She grew quickly as a Soul, training every day to enter the Academy. After her schooling in the Academy, she graduated, but instead of going into a Division of the Gotei 13, she left to return home. Shigeru's family had picked a husband for her of a high-ranking Shinigami, who, although not necessarily a noble, had honor and a good reputation. At first, she struggled with getting to know her fiancee, but, having been raised to have this as her purpose, she endured.

Shigeru grew to love this man deeply. She had always had strong emotions, but she didn't know that it could feel this lovely to be with someone. They begun to plan a family, although not yet married, they would be soon. After their marriage, she found herself sad whenever he would leave to fulfill his Shinigami duties, and began to resent the Gotei 13 for their unrelenting justice. However, she found herself performing exceptionally well at housewife tasks, like cooking and weaving, despite being consistently alone, and thought maybe this was the perfect life for her.

Upon his return from a longer mission, Shigeru was frightened to realize he had forgotten about her. Not from time or distance, but it appeared an enemy Hollow had taken the memories of her from his mind. It was a fate worse than his death for her personally--opening herself up to someone only to be shut off from him forever. He was scared by her desperation for him and removed all association he had with her. She truly couldn't believe that after all that time spent learning what love was she could have been left behind so easily. Those around her began to shun her as the heart-broken wife, and she duly isolated herself. Her fear of rejection again turned her into a woman without personal passion but lots of focus on her Shinigami duties. She re-enrolled in the Academy to learn more, and graduated top of her class without distraction. Her heartbreak was transferred into her studies, and her now-tepid personality made her a shoo-in for the 2nd Division.

As she grew further, her heart gently opened to more and more experiences and people. She moved Divisions and mastered her bankai, putting her whole into becoming the best Shinigami she could be so that a Hollow could never get the better of another Soul again.
