Oh you're being far too innocent.
The wire was forced out of her rectum with a pair of pliers and a metallic weapon.
I was going to offer you a more accurate mental image by referring to real life torture devices, but lets keep Deviantart PG-13, hmm?

If you're talking about your "Conception of Space" - piece, then no, doesn't seem too bad
But at least you had the decency to sit down to do the deed.

Is the wood a specific type (pine, oak, etc)? I often wondered if it would have been easier to put the wood in the oven but was advised that this could be dangerous thanks to fire hazard or fear of warping.

A very good question, followed by a very valid point.
I do not think the wood has to be any specific type, but I'm guessing the majority is made out of pine (I buy mine from craft stores). I burn my sculptures in very low temperatures, from 100 to max 120, and I consider the fire hazard risk extremely low, given that I am supervizing the sculpture the whole time.
You are right about warping though, some of my bases have warped, and in some cases the growth rings can cause the wood to crack.
My suggestion is to get a piece with as little imperfections as possible,- the knots in the wood can bleed and are hard to hammer through, and growth rings can crack open in the oven.

Wood pre-soaking the boards minimize this in water? I'm thinking of how when I cook with bamboo skewers that I have to give them a couple hour soak. Not sure how it could be made to work without experimenting since a person needs to build on top of that soaked base.
Of course this idea opens avenues of potential warping from the wet wood... Perhaps I'll have to ponder this while bs'ing with one of my coworkers who works with wood.

I assume so, yes.
The damage done to my bases is usually minimal, I've never had any major accidents, and all the biggest dents and cracks have build up gradually.
By the time they're too screwed up to use anymore, they're usually so covered in paint that it's time for a change anyway.
But if you come up with something, I'd be happy to hear about it

The truth is, after getting all the clean shots of her out of the oven, I popped her back in and scorched her till crispy and golden brown!
At some point it popped into my head that she was screaming at me, but I was just unable to hear it. I did nothing. Sat, and watched her burn.

wow this is so informative :3
but i have a question o; did you have any sculptures explode cause of air bubbles? D:
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SgtMilenko In reply to iAlish [2011-09-21 11:10:45 +0000 UTC]
Nope, never!
Ive been super lucky, specially when working with air drying clay, Ive never had anything explode in over 8 years!
Im sure that day will come too, and because I understand the risks, I like to think that Im prepared for it.

iAlish In reply to SgtMilenko [2011-09-22 19:36:07 +0000 UTC]
Nope it was the one that smells like dirt and its really messy ;__;
Oh its probably cause i didnt kneed the clay enough :3
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SgtMilenko In reply to iAlish [2011-09-23 11:34:03 +0000 UTC]
That must be it.
Though... That sounds just like airdrying clay You still have to pop that clay in the oven though, but it has to be one of those special stone ones. Sound familiar?
If its the traditional clay, from my experience I can say it explodes much easier than polymer clay.

iAlish In reply to SgtMilenko [2011-09-23 13:40:35 +0000 UTC]
Yeah im pretty sure its that kind of clay :3

SgtMilenko In reply to iAlish [2011-09-23 14:09:08 +0000 UTC]
Then don't worry about, those things explode all the time (sometimes even taking out other projects inside the oven), it happens, often seemingly without a reason.
