Description So!

I just finished playing Fallout New Vegas. So I thought I would pay tribute to one of my favorite game series.

I'm not so sure about the new Fallouts. Don't get me wrong, they were fun to play, for the most part. But they didnt feel quite right to me. Bethesda just has a very different way of making RPGs. and from playing 3, it didn't seem they quite "got" the Fallout universe. It just lacked that fallout flair. it was a fun action RPG with familiar names and themes from the previous games, but little else. And from a visual standpoint I found a little too much emphasis on the cold-war, city-of-the-future retro, and not enough Mad Max, road warrior apocalyptica.

that being said, I am glad it introduced a whole new generation to the Fallout name. and gave the opportunity back to the original Black Isle crew to have another crack at the franchise. And I must say, New Vegas was muuuuch more Fallout, albeit using the same engine as 3. The characters, places, story, and hell, just the fact that it had anything to do with the other games was a plus. And in true Black Isle/Obsidian fashion, it was buggy as all hell. lol. But I enjoyed it anyway.

I guess there is just no more room in the market for those isometric, turn-based RPGs anymore (Van Buren looked SO sweet). Oh well, I try not to wear my nostalgia goggles too often. lol.

Anyhoo. For those who arn't too up on the Fallout Universe, or can't guess; These are my main characters from the 5
fallout games.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

From Left to Right/Back to Front:

Fallout Tactics: The reluctant Raider turned Brotherhood of Steel General. He was Grungy, unruly, and never really fit for a military life style but he was handy with a sniper rifle, and really knew how to pull together a battle harden crew and get the job done.

Fallout 1: The Vault Dweller was good at everything he tried, and he knew it. The only problem was, most of his experience was in computer simulation. After traveling into the wastes, he took quite a blow to his ego, but the struggle was for the better, and his talents were pivotal saving the wasteland, and beginning the changes that would remake the west.

Fallout New Vegas: The courier had little love for most people. She just liked to keep her head down, do her job, and be left well enough alone. Unfortunately, she was thrown into the mix of big events. and it so happens her sharp eyes, light feet, and deadly skills were a commodity for many interested parties.

Fallout 3: Tough, confident, and often overbearing. The Lone Wanderer helped turn the tide for the Brotherhood against the remnants of the Enclave with a quick wit, strong arm, and her handy plasma rifle.

Fallout 2: The sure footed, fast handed, charismatic descendant of the Vault Dweller; The Chosen one was instrumental in setting the west down the path to revival, and all but exterminating the nefarious and powerful Enclave

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

And there you have it. I've played the fallout games so many times, I have a sort of arching story that goes across all of the games. (I kinda tied the events of 3 in with New Vegas to make it fit) I always have fun personifying my RPG characters, and adding bits of personality and back story. Especially when it came to Fallout.

thanks

Holy hot damn that Chosen One is giving me a case of the vapors! I do so hope you do some single bio pics in the future
Also, and I right in thinking that your Vault Dweller's looks are based on the Vault Boy? God damn that is the buffest looking nerd I've ever seen.
Kudos to you, man- absolutely great work!

Very nice to see someone else breathe life into the "blank slate" type characters of every other RPG, especially Fallout. And I cannot help but swoon over both your Lone Wanderer; what a bombshell!

Also I like how the Chosen One's vault suit is a faded version of his ancestor, the Vault Dweller, who I might add looks quite a lot like the cartoon mascot of the Pip-Boy!

This is great! I've got a long history with the Fallout series (been playing 'em since the demo of the first one) these peeps are so full of personality that with a quick glace I can imagine how each of the characters would have acted in their own sagas. I like your Courier and Chosen the most overall but you get super bonus points for even having a Tactics character : D Β

I do have one minor critique though, This works pretty well as a montage but the Vault Dweller seems oddly giant (mostly if you compare the head size between him and the others who are more or less equal) shrinking him down a touch or adjusting his placement in the image might even it out a bit, but it's just a quibble.

i don't know if you already know but there's a new game in development called wasteland 2. the sequel to the 1980's game that inspired fallout, some early screen shots showed its essentially going to be like the first two games but in 3d. check it out if you're interested, thought i Β pass it on.

That's not what a water chip looks like, in Fallout's universe civilization never reached miniaturization technology, a Vault water chip is easily the size of a plate.

I really don't understand your complaint about Fallout 3 at all. The entire game is all about the post apocalyptic setting, it's ironic that you would say that New Vegas and the old Fallout games did that better. Fallout 1 and 2 = Mostly empty desert map screen that really has no purpose, some locations with some burnt out houses. New Vegas = barely seems like the post apocalypse what with it being yet another empty desert. While Fallout 3 you can visit the ruined city of Washington DC, constantly find crumbling and destroyed buildings, and makeshift scrap metal housing in the wastes. Hell, they captured the Wasteland feel far better than the originals did, and this is coming from someone who has played 1, 2, 3, and New Vegas. Sorry to say, but it does seem like you've got your nostalgia goggles on for this one.

Nice picture though.

well, I'll give you the nostalgia goggles. but i didn't say the old fallout games did the post apocalypse thing better. I said 3 didn't feel like it quite hit the fallout thing. That's cool that you like their style better, and I have never said I don't like 3. far from. but even playing 1 and 2 today, I like them better. different strokes bro

"The Fallout thing" is "The apocalypse thing". The newer games I find to be better in pretty much every aspect. I wouldn't really want it to be like the old ones, a 40 hour or so game where scavenging and exploring is near non-existent? How does that feel like the apocalypse at all?

well i would call the F3 Anclave "Remnants" i mean Eden is the president i would consider them more so "dimineshed".... but without the lone wanderer the brotherhood would be plasma goo. My F3 Charecter Joined the regualtors on his journey and my courier...welll ..........i twisted it up.....a bit 1 playthrough imagined what he would be like if he was The Chosen one from F2 wandering the wastes as a courir trying to find some form of purpose .....he would be in his 60's thats long living for the wasteland XD and another playthrough my courier was a former enclave member

agree with most of what you say, but i think fallout 3 was right to have more about the cold war and retro future due to its location, being in the capital of a country at war the place was bathed in far more wartime paranoia , but your right that i lost that mad max element

Honestly, after playing Fallout 2, the old ones are pretty good. But I much prefer the newer ones. The old ones are just too empty, and they are really short (though I'll give them a break since they were made in the 90's).

i would say i agree, i like the story of them, and although i haven't had the chance to play them all the way through i made sure to research the plot properly , and they were great, but i just can't see the older game engines competing with the newer 3d open world engines

plus i liked the differences between the east and west coast, you'd expect the capital wasteland to be more than a little different than the mojave wasteland due to the difference in population and number of large buildings

I'm one of those people that makes one character for an RPG, gets attached to them, and sticks to them I just recently started playing through Fallout 3 again, and I'm essentially doing everything the way the character would do them, not the way I know things will turn out perfectly. I've already played through the storyline three times just by saying what I knew would get me somewhere. Time to start saying things that I know would give me a better story. At least in my head

Please keep in mind that F3 was on the East Coast, while most of the other games were on the West coast so the change from F2 -> F3 was very jarring. (Even if you ignore the change in game style) The culture of the Coasts (And Mojave) are vaslty different from one another that's why the games went from "Mad Max" to "Letting go of the past-patriotic" to "The Postman". Though I will admit the only true constant kept between games was the 'Universe' of Fallout.

AnonymousUnversed [2012-03-20 01:43:33 +0000 UTC]

You should have drawn the Prisoner in there. Even if Van Buren never saw the light of day. -.- I'd go so far as to say to include one of the Initiates... I thought Cain was interesting, at the least.

And why exactly did you feel the Beth Soft didn't "get" the Fallout series? I thought they did an excellent job and paid the original games a lot of justice. It was apparent to me that they had taken a lot of time to get to know the universe they were dealing with.

Also, I think it's been said by either Obsidian or Beth Soft that you probably won't be seeing places near the Core Region very much after New Vegas. Which has both its pros and cons, to be sure.

Also it was quite a shame that Van Buren was axed. The had so much of that done. Then BOOM. Everyone at Black Isle laid off.

Also, from the design document, I don't think Brotherhood of Steel 2 looked half bad. And they seemed to have that near finished.

Sorry about the awesome triple comment.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shardanic In reply to AnonymousUnversed [2012-04-14 05:56:04 +0000 UTC]

awesome triple comments are always encouraged. lol.

ya, I didnt include the prisoner because...well...I never played the game. I always have a lot of fun fleshing out a personality for my fallout characters, but I didnt have anything to work with for Van Buren. And i agree its a shame. I miss my old isometric rpgs, and Van Buren was looking to be just the right mix of new and old. *sigh*, oh well, what can you do?

anyhoo, dont get me wrong, I think Beth did a decent job of continuing the series while updating it to appeal to a wider, and more modern audience. It's just the subtle nuances that didn't translate. And while I would have preferred for them to have emphasized the "mad max" post apocalypse feel more so than the retro 50's theme, that just comes down to personal taste. All in all, having played the old school fallouts (and 2 about a billion times) it all just feels like Beth trying to imitate a fallout game. reverently, sure, but still imitate

but who can please a diehard fallout fan? no one, that's who. lol
