Description
Slightly blurry pic of the first step in the bauerwehr sheath and the finished "new farmer messer" in it's scabbard with a by-knife. The scabbard is colored with vinegar and iron filings, then oiled heavily. Inside the leather is a wooden scabbard with both sheaths formed into it. After the scabbard is covered, the hole for the by-knife is carefully cut- then the area arounf the handle of the by-knife is moistened with water, and the knife is forced in. Once the leather dries, the by-knife is held in very firmly. The band near the top of the scabbard is for the belts, which will not fall off due to the bump~Related content

Love messers! The best of so many things in the sword world- and for peasants! Remember- it ain't a party 'till someone loses a hand!

If you want to do it sorta easier- get a Cold Steel messer, and re-work it. They have a good temper, not a horrid shape, but a horrid guard and pommel. Not too expensive to get going with, either. I've re-worked a bunch into single-hand models, and a couple into better-looking cutters in the hand and a half world.

I've had a hiatus due to busted grinder, and while that couldn't be working, I've tackled house renovations...
SO far, I've gotten the "kraka" (crow) blade ground, as well as the "weisblatt" (like "my messer"). The third is waiting, as I'm still not sure which type of blade I want to do. Maybe one of the sort of double-swooped tips. Dunno.

You use a hand-held?
I built an awesome "planisher"- a grinder. You can see a bit of it here- [link] . The total cost was about $500, but that's because I used the best of everything I could get. Except the motor, which is very solid- but possibly not the "best". Those go for like $700 alone... This one used 2'x72" belts, and I have grits- 36, 60, 120, 220, 400, 600, 1200, 2400 and 3 different polishing compounds (which I use for sharpening~).

I do pretty much all of my removal on the big blue... I also have the 4 1/2" grinder, a good one for some things I can't get to with the grinder, though. I can't imagine doing a whole blade with it, though!
Hmm. guess I'll have to try, now, won't I?
