want? The clones awaken when Parousia dies….

Riku
Hyperion: Exodus, the Judge-Sal
Element/God: Physical/Sabin, Shadow/Kefka
Weapon: keyblade
Hyper Attack: Meteor
Originally From: Kingdom Hearts
Voiced By: my brother

Despite his teenaged appearance, Riku is the leader, and he is advised by the hooded figure known only as “The Prophet.” The location of their base is unknown, but it looks exactly like the area in FFVII’s Temple of the Ancients with that giant boulder. This dark region is where all of the OWAs remain until it’s time to go on a mission—except for Riku. Riku’s domain is inside that pool (where Sephiroth submerged in the game). Within this pool is yet another dimension that is basically a pink-colored vortex. Riku and The Prophet convene here along with Riku’s Judgment Sphere, Ozma (FFIX).
Riku’s only purpose is to destroy the Hyperions. With this goal, the other OWAs band beside him to wreak havoc and destruction on this tainted world. At the start, he cannot open his eyes to see just how limited his view of the world is….
In FFC Riku’s OWA costume looks exactly like his dark keyblade wielder costume in the Kingdom Hearts series. The only difference is that the Heartless symbol has been replaced with the wing symbol on Sephiroth’s belt in KH.

Ultimecia
Hyperion: Ultima, the High Seraph
Element/God: Light/Relm
Hyper Attack: Eschaton
Originally From: Final Fantasy VIII
Voiced By: me

Ultimecia is the second-in-command of the One-Winged Angels. She is much older than Riku in appearance, but she nevertheless follows his every order. Conniving and ambitious, the black-winged witch watches over the other Angels closely and issues their orders on the battlefield.

Kuja
Hyperion: Chaos, Walker of the Wheel
Element/God: Air/Strago
Weapon: barehanded
Hyper Attack: Whirlwind
Originally From: Final Fantasy IX
Voiced By: my cousin

Kuja is the first OWA to appear in the story. Sensing a powerful Hyperion nearby, he emerges on the continent of Gedrir to do battle with Grahf. At the beginning he mindlessly attacks Hyperions like the others, but eventually he begins to wonder why they are doing so. What is their purpose, and how are they even alive? Kuja begins to grasp at this invisible truth with his own hands, searching for a reason to exist.

In FFC, since Kuja is probably the most important OWA to the plot, we wanted to do something strange with his redesign. Of all things, we decided to let him rock a Mohawk! If you have ever seen Kuja or played IX, this hairstyle is completely out-of-character for him. Perfect.

Cecil
Hyperion: Famfrit, the Darkening Cloud
Element/God: Water/Celes
Weapon: one-handed sword
Hyper Attack: Briny Cannonade
Originally From: Final Fantasy IV
Voiced By: my brother

Cecil, donning dark black armor from head to toe, is the stoic member of the OWA. He partners with Steena, who shares his Element. He does not say much to his allies and foes alike, but he fights with honor, which is an odd characteristic for an Angel. A certain event in the story develops Cecil’s budding personality even further.

Steena
Hyperion: Mateus, the Corrupt
Element/God: Ice/Celes
Weapon: one-handed sword
Hyper Attack: Frostwave
Originally From: Chrono Cross
Voiced By: me

Steena is calm and focused like her partner Cecil. To the untrained eye she may even seem serene. Like Cecil, she fights fairly against her sworn enemies the Hyperions.

Wilheim
Hyperion: Adrammelech, the Wroth
Element/God: Lightning/Edgar
Hyper Attack: Flash Arc
Originally From: Xenosaga
Voiced By: my cousin

Wilheim keeps smiling at his enemies, and he never loses his cool. At first glance he doesn’t look like much of a fighter, either. This dissonance between his countenance and his purpose puts any enemies on edge and comes off more than a bit creepy.

Mint
Hyperion: Shemhazai, the Whisperer
Element/God: Physical/Sabin
Weapon: giant ring blade
Hyper Attack: Soul Purge
Originally From: Dew Prism
Voiced By: me

Mint is physically the youngest OWA, appearing to be a little girl. As if to make up for this fact, she also is the most psychotic. She attacks wildly with bloodlust, desiring nothing more but the complete annihilation of every Hyperion on the Planet.

We were trying to select white/silver-haired characters for the OWA, but in my lapse of memory I forgot Mint actually has red hair. We were too lazy to change this afterward, so Mint just has silver hair in FFC. (I was considering switching her to Kirschwasser, but changed my mind. XD)

Kadaj
Hyperion: Belias, the Gigas
Element/God: Fire/Locke
Weapon: katana
Hyper Attack: Pain Flare
Originally From: Advent Children: Final Fantasy VII
Voiced By: me

The original Remnants are back in FFC too, of course. Kadaj appears to be slightly older than Riku but still a teenager. Hotheaded and brash, he often tries to take charge in battle despite not actually having any authority. His clique within the OWA consists of his two brothers Yazoo and Loz, naturally.

Yazoo
Hyperion: Cúchulainn, the Impure
Element/God: Status/Setzer
Weapon: shotgun
Hyper Attack: Blight
Originally From: Advent Children: Final Fantasy VII
Voiced By: my cousin

Yazoo follows Kadaj most of the time (though he knows that Riku actually pulls the strings). Vain and narcissistic, he values his body more than anything else and does his utmost to keep it pristine while fighting. He also has a habit of making fun of Loz as their personalities slowly blossom.

In some intended visual irony, the more Yazoo distorts from Normal Form to Cross and Hyper Form, the uglier his body gets. I mean, have you seen his Hyperion?!

Loz
Hyperion: Hashmall, Bringer of Order
Element/God: Earth/Terra
Weapon: gauntlets
Hyper Attack: Gaia’s Wrath
Originally From: Advent Children: Final Fantasy VII
Voiced By: my brother

Starting off merely as the giant bruiser of the Angels, Loz develops a childlike personality as he spends more time in existence. Despite his huge frame and intimidating strength, he cries easily. Yazoo is quick to mock him for it, but Loz will never admit to being a crybaby.

Albedo
Hyperion: Zeromus, the Condemner
Element/God: Gravity/Cyan
Hyper Attack: Gravity Well
Originally From: Xenosaga
Voiced By: me

Albedo probably ties with Mint for being the most bloodthirsty…which is probably why the two of them hang out together the most. Albedo is crazy, and he isn’t afraid to show it. While Loz’s immaturity stems from innocence, Albedo is more like a psychopathic manchild. Cue horrified staring.

The Prophet
Age: unknown
Originally From: Chrono Trigger (the name only)
Voiced By: my cousin

At first, because the OWAs are driven by their need to kill Hyperions, they do so inefficiently, randomly attacking any Hume they see. This is why Kuja attacks Grahf in Episode 1, critically injuring him. However, a mysterious figure approaches Riku and informs him that there is a more efficient way to exterminate all the Hyperions (i.e. kill all the Humes, whom the OWAs don’t even acknowledge). This figure is a hooded man known only as “The Prophet.” The Prophet tells Riku all about Zodiark, and that if Zodiark is summoned, all Hyperions would die and the world would end. To someone with no self-preservation instinct like Riku, this sounded like a great idea. The plan was to kill all the Components and obtain the 11 Tablets of the Summoning Spell located across the Planet. The Prophet is the one who gives Riku the Judgment Sphere, which could locate Humes who were Components of Zodiark. The Prophet informed Riku that if he did this, he could quickly and effectively destroy all the Hyperions. Riku likes what he hears and brings The Prophet along as his personal advisor.

And before anyone says anything, no, the Prophet is not Sephiroth and definitely not Magus in FFC. Spoiler alert?

The characters all belong to Square-Enix Ltd., of course (with the exception of Albedo, who is from Namco-Bandai), but their FFC designs were completely created by myself. We don’t use Zalera for some reason; I think it’s because since there are so many Shadow Hyperions this season, we didn’t want to add any more. In planning stages we were going to give Zalera to Weiss (Dirge of Cerberus). Last but not least, this picture is a combination of three notebook pages. Whew!
