Description I've been meaning to do this for a LONG time now. More specifically since October when I got a lot of those "Rape joke" comments on one of my deviations. I know people don't mean anything harmful by that, but I just want to say I find the current use of the word rape (especially here on dA) utterly disgusting/disturbing/sad/wrong.

Rape is not a joke!

It's a serious, dangerous, harmful, violent CRIME!

This is my own personal opinion, which I am entitled to. And in that freedom to speak my mind about this matter, I find that jokes about rape/rape faces/forced sexual ANYTHING, and any other careless use of the word Rape to be in poor taste and NOT FUNNY

Now, I don't particularly care what people do with their time, it is up to each individual to waste their time however they want, and if you want to spread your hate and bitterness, that's entirely up to you. But anyone who makes a stupid comment or is intent on "trolling" I'm just going to block and hide the comments.

Just to be clear though, NO I am not "lacking a sense of humor" or being "oversensitive" or any of those other things these insensitive jerks keep accusing me and others in the group of being. I merely believe that rape is not a joke. It is a serious matter that deserves to be taken seriously. If you disagree, that is fine, you are entitled to your own opinion.

BUT SO AM I!

Please, I only ask that you respect this. If you want to make rape jokes, do it. No one is stopping you. But I would appreciate it if you kept those jokes and your hostility away from me. All I ask is that you respect my right to feel as I feel.

wow... that was incredibly angry, directed at me (as it came into my inbox) and completely and totally the wrong understanding of this stamp altogether. Just wanted to let you know you should probably read more carefully before commenting on things. Now, I'm going to block you because I don't particularly feel like having to deal with that rage you have in you.

I know exactly where you're coming from. I hear it all the time, bad jokes at school like "OH MY GOD HE'S RAPING ME" when someone hugs someone or I sometimes hear "LOL rape" It's never a joke and I got bullied for ages for saying that they're horrible at making jokes because rape is never funny. I know someone who was literally raped and she stopped going to youthful areas including school because the "rape jokes" are never ending and immature. It's also not hot or sexy or whatever people seem to think it is, and if they do then they're twisted and have a sick fetish.
It's so hard nowadays to just talk to someone or hold hands with someone without some immature little brat yelling "rape" especially when it's used in games it pisses me off. "I raped them so hard" I hear that on steam and mmo's.
Wow this is a long comment. Hopefully you don't find it bothersome. I just completely agree with you. C:

sent me a video of an anime boy being raped as joke once and I told her that it wasn't okay and she laughed at me because I found it offensive and that it was my fault that I didn't think it was funny

She even posted the link to the video in a public conversation where anyone can happen across it D:

"Rape is never, ever funny.

Catastrophically-violent murder and torture, on the other hand, is fucking hilarious!"

So long as the above viewpoint(accurate or "oversimplified") isn't one you express, then I'm perfectly fine with you finding rape jokes offensive.

What I take issue with is glaring hypocrisy, and double standards. Not standards in general.

Dark comedy jokes are an important part of life, sure rape itself is bad but it doesn't mean it can't be jokes about. Serious things are usually dark and depressing and not joking about it at all just makes it sad, jokes about bad things are needed to keep it from getting too sad. Besides, jokes are flexible and rape jokes are not always making fun of the victim, I once had a cousin who got raped by a close friend of hers, so to cheer her up I made the joke of, "raping you was probably the only way he could've gotten laid," that joke did not mock her for getting raped, but rather him for raping her. Anyways, stop being such a close minded drama queen, and good day.

The sad truth is is that you are indeed a close minded drama queen, I bet you never even thought that maybe a rape joke could be mocking the rapist rather than the victim. [link]

Andi1990 [2012-07-28 22:22:33 +0000 UTC]

I believe anything and everything can be the subject of humour. Comedy often comes from a very dark place. It allows us to transcend our suffering and see the absurdity of our situation. I understand that we all have our limits and that, depending on the joke, we may not think it is funny. The subject itself may be too traumatizing for some to even mention, let alone have a laugh about. However for some people, pitch black humour is a coping mechanism. I'm not a rape victim myself, so obviously I will never know unless it happens to me but I know that such a coping mechanism has helped me through dark times, as it does for many people.

I think it's wrong to assume that people who joke about dark subject matters (including rape) are hostile or hateful or even bitter. You don't have to be a misanthrope to enjoy dark humour, nor do you lack empathy for it. That is why I wouldn't joke about rape around you or anyone else who feels uncomfortable around rape jokes.

I agree that rape is no laughing matter. It's a similar but more intense idiocy than jokes about other forms of domination-and-powerlessness. But I don't agree that it's "immature". I believe it is "anti-social" or "sociopathic". It reveals a tendency or proclivity in the jokester to actually commit such crimes (or, in lesser cases, to wish for certain other people to be raped). I can't count how many crime dramas (including Law&Order:SVU) have made a big joke about the criminal they've caught getting the kind of punishment he deserves -- to be repeatedly anally raped in prison. If everyone thinks that should actually be part of their punishment, then they should codify it into law. If not, then make sure it never happens.

Anything can be joked about. It depends of the joke itself.

Liking a rape joke doesn't mean that the person likes ACTUAL rape. I know a few persons who were raped and still joke about it.

Also, what's with the nonsense responses "RAPE IS NOT A JOKE!" when someone says that find rape jokes funny? Did the person clearly said that finds actual rape funny?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SerenEvy In reply to RagingSalamence [2011-10-28 16:47:45 +0000 UTC]

Anything can be a joke, but not everything should. If your mother was killed right before your eyes and then someone made a joke about killing moms... would that be funny? would it be appropriate? Sure, they might not be condoning killing moms, but doesn't it seem like they're belittling your pain by making a joke out of the fact that your mother was just killed right in front of you? That's what rape jokes are. Doesn't matter if the person making the joke disclaims that they don't actually like rape. And the "nonsense response" that Rape is not a joke isn't about finding rape funny, it's about the fact that rape jokes trivialize a very real, very serious, very traumatizing crime. You're entitled to love your rape jokes. Thats fine. I have no interest or intent in stopping people. But I have as much right to hate them and express my opinion about it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RagingSalamence In reply to SerenEvy [2011-10-28 17:15:13 +0000 UTC]

I don't find ALL rape jokes funny, just the VERY silly ones. Even my 11 years old brother laughed at a one I told, and he have FULLY clue that rape is a crime.

It also depends of the victim, I know a lot of rape victims that laugh like hell at rape jokes.

You have rights of expressing your opinion. I think the founder of #Say-NO-to-rape-jokes should act like you. She can't even find the difference about a troll stamp saying "RAPE IS VERY FUNNY" against a actual one. She always flip off over it, when it's clearly that the creator made it for getting sensitive people mad at him. She also consider that everyone who like rape jokes is a sick fuck that should be locked in a asylum. I find this exaggerated.

TL;DR It's fine to dislike rape jokes. But it's STUPID getting butthurt over them. Enough said.

Everyone is entitled to their points of views, but it goes both ways. Its fine if you support rape jokes, that is your prerogative. But going on to other people's pages or into groups, like so many people have done with #Say-NO-to-rape-jokes is insensitive and unnecessary. I do agree that ~Asari-are-hot 's response to the baiting of some trolls was excessive, and I did have a talk with him about a month ago. To my knowledge, he's understood that not everyone can be reasoned with. But I do understand his point of view and I support the fact that he doesn't just sit back and take it. He's angry, and I don't disagree with him on most of the things he has said. However, I think its pointless to argue with some people, which is why I blocked so many people when I became cofounder there, and hide all offensive comments. With trolls thats really all we can do.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RagingSalamence In reply to SerenEvy [2011-10-28 18:07:12 +0000 UTC]

They did it because he feed them TOO much, also some of the person weren't trolls themselves, they just took the opportunity since he was acting like a lulzcow. I know most of the persons who stalked the group, even one of your members threatened me, telling me to die in a hole, then blocked me before I could respond.

It is sad that people could think so little of such a serious topic and belittle it with stupid jokes, but we can't really stop them from doing it. Still, we don't have to like it, and that's part of what SNTRJ is about, expressing our opinion that we don't like those jokes.
