And here I'm gonna make some notes about this little comic here.

This particular piece of dialogue doesn’t differ much from the Japanese original one in terms of Hope’s answer, but what the localization changed radically was Lightning’s part. In the original, Light’s line goes more or less like this, nothing like her teasing tone here and actually leaning on a slight hint of jealousy:

"You sound… happier than usual. Is it because of Vanille?"

To which Hope quickly replies:

"That’s not true! Don’t tease me like that, Light!"

Though it’s indeed Lightning who took it more personal than it should in both versions, since, as I pointed out, last time Hope saw Vanille and Fang they were still in crystal stasis, so his comment isn’t exactly what we would call “happier than usual” or anything like that.

I’ve seen people claiming Hope’s reply in English at least was “unsure” or “hesitant”. I’ve listened to this clip quite a few times in my now six times I replayed LR and for this for the dialogue being exactly accurate, since my version is the Spanish one. I don’t see any hint of hesitance in Hope’s answer. He’s rather taken aback for the question, almost indignant. And I’m basing this last statement on, precisely, two more localizations, one based on the Japanese original and one in the English one.

First is the Chinese translation, based on the original. In which Hope’s answer, according to the font, gets rid of any trace of protest and simply says:

"No. That’s impossible, Light."

And second is the Spanish translation, based on the English version. Hope’s answer can be translated like this:

"How could you say something like that, Light?! Of course not!"

The fact that exclamation mark was added is relevant, like an indignant sign. The phrasing gives us a nice load of insight in what was, more or less, Hope’s kind of answer.

In any case, I did this mostly for fun, with no interest of attacking anyone. The explanation goes for better illustrate things about a general statement to which I don’t agree for the reasons I’ve exposed here. I actually based it in our Spanish translation, hence the “angry” reaction from Hope.
