I really like this... the blurred effect on the face (I'm not sure if that was the scanner that did it...) gives a very anarchist feel- to me anyway. Also, the colors blend together very nicely and give the picture a certain sense of 'harsh warmth', which seems like an oxymoron- and probably is. Great job!

this must be the new painting. Very nice! I like the idea, very different from the other sorts of "conformity" pieces you see on here. Sorry it took me forever to get to it; I'm sort of lying low on the DA until my computer gets back up.

Ok, I've seen the original and the scan completely messes it up which is too bad.
I love the eyes, I don't know how well it works on the screen, but in reality they follow you around everywhere. In comparison to the rest of the piece the eyes have an purposeful unreal quality to them that just adds to the statement of the picture that I'm seeing - "I may be beaten and seemingly dead, but I'm still me."
This is by far, for me, one of your best and most creative pieces created. Well done.

Thank you. It seems by people's reactions that the eyes are what seem to grab people. It would have been nice if I could have gotten a better scan, maybe I will update this one later when I get a better version.

I definately agree, he looks totally defiant, as if he could take a few more hits. I love the hint of red in the straight jacked from the background. the direction you ended up taking this in is awesome!

Something else I forgot to say was that I wanted to say thank's for spurring this with your contest. I didn't exactly go where I'd originally intended, but I like where I got anway.

One thing I forgot to say in my earlier comment was this: defiance is what's important in the face of conformity. You may fail, but never give in.

For somebody stripped of all rights, dignity and freedom, and forced to "conform," he sures has a defiant look in his eyes and posture. Maybe he got brain damage when he smacked his forehead against a bar code printer at the local K-Mart...

What I wanted to convey with the eyes was that you can bind someone, strip them of identity, and make them nothing more than a number but you can't easily destroy their spirit. On an individual level, maybe, but this is more of a metaphor.

And the message is fantasy bullshit clichΓ©. If their "spirit" or "soul" or "essence" or whatever you deem unique of an individual isn't eviscerated by oppression, then certainly they've not been oppressed enough. Unless you intended to picture the subject in captivity before being subjected to his soul-crushing fate, thus making sense of his rebellion, I don't like the message (nor that damn bar code

Let me get this straight: you and I disagree about the point, therefore there is no point? That makes no sense. I'm not going to try and convince to come around to the way I think because I don't care what you think and don't believe anyone should be told what to take away from a piece of art. Like it or dislike it, whatever, but don't expect me to agree with you or think you're clever. I've seen your work, and it's not exactly the cutting edge of brilliance either, so chill with the 'pot calling the kettle black' routine.
