Description
TUMBLR | INSTAGRAMAnother pick from my latest Pokeddex Challenge. This piece was done for the category "Favourite Starter" and I wanted to draw the whole family because I think Rowlet has the best evolution line as a whole (from Alolan starters). The Alola starters were a nice bunch all in all, but my heart was sold to the owls long before I even saw the evolutions. I really like the typing and the concept. Dartrix is definitely my favourite of the line because of how dapper it is. Decidueye was a bit underwhelming in terms of design and battle qualities (Primarina wins the place for the best last stage) but overall this family is just great.
Nothing very surprising in terms of interpretation! Just some barn owl and pueo owl here. The way I figured the “leaf” parts is the most surprising one, if you can say that. Instead of being leaves that just grow on the Pokemon’s bodies they’d be just feathers but with a different cellular structure so they can do photosynthesis. There’s this one bird that has iron in its wings, giving them either a bright red or alternatively a greenish colour, which is really cool. I think the Rowlet family could have either smaller plant growths or chlorophyll on the feathers, instead of them being separate plants. Whichever works better!
I hope you like it! And stay tuned for the whole challenge and possible other picks like this! Or if you are impatient go check them out on my Tumblr or Instagram! And just a heads up! All of the challenge's paintings will be for sale soon, this one included! More info later!

Ich leibe diesen realen Styl bei Pokemon richtig. Und dann noch eine meiner Lieblings Starter Evo.
Das als Staturen Trio für den Garten wäre mehr wie cool.
Mach weiter so.

I love them so much. Shinon, my heart...
*ded of happy*
I wish I could buy them so badly but I don't know if I'll have work then. But I'll cross my fingers, haha.

Were you describing Skarmory, or an actual bird? Scorpions do have metal in their tails, so it's not entirely far fetched...

I was describing a red-crested turaco, not a Pokemon. But since you asked about Skarmory, I would actually go for some bird of prey mixed with traits from other birds, such as the turaco or even the terror bird (the head shape and beak structure). The red in Skarmory's feathers could just as well be green (shiny version) so it makes perfect sense to me, and the rest could be unpigmented and still have iron in them.

Wow, I can't believe I've never heard of that bird before. And it really does fit as a possible real life inspiration for a realistic Skarmory. The red wings of some of them fit skarmory so well that I'm surprised that it wasn't actually based on them.

"one bird that has iron in its wings, giving them either a bright red or alternatively a greenish colour"
I see what you did there~ ;D

I actually meant a red-crested turaco there, but I would use that in a Skarmory design.

Ohh wow. I really wasn't sure if you were talking about a real bird because of how accurately that fit skarmory too. Learn something new everyday I guess. xD

That just means it makes a perfect motif for a realistic Skarmory design.

One of the best starter I ever had. Like, seriously, it was a killer.
Also, very well done! I love the realism in this one

I've taken to naming the Pokemon I caught in Sun after stars and constellations. If Rowlet was my pick, it'd be Sagittarius (because quill arrows). If it was Litten, it'd be Leo. If it was Popplio, it'd be Aquarius, but only if male; if it were female I'd break the naming scheme and call her Azura because of Fire Emblem Fates. It wouldn't be the first time I've broken my naming scheme, but that's for when I really get to writing my Nuzlockes. (I really should get going on these. DX)
The photosynthesis thing is a neat idea. It's like how some plants are carnivorous to supplement themselves by eating things, but it's the reverse - a living thing supplementing itself with sunlight...and considering the region, that's extremely appropriate. ^_^

Glad to hear you like the idea! I also thought it would be fitting for the region, and I also just really wanted to come up with something else than "leeching, parasitic things, ooo". It's so overdone.

Egh, yeah, creepy as that would be. I'm gonna have to try not having nightmares thinking about that.

I'm impressed on you made the Rowlet family so realistic because it feels real with acutal feathers .

When I first saw them, I was thinking of picking Rowlet - at the time Litten seemed really nice too, but I didn't like Popplio's design at all.
I don't remember why exactly, but I gave Popplio a chance, and now I'm quite attached to the whole line. Rowlet line is still cute though.
Incineroar is easily my least favorite of the bunch. I haven't much liked the final-stage fire starters in a few generations.

This looks so fantastic! The detail in the wings and leafs are amazing!
If this piece goes on sale I would love to purchase it! I've bought the Jellicent and Larvesta watercolors in the past. ^^

Thank you!
This one will be on sale! I was planning to put these paintings in an online store to make organizing things easier for me, but if you're interested in this one I can sell it to you directly. It's an A4 sized painting and the price I was thinking for it is 65€ (+shipping). It's from the highest end so I understand if it's too much, though.
