Description
Pandorus Sphinx - Eumorpha pandorusPennsylvania, USA
July 24, 2006
This is the first I've seen one of these in Jim Thorpe-I found a few down south in SC and NC. This one is bigger.
It was a delightful surprise to find this under a towel I had hanging on the porch ^_^

Actually he was just sitting on a towel on my porch-they don't tend to fly in the daytime-makes them really easy to work with.
I like to photograph nocturnal insects so I leave a light on with white cloth for the bugs to land on and hope they stay put until morning. (recently I started using a bug zapper with a sheer curtain wrapped around it-that spectrum seems to be what they like best and with the curtain they don't get killed ^__^)
Give it a try-you get some really cool surprises.

There are species that are bigger still-but we don't have them here in Pennsylvania. I have never actually seen a Pandorus Sphinx Moth in flight-but I have seen other species the same size and they are awesome!

So many people think moths are bad-I guess because of "clothing moths" and moths are nocturnal but they are just as beautiful as the ever popular butterfly.

WOAAAAAAAAAAAAAH did it feel cold? Moths usually feel cold for me. That is -BEAUTIFUL- It looks like his wings are still soft O.o

Most "furry" things feel sort of cold when you just touch the fur. so yes-it felt coldish.
Moths wings are so fragile-I think of them as being soft-even when they aren't fresh out the cocoon.
