Description Count Duckula, 2008
3 1/2 in high
Polymer clay; Wooden base

Pretty much done. I'm not going to go too crazy in cleaning up all the surface smoosh - I'm going to go back and paint it with acrylics, which to get the saturated cartoon colors will go on fairly thick.

----------

Count Duckula. The image is a mix obviously - top half a framed portrait and the bottom from part from Duckula in the opening animation. I absolutely adore this show...

Anyway I started this as a rough warm up sketch before starting in on the pin up girl.

I'm always careful about commenting on WIPS so i thought I'd wait until the finished piece, wonderful work.

shalonpalmer In reply to Thebuild [2008-07-18 12:09:13 +0000 UTC]

But commenting on wips is the best part!! It allows a view that's not one's own tired view of the sculpt. A few of the comments that I've received here have caused me to look at things differently and make a few different and better choices. It's most of the reason that I put up wips!! So for next time, don't hold back!!!!

Thanks!

Yeah... I think the paint is going to really pull him together. Most of these smaller characters always seem pretty ehhh until they get painted.

For some reason I really like things in one color or just grey - but more so when they're larger and the details don't have to be really looked for... the color seems to help in those cases.

Thanks! I can't wait to see this guy once he's painted... I think it's what he needs to really come into his own.

OptimalProtocol [2008-07-16 22:43:42 +0000 UTC]

Never heard of the character but it came out pretty accurate from the reference I saw in your WiP piece. Whats the drying/firing process for this clay?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shalonpalmer In reply to OptimalProtocol [2008-07-16 23:11:29 +0000 UTC]

well... at this point the show is fairly old and dated. i recommend it though - there's a bunch of episodes up on youtube.

for this clay, it never dries out in the way traditional clay will. it's oven baked to a "ceramic-like" finish. it gets fairly hard but it's pretty brittle no matter what you do... as such it will last forever (being a plastic) but in a lot of cases it'll do so in pieces!! as for the oven cooking - it's 15 minutes per 1/4" at 275

Thanks! Yeah, I've noticed with a lot of the little character sculptures that they look alright in this stage and then they really get their life once they're painted!! Thanks for checking these out and following my work!
