Fingers fumbled, slipped, shook, searching, “Got it.” The twins didn’t bother glancing behind them as they ghosted through the wooden door, they knew It was coming.
“Faster ”
Alaina sobbed for breath as her brother dragged her down the dimly glowing passageway; Her bare feet leaving bloody footprints in their wake.
“Risis, I can’t... just leave me I can hold him off for a moment at least.”
Her brother’s face was stony; amber eyes, chips of frozen fire, glared at her, the collar on his neck gleaming a guttural blue in the artificial light, “I won’t let him turn you, too.” A roar echoed through the caverns, walls trembling with its force, a thousand Kfand Hounds were upon them.
“No,” Risis breathed to himself, hoisting Alaina into his arms he sprinted.
Right, left, right again, dead end, they would never make it, one more turn, rushing water in their ears; it would all end soon one way or another. Deep breath and over the cliff.
Smooth, sparkling water enveloped the twins. Welcomed them, coaxed them, into an oblivion so deep not even the Touch could reach them. It was over.
