Description
I've actually had this idea in mind for quite a while now, and what better time to finally post it than the night before the release of the Invader Zim movie, Enter the Florpus? X3 Little known fact about me on this account here, I'm a huge fan of Invader Zim, and Enter the Florpus is pretty much a dream come true for me. Invader Zim, among Jhonen Vasquez' other works, was the absolute highlight of my teenhood, and helped sharpen my critical perception of the world around me. It also helps that its humor, writing, animation and especially its musical score by Kevin Manthei were all so ahead of its time, which makes its initial cancellation all the more egregious. But at least now, we may finally see the closure the show so desperately deserves. It's just that, the thing about Invader Zim is, I don't really consider it to be compatible with my own idea of littlespace. Invader Zim is a notoriously dark show, and during its original run on Nickelodeon, it statistically didn't fare as well with younger kids than it did with the preteen and teenage crowd. I personally think Invader Zim is far more crucial and effective in the impact it leaves when it's absorbed during adolescence, since there's a lot of scathingly critical satire and unapologetically sarcastic wit strewn within it, the likes of which would fly over the heads of little kids. Despite it being what I genuinely believe to be the greatest Nicktoon ever created, Invader Zim is definitely more of a thinking man's cartoon... that is, once you look beyond the surface of all the hyperactive screaming and yelling. XD So therefore, it's not exactly a show Shaney himself would be watching. ... That doesn't mean I can't put Shaney and Angie as characters into the type of dark comedy the show has set up so well. ;3 I mean, come on, that Gaz quote is just gift-wrapped for little Angie!Made in Sketchbook Pro 2011. Hope you all enjoy, constructive feedback is always welcome!

Oh, a lack of supplies doesn't measure an artist's worth. X3 Your sketches are a pretty good start, I must say. ^^ You just gotta keep practicing, and pick up new techniques whenever possible. Just make sure your evolution as an artist is organic, it has to feel natural. You'll be better than you thought you were in no time! ;3

Actually, I think that quote would fit with Gabriela better than Angie; since she's supposed to be a spooky child obsessed with pigs. XD
Now regarding Invader Zim. I think the opposite, truly children and teens were their target audience. Even though it had critical satire, it were quite superficial and not subtle; and many elements of its comedy were based on slapstick and surrealism as well as Ed, edd n eddy. I'm not saying that it's less clever because of that, but was easy to understand for the mind of kids.
By the way, I think I already told you that this Show seemed certainly disappointing. I really didn't expect it to be a slice of life.

Oh yeah, you do bring up a good point there. XD Though Gabriela technically isn't my character, so there's that to consider.
I actually beg to differ on kids being able to understand it that easily. What I said about the show appealing to teens and preteens more than younger kids wasn't an opinion, it's a fact supported by ratings statistics collected during the show's original run. Plus, more of the verbal satire was far more sophisticated for kids to understand than you'd think. A lot of them were staunchly anti-capitalist, such as when Ms. Bitters described having a class pet as being a good way to prepare children for "our nightmarish corporate system," or when Tak explained the obliviousness of humans overlooking her base being disguised as a giant weenie stand, saying "All they see is another corporate venture, not a plan for world conquest!", and Dib responded to that with, "Wait, is there really a difference?" Little kids wouldn't get that kind of satire right away.
And though I already explained how the show is supposed to be more of a dark comedy than anything, there are actually more episodes with some cool action in them than I remember! ;3 They're still primarily comedic, but the action is a nice little extra treat. This is how many action-oriented episodes I think you would like:
- Walk of Doom
- Nanozim
- Battle Dib
- Planet Jackers
- Battle of the Planets
- Dib's Wonderful Life of Doom
- Tak: The Hideous New Girl
- Hobo 13
- Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars
- The Frycook What Came From All That Space
- The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever (though the only action scene is near the end, it's still totally worth it)
And if all that isn't enough, just wait until you see how much action there is in the new Netflix movie, Enter the Florpus! ;D

Well, I will not discuss the facts supported by audience statistics. However, I still think that Invasor zim's satires weren't so sophisticated and the mind of an average child could understand them. Many of these were a bit cliche, like when Dib said "Wait, is there really a difference?" cause villains are commonly represented as entrepreneurs and businessmen, it isn't very complicated for a kids to imagine that corporations may want to conquer the world. Apart from that, as I had mentioned before, its satires were nothing subtle and very visible. For example when Ms Bitters said: "our nightmarish corporate system" the show is saying that its society is dystopian instead of just showing it; a little boy who doesn't usually pay attention to details could understand that more easily.
And by the way those are by far my favorite episodes, with the exception of 'The Frycook What Came From All That Space', I can't believe they remede the exact same plot about Zim working in a fast food restaurant twice.
And the truth is that I'm not very excited about the Netflix movie; they already have a bad background with adaptations; Such as its version of Death Note or its dubbing of Neon Genesis Evangelion

Villainizing capitalism really isn't as cliche as you're letting on, actually. The businessman-type villain may indeed be a cliche, but making commentary about the system of capitalism in general is highly uncommon in kids' media. The only other piece of kids' media I can think of that subtly exposes capitalism for its dark nature would have to be The Lego Movie, since Bricksburg shows it more in its environment, under the guise of a bright, bustling city. And Invader Zim DID show just how dystopian its society on Earth is, in basically every episode. The sky was a crimson red color, indicating that the sky had been tainted from ozone pollution, the police were heavily armed to a disturbing level, and let's not forget how the school was shown to be run in Voting of the Doomed. There's numerous other examples I could show you.
Career Day and The Frycook What Came From All That Space actually have entirely different plots, even if they reuse the same base concept. Career Day only shows Zim temporarily stepping into the field of fast food and plotting to climb to the top of the business in order to control the world, as indicated by how McMeaty's has served over 8 billion people, more than the entire population of the planet. The Frycook What Came From All That Space is a far more expansive episode that's rich with world-building and backstory, giving substance to when Tallest Purple inquired why Zim wasn't at Foodcourtia when he showed up uninvited for The Great Assigning in the pilot episode, The Nightmare Begins. The episode substantiates how Zim really isn't a real Invader, due to the Master Control Brain re-encoding him from Invader to Food Service Drone, as part of his sentence of eternal banishment to Foodcourtia, under the strict and sadistic supervision of Frylord Sizz-Lorr. In fact, it's because it's revealed that Zim is encoded as a Food Service Drone that perfectly explains why exactly the career machine in Career Day declared Zim to be a fast food worker, because the machine was able to read Zim's PAK encoding. We also see a glimpse of how the Irken Empire's intergalactic commerce works, as well as how certain alien species living under the Empire's rule are given more status as citizens, compared to the species being enslaved or destroyed under Operation Impending Doom II. It's not only a much more different episode than Career Day, but it's also a very important one in the overall continuity of the show.
Oh, you misunderstand entirely. X3 Enter the Florpus is not a Netflix production. It's only being distributed on Netflix. Nickelodeon made the last-minute decision to release two of their TV movies, Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling, and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, to Netflix streaming on the respective airdates of August 9 and August 16 this year. There's nothing to worry about in terms of Netflix meddling, especially since the decision was made far too soon for Netflix to interfere with the productions. XD

Don't underestimate the intelligence of children, Shane. I'm pretty sure that an average kid can understand the satires of Invader zim.
Master Control Brain? That voice-over had a name? Anyway, seeing it that way, that episodes served very well as world building. Explaining how he could quit his banishment. Also it seems that the colonies of the Irken Empire are like those of the Roman Empire; in which the conquered peoples could achieve citizenship status in exchange for recognizing themselves as part of that civilization, and that link-up with Career day is quite clever.
Well, the next time I go to the house of a friend who has Netflix I will watch that movie. It can't be bad if Netflix didn't have time to interfere with the productions.

You of all people should know I'm the last one to underestimate the intelligence of children. But the fact of the matter is, children learn better to what is accessible to them. The satire embedded in Invader Zim is simply too subtle for children to pick up on that easily. It's just a fact.
Trust me, it is definitely worth the watch. X3 You'll see why in due time. ;3
