Wait, I don't get it. How do you make sure the lines will stay black?

What i meant by that was that sometimes the shade of black used for the outlines is also the same shade used within the sprite, like for example Shadow's black fur. Before you start recoloring you just need to make sure the outlines are total black and will not be effected by you recoloring the rest of the sprite.
