Edit; Finished the speedpaint video! I didn't have footage from laying down the initial sketch but you'll see the painting process in this one!

My contribution for the gen 7 Pokemon community collab

As funny as it is I got yet another grass type! So far 5/7 of my generation collab entries have been grass types. :'D But I don't mind, grass types are cool and Morelull was the perfect excuse to draw YET ANOTHER FOREST SCENE. I love drawing forests. It's just so calming.

As you can see, I didn't choose the easy way out. Not only did I draw several of the Pokemon but I also wanted to make an interesting interpretation of the Pokemon. I really like Morelull, its concept is nice, design is lovely and all. I don't much care for Shiinotic, I see that as wasted potential. But Morelull instantly inspired me in many ways. It reminded me of fairy wings and it has this rather weird feel to it, just as I would like Fairy types to have. So, in order to embrace that weirdness I wanted to make Morelull a creature that would have mushrooms growing on its body, a bit like Paras. I didn't find a suitable critter to base it on instantly, but after looking for some small forest animals I decided to go with a mouse. I saw pictures of jerboa and other long-legged/tailed mice and I thought the legs + tail combo would fit the three pronged stalk nicely. Mice are also small, round and cute and imo they also have some fairy flair to them.

That's pretty much it! I streamed the process and apparently also recorded it so I might make a speedpaint video later.

I hope you like it!

I would have never had seen them as mice before! Morelull is one of my favorite 7 gen Pokemon! Plus, I love the shiny Morelull!

I hadn't seen this until now and I have to say I love your interpretation. I don't care much for Morelull but this way of seeing it makes it really interesting. Like it is a symbiotic organism, the mouse being the host and the mushroom the parasyte. And it does have a fairy feel, maybe because of those beautiful, shiny eyes *w* Such a cute jerbo/mouse you drew.

GORGEOUS and BRILLIANT *.*

I have never took attention at Morelull, since it seemed like a generic mushroom Pokemon, just reflecting the diversity among fungi.

Your idea is very clever and greatly executed!
I've seen datamined running animations from Sun/Moon and your realistic interpretation of Morelull simply fits perfectly with hopping Morelull!
Normally, it would bee weird to see such thin legs to support a creature, but Jerboa is perfect choice, because the tail is like the third thin leg, fan-tastic!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the idea. :> I'm quite fond of it personally. I haven't seen the running animation but it's good to hear that the running style fits.

I agree, making a Pokemon "realistic" by just making it gross is so unnecessary.

Heh, that's cute.
On the one hand these mice should be concerned that there's mushrooms growing out of them, on the other hand, they are, like, soooo high right now.

If you remove the shrooms the mice will have withdrawal symptoms worse than you've ever seen.

Oh gosh, what a clever idea. :'D The nubs on its top have become ears and more mushroom buds, and the three stalks have become legs and a tail, this is amazing.
They are absolutely beautiful and adorable, and the forest atmosphere feels enchanted.

Wyvern-1 [2017-01-23 04:45:10 +0000 UTC]

For all we know, Morelull are using some kind of hypnotic/hallucinogenic trickery to make us think they're just mushrooms. As usual, the details amaze me - especially love how the distant Morelull still present the more familiar silhouette.

I have to say, only you would think of incorporating a more creature form for a Pokemon that's decidedly...not. Really makes it more real. I think I like this interpretation far better than the original...^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to Wyvern-1 [2017-01-26 14:22:45 +0000 UTC]

Even more fitting then! And yeah, the silhouettes were done like that for that exact reason, nice that someone paid attention to it.

I quite like trying to think of some sort of living creature every time I do a Pokemon design, even if it's a chimera or not a specific animal at all. It creates twists and controversy which makes it interesting but also as you said makes it more real. The struggle is to not go for too easy/stupid things like all bugs or some kind of jellyfish things. 'D

Wyvern-1 In reply to ShadeofShinon [2017-01-26 18:11:54 +0000 UTC]

And the ones that aren't like any creature at all are the ones with the most interesting interpretations.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to Wyvern-1 [2017-01-26 18:20:20 +0000 UTC]

Eh, I'd say that depends. Sometimes they're too much "animal copy-pastes" or something that doesn't keep the key features so the Pokemon loses its character and becomes unrecognizable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wyvern-1 In reply to ShadeofShinon [2017-01-26 22:34:26 +0000 UTC]

It's a delicate balance, and you get it right, I think.

So what would your interpretation of Shiinotic look like? I really want to see that now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to BelphegorPrime [2017-01-23 09:17:29 +0000 UTC]

It would most likely be some chimeric creature. I would Base it on some rodent and an aye aye but I would also make the features exaggerated and weird. I would also make it seem like the mushroom and the Pokemon have become one, much like Parasect.

*watched trickywii's vid on what could of been Pokemon in sun and moon* *remembers 1 very nightmarish could've been alohan form* it could be worse if they went through with the paras line's alohan forms being infected by the morelull line, thus making the line top tier nightmare fuel

This is an incredible interpretation!
A mouse with mushrooms surprisingly fits nicely to represent morelull, they're small yet magical, a great way to represent a fairy type
It's also nice to see them stick out in contrast to the dark forest they're standing in

What would Shiinotic look like?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to candelediva [2017-01-22 23:40:22 +0000 UTC]

Not entirely sure, I didn't really think about that. I just thought that by basing Morelull on mice I would have pretty good opportunities to keep the theme with Shiinotic and make it a different possessed creature. Perhaps the possession has escalated so the creature and the shroom are now one. But that's about as far as I got in my thought process.

Kangaroo is a bit too large I think. But maybe some smaller relative like a wallaby though they have tails and Shiinotic doesn't. I think I might go with a lemur, like an aye-aye, because they're actually around the same size, and they have long fingers and creepy faces just like Shiinotic.
