Gates was a Regimental Commander who served in the 1030th Delforth Prison Legion.

The 1030th Legion was a legion that found itself mostly stationed on the Republican Planet Ispobeend. Much of this legion's forces found themselves protecting a Colossal Prison that was located in a Rocky land known as Delforth.

Dolforth Prison was a prison of colossal dimensions and size, which was prepared to accommodate thousands of prisoners. Prisoners who ended up in that prison were thugs, gangsters, mobsters, traitors, terrorists, rebels and even prisoners of war. Anyone and everyone who ended up in this prison could forever forget the words freedom, quiet, peace and calm.
Prisoners from this place could spend hours working in mines and quarries that existed close to the prison, while others were sent to the fertile lands that served as large areas of cultivation used by the republic. Prisoners there were treated like slaves and put to work for hours and hours at a time with five-minute breaks every two hours. They were also entitled to an hour lunch, and the workday ended around 9 pm. But not all prisoners ended up becoming slaves working for the Republic, many others were trained to become soldiers.
Gates was chosen by Senior Commander Chains to become the head of Delforth Prison. Gates is responsible for leading all units responsible for maintaining order and security at the prison. He was a person of order, who always demanded respect and good manners. He was also someone who liked to see things squeaky clean and shiny. Every week on Friday he has several prisoners cleaning up the all prison.
Gates was also feared by most prisoners, not that he was cruel to prisoners, he was simply a man who severely punished those who broke prison laws.

Gates was also responsible for selecting the prisoners who would become soldiers of the Republic. The possible candidates were usually people of good physical abilities, or people who were already used to risking their lives in battles or wars, many of them people with some military formation .

Gates, as director, was always on top of all prison affairs, in addition to that he knew the vast majority of prisoners very well, especially the most problematic ones.
Gates was also an excellent fighter and a great leader. His main abilities were in combat with Electrostaff. During his spare time, he used to select some skilled prisoners for his combat training. Gates always asked the inmates to use everything they had, to use the fury they felt for him in those sparring matches. They would in no way be punished for lightly or seriously injuring Commander Gates during practice. The problem is that Gates was too skilled, and all those who became his training partners, always trained in the infirmary with broken bones and other physical injuries.
