Description I guess watching Buffy on DVD in my whole freetime has its side-effects on me. And I longed to make a classical vampire picture with a little twist. I think it turned out well. The vampire girl was inspired by Spike with a lot of GlamRock touch. I wanted to have a subtle erotic feeling mixed with a bit of more or less hidden sadness.

In regards to MaxPeterson, he does make some interesting points, though I don't agree with how he phrased some of them: I think the shading and highlights in the hair are great and the hair is realistic, but the way the roots look throws it off.
I actually like all the jewelery but will admit that the raven should be somewhere else. I didn't really notice it at first. Maybe if the picture was a little wider and the raven moved over so it's more noticeable? Or even in the background, it does seem to be in the way.
I like how the background is fuzzy because it puts more focus on the girls. And the "poser crap" comment was uncalled for.
He says what he thinks needs improvement, which is fine, and he gives advice (which is actually really nice), but he's very critical. I wouldn't discredit the advice because he seems to genuinely want to help (or else he would've just said it was crap and not given thorough advice on how to help but he could've phrased it better. Some of the comments were rude.

MaxPeterson In reply to Fira21 [2009-09-27 17:07:29 +0000 UTC]

its rude right, coz im pissed of that what isnt actually a render program its more a posing program became featured by joannastar as DD only because sha cant do it better.

Poser is not an art tool its just posing. Poser alone is stupid. Actually Poser is part of the workflow not the central program. I cant stand it how DDs wer chooses in the last time. It has nothing to with the creators coz they dont have influence. But Poser or C4D, 3dsMax or Maya.. the points of how to decide what is good and what is bad are everywhere the same. And a big factor is how it looks like. I cant help me but i dont see any AO. How its focused is actually no point of criteria. I can make a big red arrow with MS Paint to show whats in the centrum. In this case may it would look better.

To the hairs.. i dont know how its handeled in poser but it doesnt has a hair grow plug in. As far as i do know its just a textured plane with alpha channel. its not possible to make nice hairs just with poser.

Sorry because of the rude kind of me but if im reading this "amazing work... absolutely amazing1"-flaming .. i rlly dont get it.

There is no difference between the world of the "real" 3D artists and the world of the posers...
I mean u cant model with poser... u cant texture with poser... u can actually only rigg and pose downlaoded or in an other program made content. So u need Photoshop and a modeling tool. If u say u dont have a modeling tool how did u get these two models? do the only possible answer is that u downloaded it and put all together what is not fair and then becoming popular for it even if its only for one day. The suggestors and GMs should see such questions and research that what is self made.. how is it done and that could lead to a final decision.

In the development of deviantart i noticed that GMs and admins became less carefully what seems that DA turns to a less serious forum. So just to understand my rudness. But its good that u understand my point as critique and can take it as just hide it. I point out the bad things i see, if it will be ignored the is no improvement.

"the only possible answer is that u downloaded it and put all together what is not fair and then becoming popular"

Photo-manipulation is exactly the same thing. G-Mod is exactly the same thing. Certain artisan crafts are exactly the same thing. Taking something that is already there - whether it be stock photos, downloaded skins or models, or pre-made craft dolls or supplies - and editing them to your fancy, to create something different and hopefully artistic - that is simply the nature of some forms of art. Nothing is truly original - the whole of the artistic community, over centuries and cultures, have always borrowed from each other in some way or another. And on that note, what about fan-art or photography as a whole? Are those artists not taking something that already exists and altering or capturing it, and calling it their own? You can't tell me there's no popular photography, no popular fan-art.

I would say part of what defines the value of a piece is the amount of effort that goes into it. Now, sometimes you can look at art and gauge about how many hours were put into a piece. Sometimes the artist even tells you. But unless you are the author of the piece, you'll never truly know.

As for dA being a less serious forum.. I have noticed a decline, in a way. The decline has even affected our artists. Some have left because of it. But this is a small, small fraction of the community, and the overwhelming majority of artists here are here to share their art, and will continue doing so.

Well, if you think that it's an inferior program, isn't is more of an accomplishment that she can make something that everyone still loves? Either way, I don't know much about programs, so I can't really argue which is better, but I've noticed that some are quite complicated especially if you're used to another program.
I think that hair is done well, it has different tones and the curl is realistic, it's mostly just the roots.
Can't you draw your own outline in Photoshop? So couldn't you do the same in Poser to get the two models? Like I said, I don't know about programs so...
DeviantArt is for everyone, there's a lot of good work on here and a lot of bad as well, but that's always been the case. It's an art forum for everyone so not every piece of art is going to be amazing. I can understand that you're frustrated because yes, DA doesn't focus on expert quality, but it never has really and this piece is still worthy of the DD. And I understand the critique but taking your frustration out on just one person won't help. If you're concerned about the GMs why not try and e-mail them?

I personally like the raven where it is, this is a matter of personal taste I guess and I really love to create scences full of stuff. I don't care about the "poser crap" comment I can understand why other/"real" 3d artists/creators are frustrated. But honestly to compare a high end and a "low-end" software is like comapring manga and the art of Carravaggio. Poser/Daz studio have a lots of limits, everybody who has tried to fake a sss in it will know what I am talking about.
This is definately not one of my best pictures, people seems to like it though, but "technically" it is not and I know that. I have made improvements on light, textures and shaders until now (if you want you can have a glimpse at my newest work and look at the water there which is fine for the limits of my software) and I am adult enough to deal with critique well. Yet the advice of using another software is to me not usefull. I would like to get tipps to get the best out of the stuff I already use instead of changing to something else.

Fira21 In reply to SetoKaibaDesign [2009-09-27 17:15:04 +0000 UTC]

That's true, it is a matter of taste. I don't think it has a lot of stuff, I like the background myself, just because something is full of stuff doesn't mean it's crowded. I like all the tombstones, it gives it a spooky feel which considering there's a vampire in it...
I don't see why this isn't considered real 3D. Even if it's not one of your best pieces it's still good and I'm glad the poser comment didn't bother you. It's not even my work and it bothered me, heh. But I'm like that I suppose. I don't think anyone should be called a poser because unless you're directly copying someone, everyone's work is original and yours is. The pose is something new, I haven't much in this kind of pose. Usually, it's a hugging hold or the person is completely restrained, this is more a caress than anything (and I did see the water in your newest picture, it's shimmery like real water and the candles reflecting in it is a nice touch).
I myself can't give much advice in the way of software seeing as I don't have any and couldn't do something like this even if I did. Either way, I think you did an awesome job and I know it's silly but I got mad when he called you a poser. See, I'm strange in the way that those comments don't bother me that much but I hate to see other people called names and their work discredited just because the software they use isn't top of the line or their work is different. I'm sorry again, I know it's not my business. I just do like this piece. I think his comments about the piece were critical, but fine, but some of what he said just bothered me and I'm sorry if I bothered you with it.

I am really touched. It is nice to see someone caring for others, this is really rare. I would not use the term "strange" here, I think it is a very noble gesture. No need to be sorry.
Just don't worry about the old arguments the 3d community has, it is annoying and sometimes silly and nothing that can ever be solved. we are a little like Orcs and Elves. I had my fair share of argues about it too and it was no use, just gave me headache
The pose was giving me some trouble too, because on the first tries it looked to harsh and brutal. But I wanted something more romantic and sad. I don't know if you have ever seen Buffy on TV but the relationship between Spike and Buffy was the inspiration.
Actually I am more satisfied with the "a day on mars" water (this is my newest pic )it comes closer to realistic water then the other piece. You can see a little through it and catch a glimpse of animals in it etc...

Thanks. See, I agree with criticism but I feel strange if I try to criticize a work I really like. It's weird for me to say "I like this" but then say "I don't like this part" so I felt weird about equally agreeing with him but not agreeing with how he phrased it and trying to explain that... I'm not that great with words.
I'm not really part of the 3D comm, like I said I don't really have any programs. My problem would be I could try to do something in Photoshop but I'd get so focused I wouldn't want to do anything else. I'm one of those people that if I don't finish something right away I usually won't finish it. Plus I wouldn't know where to start. I'm going to try someday, but the key-word is "someday", heh.
I haven't seen a lot of Buffy but the little I know about it seems to be the vampire falls for the vampire-killer eventually and serious emotional pain ensues. Which this picture seems to depict to a T.
And you're right, the water on "A Day on Mars" is really cool. I also like the mayflies swarming to the light.

I do a lot in Photoshop, in "real-life" too. If you ever need help with it, just ask
i am no good with word too, especialy because english is not my mother language.
Buffy is nice. I do not like the first seasons much, they are badly translated in german and lost a lot of spark. But later everything gets more serious and the whole "vampire falls for slayer" part is really great done and portrayed in a totally new way. F.e. in most movies woman are the victims of abuse never the ones who are abusing. I read interesting and serious discussions about it and it really sharpened my view...
Did not know they are called mayflies but to me these insects are a symbol for "carpe vitem" since they live so short only...

That'd be cool. But like I said, it may be a long while before I delve into Photoshop.
See, English is my first language, I just have trouble getting my point across. >_<
I've been told I should watch but there's a million and one other things I've been told to watch as well so I don't know where to start (I grew up in a small town so I haven't seen/read much and was never too interested in real-people shows... I love the cartoons/anime! lol).
That's true, even though in real life it can happen to either gender, the woman is more likely to be the abused one in a movie relationship, which just enforces the whole "men can't be abused, they can only be abusers" stereotype.
Well, I'm not sure if they're called that in other places but in Canada they are. Mostly because they hang around the most in May and are almost all gone after that. Though they stick around my hometown for most of the summer, which is strange cause they die everywhere else.

I see.
I like anime too. But being a german I have really bad luck because they never show the good stuff here.
Yes you are right and seeing the reactions of other peoples has really shocked me. It seems that most people can not feel the same sympathy towards an abused men then towards a woman.
We call them "One-day-fly". Unfortunately I live in Berlin and there are not too many of them. Other german regions have thousands...

Fira21 In reply to SetoKaibaDesign [2009-09-28 03:16:29 +0000 UTC]

Ouch, yeah that would suck. I have an interesting enough time trying to find english-subtitled anime, I can't imagine how hard it must be to find german.
I know, I mean, I can understand where the mindset came from but shouldn't we be past the whole "only women can be victims" thing? It's ridiculous and nigh-on impossible for a man to win a rape case.
Ah I see, that makes sense too as the flies themselves only live for about a day but the species lives about a month in May. They used to scare me actually (I was swarmed by them as a kid). I think they're neat now but they still creep me out a little (I'm slowly working on that). I'd like to visit Berlin someday actually. I think it'd be fun.
They do have a tendency to breed a lot. It may be that Berlin is too big for them though. They tend to like more rural area, y'know, being bugs and all, lol.

Ok Here is what I think about that piece

Good: Bad:
Clothes (Tex) Light setup
Body (If u have done it self) Scenery
Background (+texturing)
Clothes setup
Hairs are just bad
The Body textures, they are just one color

All in one does it looks like downloaded and posed. Even if it is all selfdone, what i cant believe, there is no proof of taste. Even scenery, posing or details. It dont looks organic or humanoid. Maybe u just hit exactly the taste of joannastar. even if she has actually non //offtopic (search scorpion fighter)

What u could have done better:
First export poser stuff in C4D that would give u more controll about styling especially hair. The hair module in C4D is way more powerfull than u can imagine.
Also the rendering is 100% better. dont use hard shaddows they look unrealistic.
Then dont put so much stuff in your scene.. the raven 2 girls thousands of accessoires, millions of tombstones. then so big flowers which dont fit into the scene btw. there is nothing reflecting even teh skin is reflecting a lil bit. Use AO pls.. just use it. Everything in the room casts shaddows and reflecting like (AO and GI). Put the rabbit on a tree wide behidn the scene. Dont blure the background so much. looks like u have to hide unprecise work. Bevel stuff coz no edge is 100% sharp.

If u dont have C4D or dont have the "money" 400€ is not much.
But just producing this poser crap like on an assembly line is not art. Even if u moddeled it by your selfe than its great modeling.. so u only have to learn rendering and put on a well light setup. I cant imagina how making money with that, i never have seen in a commertial such grafics only in bad mmorpgs.

So maybe u should use my critic to improve, its nothing against u.

I appreciate each comment I get, even it is a critical one and I feel not offended.
We can argue about what is much money or what is not, I do not want to buy C4d because for me it is too expensieve and useless since I am doing content for Poser only and don't see a market (for me) for doing stuff for other software.
I use Ao in every scene, yet I agree the lightening in Poser in general is not stunning and I could have done better in this probably.

I know about the old argue between the Poser/Daz community and "real" 3d artist. There is nothing I can add to this what was not already said a thousands time.
I would wish that there were seperate galleries for both because the difference between us is too great to be simple overcome.
Don't worry about making money, there are plenty ways of doing it...

This is beautiful. It has just the right amount of dark sinister with just a touch of pain (physical and emotional with the neck and what I'm presuming is a tear on the vampire's cheek). Absolutely gorgeous, I love the colours, and the pose and the fantastic job you did on the arm bands and the torso (the jewels are a nice touch). I especially love the silver skirt.
Please don't hate me for saying this, but they sort of remind me of characters from a video game. I think it's mostly the hair but either way, well done. Very well done.
Also, I think maybe the one person saw the girl as transgendered because her skirt is lowered and she has a lack of definite hips (I'm a girl as well and I don't really have them either so I didn't think too much on it). I think that's more due to the pose though. With the hint of muscles and her shape, especially in comparison the vampire who's hips are very obvious, I can understand where she might get the idea, especially since she's tilted in a way that you can't tell she has them. But like I said, I don't have much in the way of hips (re: none at all really) so it's probably more that people are used to girls being portrayed with very broad hips, especially in detailed work with beautiful women. The idea of a beautiful woman seems to be an hourglass and the vampire has it, while the other woman doesn't, so it's a pretty obvious difference.
Ah, sorry for the very long babbling comment. I tend to do that. I really do this piece though.

I love video games, so no hate stirred up. But this was not inspired by a game.
I think using two different body shapes would make my pic more "believeable", and actually I like slim not-hourglass bodies as well.
It is funny because to my mind, the vampire has a more male touch then I-on (girl). Nice to see my figures through other eyes too.

I didn't think it was, especially since the characters are male in the game, heh.
Anyways, it does make it more believable which is why I love it so much. The girls actually seem like people.
The vampire does seem to have more male facial features but I-on's figure is more male. Either way, they look like girls, but I-on's figure is deceiving.

I usually wear jeans and girls t-shirts most of the time but I wear hats a lot and I don't really act feminine. So it's hilarious when I do actually do my hair and makeup and girl myself up. I have really long nice legs too, so basically it's a shock thing. People who've never seen me in nice clothes just go "guh". Lol. I love it.
Why would you get looks in a corset? I like the goth style but my problem is I love rainbows and bright colours, heh. I love the pants though, zippers and pockets upon pockets. I love pockets.

Just like my girlfriend...but she wears only black too, guess it is my bad influence and she has this androgyn aura herself too and is doing a lot of sport so her body is nicely toned.
I like colors too but not on my clothes. Wearing something black with a tiny bit of red or purple is the most colorful I like to do. Colors don't suit me.
Because I have big "equipment" and the corset just push it more (I useally wear something over my breasts but it is no use anyway, men still stare or worse)... and I am not too bad looking too (don't think I am arrogant, I just like myself).

Lol, you've converted your girlfriend into gothism. It's a good style though. I'm just very much a colour person. I have the little black dress and all, but almost everything I wear I need something colourful. If I'm wearing an outfit that's mostly dark colours I'll wear a pink scarf or a bright red or green sweater. Or really colourful earrings (my birthstone is opal so it's easy for me to have colourful jewelery).
I've actually wondered if I love rainbows and bright colours and opals because opals are my birthstone or for some strange reason I was meant to be born in October with my opals because I was going to love bright colours. Either way...
Ah, I see. A friend of mine is like that, really big in the chest area, lol. Which is actually kind of awesome because while she's not bi or gay she doesn't mind if I hug her and enjoy the squishiness. Lol. XD I'm so bad for that. But they are sooo comfy. I guess she almost smothered her boyfriend one night though, hee hee.
I suppose that would get irritating after a while but I don't usually get that many stares myself unless I dress up, which I don't unless it's a special occasion. I don't like to take the effort to get all dolled up just to catch someone's eye. If it's for yourself, like if you're having a bad day and you want to look pretty, or you just like wearing makeup, I've noticed lots of Goths wear makeup because they *want* to and I think that's awesome. But I'm not much of a makeup person myself and don't really understand why someone would wear it every single day because they feel they have to. I wear makeup when I want to, because *I* want to.
And I don't think you're arrogant. I know exactly what is sexy about my body and what isn't. It isn't being arrogant it's knowing yourself and being proud of your good points.

I don't mind of getting stares because my look is different, I just hate it to get sexual kind of stares and stupid, rude comments.
Well, I do not wear make up or my uncomfortable (but more beautiful cloth) every day. I have some more simpler goth clothes without too wide skirts and tops you could not breath into I wear when I want to have something comfy.
I like doing make up, to me it is art too and I took much time for doing it. But I am not always in the mood for it and my skin is very healthy because I am a vegetarian, so I do not need what people consider a "day-make up".
Honestly I do not understand why some people (even goths) would wear high heels and a corset in the supermarket. It is not practical but funny to look how they try to accomplish the simplest tasks there

Ah, I see. So it's more like "I didn't convert you, I just showed you more places to shop!". Lol.
I like garnets cause they're my mum's birthstone actually, hee hee.
Yeah, my sis complains about that. Honestly, if she didn't have the broad back and shoulders from my mum her back would be screwed from how heavy her's are. My friend is small but she also is proportioned a bit better to hold herself up but she still has problems from time to time.
I like making people do double-takes myself, but some guys do make some pretty inappropriate comments. It's nice to have a guy think you're attractive but if he's gonna call you something derogatory... No, just no.
I think make up is a skill and if you're goth, especially so. I've seen some beautiful designs on the faces of gothic girls (and guys). I just can't believe some of the things they can do. I'm not really a vegetarian but I have fairly healthy skin, sometimes I get breakouts, but everyone does and really, I've noticed that covering it up only makes it worse. >_< Plus I have some pretty prominent viens in my eyes, so my eyelids already look shaded... I have to watch under my eyes though cause they stay pretty dark because of the viens so people are always asking me if I'm tired. I told a friend once, "I am only tired if my eyes are glazed, other than that? I'm awake. Trust me". Lol.
*Snerk* That would be amusing. I've seen some goth clothes, they're awesome but not always practical. I mean, how in the heck would you bend over to get things on a bottom shelf? Heels are one thing, but I've worn a corset (not a real one, but one that still went pretty tight) and I could only just bend over to pick up a pencil. I can't imagine what a real one would do. I'd love to see it though. Heh.
