Description
Mah hat is keeping the main part of the mask on. XDNote: No, you're not seeing things... For those out there that are people who look at small details, yes I am missing a pupil and iris. Car crash a while back. Teenage drunk driver had too many beers and hit my truck head on. Broke my wind shield, didn't do much damage to the front of it thankfully but the physical damage done to me was irreversible...,-_- So people... friends don't let friends drive drunk. Remember that please.

I've got to make a fursuit by halloween, for two costume contests, with a really low budget. Any advice?

Go to some fabric stores that sell upholstery foam by the yard and/or scraps by the pound. Buy yourself a little. Get a chunk large enough to make a muzzle and some 1 inch sheets to flesh out the face and head. Use new ladies tights as your base. I have a tutorial that'll walk you though the first few steps. You'll need about 1/4 yard of fur... wait, are we talking about the entire thing? well, so far, this is just for the head... Anyways, you'll need some sculpey or super sculpey for the teeth and nose. You can also use Crayola Model Magic for the gums and tongue.
Body, you'll need about 4-6 yards of fur. If you're low budget, I highly recommend doing a partial suit. That only requires about 3/4 yard of fake fur.
Look around for some substitutes that can be used for a cheaper price. You can always upgrade your suit to better quality stuff and a full suit.

I'll be selling this as soon as I get it done.
XD Thanks. I've had to wear a colored contact so I didn't get any weird looks but I leave it out on Halloween. I get the best reactions.

This is a method I'm thinking on offering in the future. It takes a little longer than resin but less steps.

sorry to hear about your accident, but even with your loss of some vision, your work is extremely detailed and clean cut and professional looking. i really think you have found your niche in making costumes, and i know who ever else commissions you in the future is going to be happy with the end results; especially since you are only going to get better at making them :-p you are an amazingly talented person and you go far out of your way to please your customer =]

I'm terribly sorry about your auto accident- though it does provide for a good example of being responsible while drinking. *hugs*
I just had a question about celluclay, what is it exactly? Seeing it sculpted like that makes me very curious to try it. It looks a lot easier to work with.

Celluclay is like the Super Sculpey of paper mache`. Wonderful stuff. Dries REALLY hard and extremely light.

FoxMaxwell In reply to Sharpe19 [2009-06-09 21:43:17 +0000 UTC]
How did you sculpt this? Like you would a sculpture in art class? Molding with your hands? How are you gonna make the jaw move? How will you apply the fur? Are you going to use foam for like, eyebrow indention or detail? I'm so curious because this is incredibly creative and brilliant to think of! Sorry for the question overload

Sharpe19 In reply to FoxMaxwell [2009-06-09 23:08:24 +0000 UTC]
O.k...
I made a clay face sculpt, let it dry, then sculpted celluclay over it and stuck in front of the fan over night. I carefully broke out the clay from inside the celluclay sculpt and Tah-da! Instant celluclay face sculpt.
Yes, the jaw will move via my stretchy base and elastic.
I'll hand sew the fur on and hot glue parts down so it doesn't move around.
Most likely not since fur gives a mask plenty of shape within itself.
I honestly don't mind questions at all.^^

Thank you so much for answering my questions- greatly appreciated! I just have one more, what clay did you use to shape the mask? Just sculpty? I'm so ridiculously excited to try this out myself (and if a success, crediting you of course) and want to know the full process so I don't eff it up too badly XD Thank you again!

Nope. I was getting back from a marching band tournament, and it was about 11 p.m.. I saw the car pull onto the road, speed up, and swerve right into me. I didn't even have a chance to react. The police said the kid must have swerved to go towards my light since drunk drivers constantly follow other drivers...
That was my last truck. I'm driving a Jeep truck now that has a bit more maneuverability...XD

Its amazing that your (mostly) ok... People can be so irresponsible, although for those who dont understand the consequences, i know why theyd drink-and-drive. I went to a party and all my mates were drinkin adn blowing off a little steam. I really needed a drink (it'd been a pretty hard week) but had to drive home... it was really hard not to have one. I kept thinking "its only 5min home... what could one drink do?" but i knew it wasnt worth the risk. I dont know what id do if i ever hurt someone like that, just for one moment of releif...
hehe Good idea with the jeep! I'm gunna get my truck licence soon (medium/heavy combination so i can drive my dads cattle truck) but i epic-fail at driving a car, so i'm gunna be really BAD! :S
