Description
Sort of a simple guide to see if your pelt is one that can be mounted or not properly. I'm seeing so many pelts that people have attempted to mount up that really should not have. Practice is one thing, but practicing with the proper materials/pelts will help far more.If you want to try your hand at taxidermy, start slow and gather up the right things. Squirrel kits are fairly cheap, as are craft faces (coyote/fox/etc.) that you can try out hydrating, repairing rips, turning ears/lips/etc (only if they are present!) and so on. Use oil clay on a cheap form to practice sculpting eyelids and more and watch as many mounting videos as you can. Work your way up till you are ready rather than jumping right in and ruining a pelt that may, or may not, be mountable.
Proper forms will give you the right shape as well as all of the key marks you need to have things line up right and using the right adhesives and clays will ensure a long lasting mount you can be proud of.
A note on the extras at the bottom:
With leather, take a little and test it first. luke warm salt water is what I use. Just take a little from an edge and let it sit in the water for 15-25 min max, checking it every 5 minutes after the 10 minute mark. it should stretch a little and not tear immediately. if it tears easily, don't hydrate the rest or else you will risk dry rot and things falling apart.

Very nice guide!
quick question though.. I've turned the ears on my fox pelt that is going to be a soft mount. Can I take out the full lot of cartalage from the ear. I'm not using the bondo method

I leave the cartilage attached to the front for a little extra shape. If it's turned well, it won't effect it.

HA! My first pelt has a technically mountable face... if not for the huge holes in it!

this isn't exactly related to the tutorial, but i thought i'd ask anyway if that's alright?
i really want to start doing taxidermy, but i really don't know how to start. i don't have any taxidermist friends or anything to shadow. how would you recommend someone start taxidermy, and do you have any resources for beginners (things like laws to be aware of, basic tutorials on mounting, etc. etc.)? it's kind of a complicated thing, i know, but i just don't have very many people to talk to about it.

Hey!
You can start with these ....
General online Tutorial: www.taxidermy101.com/
online Institute Classes: www.americaninstituteoftaxider…
McKenzie Taxidermy Videos: www.mckenziesp.com/Taxidermy-V…
VanDykes Taxidermy Videos: www.vandykestaxidermy.com/Taxi…
Google Taxidermy tutorials and you might also want to check out the major Taxidermy supply companies (McKenzie and VanDykes) - they may have additional Taxidermy How To's and would have the necessary supplies you might need. I started to try this long ago, but knew i wouldn't have the proper amount of time or work space needed. It's not a casual 'do it when I get around to it' sort of craft to learn. You need to commit some time and energy to be able to do it correctly. Good Luck!

Hm, I don't know the usual way... How I started was getting scrap pelts and faces and practiced hydrating, sewing leather, shaping, etc. also got an old form and practiced sculpting eyelids and muscles. After that I looked into tutorials and bought skulls to see the under structure as well as read books and watched videos.
