Koffing are terrible, but since they have a low attack stat a pokemon might survive when they explode. Geodude and the likes are lethal for sure. Especially in newer games where they have sturdy.

Explode? I play Red, so updates don't have much on me yet, but I haven't seen a Koffing explode. As in self-destruct? I've only seen that in Voltorb and Electrode really (except when I occasionally reject it as a move offered to a couple other Pokemon).

Ohhhh, then you don't know the true horror yet. At least in gen 3 everything wants to explode. The geodude, voltorb and koffing lines and even baltoy. It's like walking in grenade Rain.

Ew. I started Emerald, but returned it to my sister because I got too busy with school. I don't play as much as I'd like... But I draw enough to compensate. X)
Honestly, I despise attacks that deplete the user's health. They're only good in last-resort I-have-5-hp-left-anyway-so-I'll-go-out-with-a-bang cases, and even then I'd rather restore health.

I feel you. I would also like to play the games more but at times like these I need to prioritize, and I'd mostly rather use my time drawing. It's often more fulfilling.
Yeah, those moves are kinda iffy to use tbh. On some Pokemon they work great, as a last resort, and can be handy in competitive. But really it's only a handful of Pokemon. Still, I'm okay with their existence, they create challenge and sound pretty logical too. Not for all but for Voltorb, for instance. Self-Destruct fits the concept very nicely.
