Description And we have finished.

This is my entry for s contest.

The goal was to create a gym leader meme for the Pokemon universe. The leader had to have a gym (duh) and a type preference with a team of four pokemon. Description is below. Hope you all enjoy

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Newman
Classification: Gym Leader
Gym: Blackwood Town Gym
Badge: Twilight Badge
Type Preference: Dark Type

Description: Newman runs the Blackwood Town gym, a Dark type themed gym in the Sinnoh region. Newman loves Dark-type pokemon for their versatility and cunning. At his gym, he uses his team to teach trainers how to beat opponents by using their own strengths against them. He shows them how to turn their pokemon’s weaknesses into strengths and then draw in an opponent, make them let their guard down, and then punish them for it. He does not believe that any pokemon can be classified as “weak” or “at a disadvantage.” The mantra he instills in any trainer that wishes to join his gym is very simple: “There are no weak pokemon, only weak trainers.”

Newman himself is a very laid back person. He laughs with his students and will crack jokes and never takes himself seriously. However, when it comes to training and battling, he is all business. In fact, some would even call him deceitful. His pokemon will feign fear and lure opponents into a false sense of security, only to be hammered by powerful attacks.

Because of this, he is well respected by the other Gym Leaders of the Sinnoh Region. He especially enjoys training with Maylene, the Fighting-type Gym Leader of Veilstone City.

Background: Newman spent most of his life growing up in Blackwood Town. He always looked up to his sister, Karen, who went on to lead the Elite Four in the Johto Region. Newman always said he wanted to one day be just like her. At the age of 10, Karen gifted Newman with his first pokemon, a newly born Eevee. Newman, would constantly train in the Blackwood forest with his Eevee. When asked what he would evolve his Eevee into, he would always smile and say, “I don’t know. Eevee will make that decision, and I’ll be fine with that.”

One night, while he and his Eevee were training in the forest, Newman got separated from his partner. While searching for his lost Eevee, Newman accidentally stumbled into the cave of a very territorial Ursaring. The Ursaring attacked and Newman, having no partner to defend himself with, ran. The Ursaring chased him through the forest until Newman tripped and fell, leaving himself at the rampaging pokemon’s mercy. Just when he thought the Bear Pokemon was going to obliterate him, Eevee jumped from the shadows and landed a headbutt square in the Ursaring’s jaw. The Ursaring stumbled backward, and Eevee began to tremor. Bathed in the moonlight, Eevee, defending his partner, evolved into Umbreon. Using his newly developed strength, Umbreon knocked out the charging pokemon.

After recovering from the incident in the woods, Newman and his Umbreon decided it was time to move out and explore the world around them. With his Umbreon in tow, Newman set out to explore the Sinnoh region.

The first pokemon he added to his team was Weavile. While exploring Lake Acuity, Newman came across a lone Weavile. At first, the Weavile acted coy and friendly towards Newman. But when he got close to offer the pokemon a berry, it quickly knocked him down and stole his Poketch. Newman, with feelings of both anger and admiration, chased the thieving pokemon across the tundra. The Weavile almost got away, until it trapsed onto a frozen pond, which suddenly gave way under its weight. The Weavile began clawing for its life and Newman sent Umbreon to its aid. Using his newly developed psychic powers, Umbreon lifted a large chunk of the frozen pond onto the land, with the Weavile hanging on for dear life. With the Weavile still sputtering, Umbreon walked up and, with a glare, snatched back his master’s Poketch. After making sure that the Weavile was alright, Newman headed back to Snowpoint City. While entering the Pokemon Center, Newman saw a reflection in glass doors. It was the still wet Weavile, who had been following him all the way back to the city. Newman laughed and tossed a pokeball at the sopping grateful pokemon, who jumped into the air and activated it himself, thus joining Newman’s team.

The next pokemon to join the team was Honchkrow. Newman and his party had travelled to Solaceon Town to visit his sister, Karen, who was breeding her Murkrow at the Daycare. While Newman and his sister chatted at the Pokemon Center, they overheard a commotion coming from the Day Care. They went out to find a pair of Team Galactic grunts filching the pokemon staying at the Day Care while the owners watched, helplessly tied up. Furious Karen released her Houndoom to stop the Galactic Grunts, and Newman sent out his Weavile to assist. The arrogant grunts were quickly beaten by the wicked combination of fire and ice and fled leaving their pokemon targets behind, safe and sound. So impressed by her brother’s abilities, Karen decided to hand over the egg her Murkrow had left to Newman. Newman promised to take special care of the baby Murkrow, and he did. He raised it into a powerful Honchkrow that is now known to be a powerful staple to the Blackwood Gym.

During his journey, Newman decided to take a trip through the Battlezone, to see if he could find a few trainers to do battle with. He found many to choose from and battled them accordingly, usually making friends out of those he defeated. However, there was one exception. While on the outskirts of the Battle Frontier, Newman came across an Ace Trainer named Kessler. Kessler was obsessed with beating every single trainer that crossed his passed. When he met Newman, he saw him as nothing more than a notch to be added to his belt. What he didn’t expect was the absolute power his pokemon brought into battle. Kessler’s Machamp, Medicham, and Absol all fell with relative ease. What Newman saw next infuriated him. Kessler began screaming at his Absol, who was the last to battle. He called him a worthless dark type and said he knew should have never let him onto his team. Coming to the exhausted pokemon’s defense, Newman told Kessler to back off, telling him he was the reason he lost the battle, not Absol. Furious at being contradicted, Kessler threw Absol’s pokeball into the woods, spouted some very mean things towards Newman, and left Newman and the emotionally and physically hurt Absol together. Newman sent Weavile and Umbreon into the woods to retrieve the pokeball while he healed and consoled the Absol. Newman decided the best thing that could help this poor Absol would be to take him with him, train him, and build his confidence. Absol has been part of the team ever since.

After years of journeying throughout the Sinnoh region, Newman decided to return home for a little while and let his pokemon get some much needed R and R. When he arrived home to Blackwood town, he discovered that they had set up a brand new Pokemon gym. He decided to watch a few battles and went into the gym. There , he watched the very brash gym leader Katya defeat every opponent who came her way with her Bug-type pokemon. What Newman also noticed, was that the only types of pokemon battling Katya’s bugs were Dark types, Grass types, and Psychic types. Finding this rather odd, he did some investigation in Blackwood Town. There, he found out that Katya had instilled rules at the gym that competitors who challenged her gym could only use those types, claiming it was a test for the trainers to overcome their own disadvantages. This not only was disheartening to trainers who were trying desperately to gain the badge, but also to the townsfolk. No one had beaten Katya at the gym since its inception and trainers began to just avoid going to the gym altogether, defeating the purpose of building the gym in the first place. Newman, after talking with his Dark type team, knew what he had to do. He marched into Katya’s gym, and demanded a match. He agreed to use only his Dark type pokemon, and the stakes would be control of the Blackwood Gym. Katya, riding a long standing win streak with her powerful bugs, accepted Newman’s challenge. What she didn’t expect was that Newman’s Dark types were equally powerful and he had trained them to counter any type disadvantage that came their way. Katya was defeated, without dropping even one of the pokemon she held the type advantage over. Disgraced, Katya handed over the keys to the Blackwood Gym and left town. Newman has been running the Blackwood Gym ever since, offering trainers to use any pokemon they wanted to try and earn the Twilight Badge.
