I had two Eastern Spiny's as pets, Little Flapjack and Stumpy (he only had 3 legs).

That long nose is a snorkel. They can rest vertically below the surface of the water, with nothing visible except the very tip of the nose.

last summer i 'rescued' 15 softshell eggs......it seemed the place where all these mom's laying their nests was also a prime spot for some of the asians who believed the eggs were a sexual enhancer would hunt them to eat. i counted 38 nests and was only able to find 35 eggs on the second day thanx to some of these people digging them out.......of the 15 13 hatched beautifully and omgoodness were they awesome! i released all but 1 and THAT one did wonderfully till i gave my sis and neice who wouldn't get it a uv light or anything.......grrrrrrrrrrr

Aww!
My sister and I had one of these for a pet for many years, one that we'd found when we were little. He grew too big for his tank, so a few years ago we let him go. I hope he's doing alright!!

They sure grow much larger than I thought too. I'm sure he's doing fine. Turtles aren't one of those animals that keep their captive memory very long.
Well, most don't-I found out the Common Snapping Turtles do longer. I let some go one summer and for about a week they would come to the dock and see us. They seemed to recognise us. That was very odd but very cool-eventually they stopped doing that.
