TUMBLR | INSTAGRAMI participated 's Pokemon Community Collaboration Gen II collab for a second time since they had some more openings!
I chose Lanturn this time because I have always liked it. It's a neat typing and such a cute design, too. The design in itself is very simple and the origin is as well.
In my research phase I realized that Lanturn doesn't have a dorsal fin - really, see for yourself - which was interesting. Anyway, I chose to base Lanturn on a whale - more specifically a porpoise - since it irks me how people tend to make it a creepy edgy anglerfish when it's not. Look at the design, do you see any of the creepiness of an anglerfish? No. The anglerfish features are there, they're just less prominent and definitely less creepy. I decided to add an underlaying level of creepiness in a more subtle way. During my sketching I figured I would make Lanturn's teeth and jaw more freaky - check out this sketch - so it can reveal that creepy predatory side if it wants to. (I decided not to do that expression for this image, it didn't feel fitting.)

If Lanturn was actually real and looked like that, people who went to the bottom of the ocean would probably be a bit freaked out to see that.
Looks scarier than a regular angler fish, anyway came out amazing!

Pretty sweet. Lanturn always struck me as more of a porpoise than an anglerfish anyway, though a proper anglerfish 'mon would be pretty sweet. Maybe some kind of water/dark or water/fairy...

Thanks! Anglerfish are cool for sure, would be nice if there was one that looked more like one. Or some other freaky deep sea creature. Although I don't know if those get too creepy for a kids' game.

I like your take on Lanturn very much. What I really like about your Pokémon designs is that you understand that realistic does not equals to creepy or weirdly detailed. Also, you do research and find ways to portray the Pokémon so it looks like the original design and also has features of real animals that actually matches the design, and not the other way. Some people use animals and build the Pokémon, instead of taking the Pokémon and see what parts could be based on which animals, like you do. Anyway, cool drawing

It's an anglerfish, but cutified.
Though anglerfish never looked creepy to me. Then again, you are talking to one of the few people who would 100% snuggle a moray eel if given the opportunity.

I'm still gonna argue that it's not a full anglerfish and that has nothing to do with the debatable creepiness factor. It has both anglerfish and dolphin (or sth alike) features. The smoother, simplified, more streamlined and long body and the way Lanturn is animated and the proportions are definitely more dolphin -like (despite the tail being oriented vertically). It's neither an anglerfish nor a dolphin. It's something inspired by both.

I mean, it's the primary source of inspiration, but it can also be interpreted in whichever way. For instance, against all logic, I like to think Typhlosion is some kind of sun bear with a flaming scruff.
Either way, sure, a porpoise-like Lanturn works, too.

My Lanturn is a hybrid. Most Pokemon are hybrids of different species which makes then special and very few actually work as strictly one type of animal.

It's not an angler fish. It's a whale adapted to see, lure and capture prey in the dark ocean depths. Another wonderful design from you! ^_^

Absolutely love it! I saw the porpoise in it right away and, yeah, because everything makes Lanturn into an anglerfish, it's quite a nice spin on an older Pokemon. : )
