Description
Here is a commission that I did for epicwang over on FA. This was supposed to be just a simple flat color, but erm well I got a little out of controlBut yes, somewhere amidst this overly detailed and heavily satured background is a blacktail doe version of a beautiful creature called Crow . Miss Crow likes ferns, mosses, and antlers. When attempting to design a believable scene for this lovely deer to fit in, I drove myself crazy. I need more background practice ok

okay, i REALLY cant critique this one; it is gorgeous. i wish my crappy backgrounds looked so good! it is a bit dark, and the deer fades into the background in certain areas, but... i think that's kinda the point of the piece. so not a flaw at all.
i've learned a lot from sheridan-j's tutorials; she has some on something called tutsplus or something...? tutsplus.com/authors/sheridan-… there's one about 'how to paint a tolkienesque landscape,' that may have some useful techniques for backgrounds. those are more distant backgrounds, though.
also, do you follow... katiehofgard? katiehofgard.deviantart.com/ (somebody told me once how to make those icon link thingies, but i forget... :deviantkatiehofgard: i probably spelled her name wrong...) anyway, she has a style similar to yours, and i think she sometimes does live painting streams, so you might pick up some stuff there. she makes some mad moss, too.

Thanks for the input, I will have to check out the tutorial you linked. I think the use of the clone tool would be a big help, I only use it sporadically, if ever, so maybe I should look into that. And yes, I follow Katie Hofgard! I used some of her pictures as references to make this piece. She is indeed the Queen of Moss.
P.S: to make an icon appear, just type :icon[name]: without the brackets. Type icon to make an icon (that's how I remember it).

i thought they told me it was 'dev' or 'deviant' or something that didn't make sense to me, because i thought it meant 'developer.' ; ) 'icon' makes so much more sense!
thanks a bunch! and i hope the tutorials help. there might be some (i think i had rocks and such) in my favorites under 'info' if you ever need a place to start looking.

Oh yes, well the 'dev' one is similar, but it just makes a link with the artist's name, instead of making a link with the icon. So if you type :dev[shadowwolf]: without the brackets you will get Shadowwolf

The background colors and the way the rocks and plants are drawn look good.
