Description
The PredatorI am no cute puss. I am a tough, aggressive and dominant feral cat. If you are a human or another cat, don’t even try to get close to me: I am bad tempered, I hiss and the food is all mine… the rest of the colony doesn’t stand a chance!
---
p.s. I placed this photo under the "wild" animals category because though cats are usually domesticated, this animal was born and grew up in the wild. This is in no way a domesticated animal and should not be placed into that category.
Thank you so much to ~sassy-alley-cat and ©suzi9mm for the DD!

I stare in amazement to this magnificancy. Those eyes, so wild and also haunting, pierce through your soul and nail you into the position you are in. The pose reminds me strongly of a cougar, a big cat ready to leap. This is such a wonderful photo in every way.
And you sure are right about the category. A gaze lasting a second can prove you this has nothing to do with domesticated animals. I was just wondering, is this fellow "yours"? Because it must be hard to have such a wild animal beside you. They had this one wild cat in the animal shelter I worked two weeks a couple of years ago and I was always a bit scared, or not scared but careful when I had to clean her and her kittens place. But magnificancy, nothing else to say.

No, she isn't mine. She part of a colony of wild, feral cats that live near my cottage.

Cool, the cropping is perfect, no chopped off ears and its almost pefectly third-ed.
What kind of lighting source did you use?

awesome shot! You got it right at the decisive moment, its perfect the gaze of the cat and its posture, it really fits the title well also, it looks as if the cat is stalking something, great moment.
i love so much the contrast of the cats fur to the darkness and blue of the background, very much helps pop the cat and help draw your attention there. The texture of the fur is also a great capture, it has this great contrast to it that really helps define the fur. DoF looks great, i like how the head is totally sharp but you can still see teh body in the background, however as the product of the shallowness. and the lighting, is just stunning, what time of day was this shot/what means did you use to light the photo (reflectors, flash, or just natual?)

What a wonderful comment! She was sitting (or crouching - I'm not exactly sure you could call that pose sitting) on a post that is part of our neighbours' deck and she was observing me watching whether she should pounce or if I was too powerful a match for her. Eventually I had to move and she was scared away. So, I suppose when you say that it looks as if she's stalking something, that something would be me...
As for the light source, this was taken in natural sunlight around 4:00 pm. I didn't use any reflectors, flash or anything else, just the availible light (and I didn't modify the lighting in photoshop either). I'm very happy with the way the lighting turned out and I suppose it's a combination of my good positioning and a bit of luck (the angle of the sun, where she was sitting...).
Thank you once again for the comment!

Great photo. My wife and I have domesticated several ferals believe it or not. And we actually have 4 that are not domesticated that live with us and our other house cats in doors. They learn from us and the others and take a deal of patience. But they're as well behaved as their cudly counterparts.

Our neighbours have also domesticated a few of the feral kittens. How old are the ones you've domesticated? It would seem to me that after a certain age it would be too late to fully domesticate them, but if that isn't the case I would love to hear your story. Thank you very much for the comment!

My wife is the true activist, though I definately do my part. Ours were of mixed ages. Its a conscious decision the cat has to make on its own on whether to accept anyone as an owner/equal.
Here's a solid example: Not long after my wife and I moved into our home, we encountered a small feral "tuxedo" male (I'll post a pic in my gallery if your interested). He would 'run for the hills' on site when we first saw him, hiss and growl all the time at us until the day came that I started barbequing. Being a man, I know the truths of getting to a mans heart through his stomach, so I started offering him small hand outs of my home cookin of pork ribs (I used to run smoke houses for a local meat operation for 8 years btw, lol, so this cat knew what good was!). After a few months of these treats, along with regular outdoor feeding, one day I sat on the grass in my back yard and he hopped in! He's been our absolute little baby boy ever since, in fact, he never wants to go outside (He goes the other direction, I think he remembers the hardships of living outside). He was about 4-5 years old then. Now he's 10 and toothless (like some people that just have bad genetics with bad teeth, Thomas is such a cat), but he is very happy and very spoiled rotten with his large family of other kitties.
They do have the ability to reason. Sometimes we have to do it for them and convince them later that it was the best thing. But in this case, Thomas had time on his side and could make the choice for himself, and he did.
As all the rest, we get them spayed/neutered, then their shots and all that jazz. There have been a few ferals we have done catch and releases on to our own, which involves trapping them in our own kennel, blood workup to make sure they are healthy, then get them fixed and all their shots. They then get a small notch removed from their ear to denote that they are feral and we keep them here for a few days to a week or more, depending on how they are feeling. When they are ready, we put them back out or in some cases they come around to living with us and we get them into homes with people who will give them the special attention they need.
Again, if you want, I'll post a pic of Thomas and maybe a few others if you want. I hope you enjoyed this little 'tale.'
Have fun! -and thanks for sharing your interest!

That's a wonderful story. I'm glad that there are people like you and your wife out there to take care of these cats. I would love to see a picture of Thomas!
Our friends at the cottage have domesticated two of the feral cats. I'm not sure how they got the first one, but the second one they told us that they had found him as a tiny kitten meowing on their deck. Apparently he had been abandonned by his mother (who is probably the cat in my picture) and was left be the others to die. They adopted him and he has been very happy living with them since.
From what I know our friends have been feeding these cats since last winter. They just leave some cat food outside their back door on the deck and about 25 cats (mainly young ones) come to eat it. Most of them are still very scared and just run away whenever you get too close, but there are two who are a bit calmer than the rest and one of them even lets you pick it up. Unfortunately, our friends are moving to another house soon and I don't know what will happen to the cats. I doubt that the new owners will be as willing to feed them and the cats will probably just go back to hunting for themselves.
Thank you once again for sharing your story!
All the best,
Christine

Shalora In reply to artgal80 [2005-09-02 00:03:42 +0000 UTC]
I know it's a she because our neighbours have been feeding these wild cats for a while and noticed that she is the mother of many of the kittens (the way she hisses at them and scares them away you would never guessed she's their mother...). They know she's their mother because they saw the kittens getting milk from her when they were really little.
